Gaming makes a computer hot by design. The CPU and GPU consume much more power while rendering graphics, running game logic, and maintaining high frame rates. Loud fans, hot exhaust air, and brief temperature spikes do not automatically mean the system is overheating.

A real thermal problem is more likely when high temperatures occur with sustained clock-speed reductions, FPS drops, stutter, crashes, shutdowns, abnormal fan behavior, or temperatures at the exact component’s documented limit. Start by measuring CPU and GPU temperatures, clocks, power, and fan speeds during the game—not just at the Windows desktop.

After reducing gaming heat, Outbyte PC Repair can clean temporary files and adjust settings that lessen CPU, memory, and disk load.

Is your computer actually overheating?

There is no universal rule that says 80°C is safe or 90°C is dangerous. The relevant limit depends on the exact CPU or GPU, laptop or desktop design, firmware, power settings, room temperature, and workload.

Intel explains that modern processors can experience high temperatures and short spikes under demanding workloads while dynamically adjusting power and frequency. ASUS likewise notes that many current CPUs may operate near hardware-defined limits, often around 100–105°C depending on the processor and settings. These figures are not universal gaming targets; check your specific model’s documentation:

Usually normal

  • Fans become louder when a game starts.
  • Exhaust air becomes hot.
  • Temperature rises quickly during a boost period.
  • Temperature falls after closing the game.
  • Performance remains stable without crashes, artifacts, or sustained throttling.

Signs of a thermal problem

  • FPS declines or stutter begins after several minutes of play.
  • Clock speeds or power draw fall as temperature rises.
  • The CPU or GPU repeatedly reaches its documented thermal limit.
  • The system crashes, restarts, displays a black screen, or shuts down.
  • A fan stops, pulses abnormally, rattles, or grinds.
  • One component is much hotter than its normal behavior despite clean airflow.

Thermal throttling is a protective response: the processor or GPU reduces frequency, voltage, or power to control heat. Intel documents CPU clock reduction at the thermal limit, while Windows describes thermal management as using active cooling such as fans and passive cooling such as reduced performance. See Intel’s throttling explanation and Microsoft’s Windows thermal-management documentation.

Stop immediately for emergency signs

Stop using the computer if you notice a burning smell, smoke, electrical crackling, visible liquid, a melted connector, or a swollen battery. Disconnect power if it is safe to do so, and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician. Do not continue stress-testing a system that repeatedly shuts down.

How to check CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming

Desktop readings are not enough. Reproduce the problem using the same game, resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate setting, and power mode that normally trigger it.

  1. Install a reputable monitoring utility from its official source. HWiNFO is a detailed option for Windows and provides sensor readings, logging, and reports. Its personal, non-commercial versions are free; licensing differs for commercial use.
  2. Open the sensor view and record idle temperatures for a baseline.
  3. Start the game or a repeatable in-game benchmark.
  4. Play for 15–30 minutes, or long enough for the symptoms to appear.
  5. Record CPU temperature, GPU temperature, GPU hotspot/junction temperature if available, utilization, clocks, package or board power, fan RPM, and any thermal- or power-limit indicators.
  6. Compare the result with the exact CPU or GPU model’s specifications and the computer manufacturer’s documentation.

HWiNFO can log sensor data for later inspection. An in-game overlay using MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server can show temperature, utilization, clocks, and FPS, but download those programs only from a trusted official or manufacturer-linked source. HWiNFO documents integration through its add-ons page. The HWiNFO download page showed version 8.50 as the stable Windows release when checked on August 18, 2026.

How to interpret the readings

Pattern Likely direction
High CPU temperature, cooler GPU CPU cooling, CPU power limits, or a CPU-heavy game workload
High GPU temperature, normal CPU GPU airflow, GPU fan behavior, graphics settings, or GPU power
Both are high Restricted airflow, high room temperature, aggressive performance mode, or a cooling system at its limit
Temperature rises while clocks fall and FPS drops Thermal throttling or another power/temperature limit

A brief spike is less informative than sustained temperature combined with falling clocks or degraded performance.

Safe fixes to try first

  1. Stabilize the system. Save work and shut down if it is crashing or restarting.
  2. Clear the airflow path. Put a laptop on a hard, flat surface. Remove fabric, dust filters, objects, or furniture blocking intake and exhaust vents.
  3. Close unnecessary software. Temporarily disable recording tools, overlays, browsers, RGB utilities, and other background applications while diagnosing.
  4. Cap the frame rate. Set an in-game or driver FPS limit at or below the monitor’s refresh rate. An uncapped game can make the GPU render frames the display cannot show, increasing power and heat.
  5. Reduce expensive settings. Try ray tracing, resolution or render scale, shadows, volumetric effects, and view distance first. For CPU-heavy games, reduce crowd density, simulation detail, or physics.
  6. Use a balanced profile. A laptop’s Turbo or Extreme Performance mode may intentionally raise power, fan speed, noise, and temperature. Test Balanced or an equivalent mode and compare performance.
  7. Return changes to stock. Undo overclocking, undervolting, custom fan curves, motherboard enhancement features, and power-limit changes.
  8. Compare games. If only one title causes the issue, test a frame cap and lower settings before treating the computer as faulty.

An FPS cap can substantially reduce unnecessary GPU work, but it is not guaranteed to solve a blocked heatsink, failed fan, poor heatsink contact, or undersized cooler.

Why games make computers hot

Games can load both major heat sources at once:

  • The GPU works harder at higher resolution, with ray tracing, high-quality shadows, volumetric effects, and uncapped frame rates.
  • The CPU handles simulation, AI, physics, networking, game logic, crowds, and high-refresh-rate frame delivery.
  • Demanding titles can load CPU and GPU simultaneously, raising total system power and case temperature.

Other common causes include dust or hair, blocked vents, failed or obstructed fans, poor case airflow, high room temperature, an overly aggressive boost or power profile, background processes, malware or cryptocurrency miners, a new BIOS or driver, a game patch, and a cooling system that is too small for the selected power level.

Intel specifically lists dust, fan failure, inadequate chassis airflow, damaged heatsink retention, degraded thermal interface material, and liquid-cooling pump or leak problems among overheating causes. NVIDIA also identifies poor case airflow and dust-covered graphics-card fans as causes of high GPU temperatures:

Clean dust and improve airflow

Desktop computers

  1. Shut down, switch off the power supply, unplug the system, and wait before opening the case.
  2. Photograph cable and fan connections before disconnecting anything.
  3. Clean intake filters, vents, case fans, CPU heatsink fins, and GPU heatsink fins.
  4. Hold fan blades still while using compressed air so they do not spin excessively.
  5. Avoid putting a household vacuum directly against sensitive components if it could create static discharge or pull loose parts.
  6. After reassembly, confirm that every fan is connected and spins.

Front, bottom, or side fans commonly provide intake, while rear and top fans commonly exhaust, although the correct arrangement depends on the case. Keep the computer away from walls, carpet, enclosed cabinets, and direct sunlight. Additional fans will not compensate for an incorrectly mounted CPU cooler or a failed GPU fan.

Laptops

Clean visible intake and exhaust vents, but consult the manufacturer’s service instructions before removing the bottom cover. Opening a laptop may affect warranty or service eligibility depending on the manufacturer and country. Do not use bedding, blankets, or soft furniture underneath it. A stand that raises the rear can improve airflow to some designs, but it cannot repair a failed fan or clogged internal fin stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid aggressively forcing compressed air through laptop vents without guidance: it can drive dust deeper or overspin a fan. Intel notes that its desktop-oriented procedures may not apply to OEM laptops; use the system manufacturer’s procedure where available.

Check fans, heatsinks, and liquid cooling

With the system powered on, check whether every desktop case fan and the CPU cooler fan starts and responds to load. Look for rattling, grinding, intermittent stopping, implausible RPM readings, or a disconnected cable. A GPU’s zero-RPM mode can intentionally stop its fans at idle; that is not automatically a defect.

For liquid cooling, check that the pump is detected, connected to the correct header, and operating at the expected speed. A pump failure, leak, or loss of fluid requires service or replacement rather than lower game settings. The CPU cooler must also be firmly mounted with full contact. A loose mounting mechanism can produce very high temperatures even when fans work correctly.

Advanced fixes: fan curves, power limits, and undervolting

Fan curves

A more aggressive curve can reduce temperature but increases noise, dust accumulation, fan wear, and—on portable systems—power consumption. Avoid running multiple fan-control utilities at once because they may fight over the same settings.

Power limits

Reducing CPU or GPU power can reduce heat and may prevent repeated throttling, but sustained performance can fall. A small, predictable performance reduction is often preferable to oscillating clocks and stutter. Record the original values and change one setting at a time.

Undervolting

Undervolting can reduce power, heat, and fan noise, but support varies by processor, motherboard, BIOS, laptop, and vendor utility. Some systems lock it. An unstable setting can cause crashes, application errors, corrupted work, or a failed boot—and a setting stable in one game may fail elsewhere.

If a change causes instability, revert the last change. Load BIOS defaults if the system still boots; if it does not, follow the motherboard’s documented CMOS-reset procedure. Do not disable thermal protection or apply universal BIOS values copied from another computer.

Thermal paste and heatsink contact

Repasting is a later-stage repair, not the first response to a high number. Consider it when a cooler was recently removed or incorrectly mounted, temperatures suddenly worsened after years of use, or the system remains unusually hot despite clean vents and working fans.

Laptops may use ordinary paste, thermal pads, phase-change material, or liquid metal. Substituting the wrong material or changing pad thickness can reduce heatsink contact and damage components. Liquid metal is electrically conductive and can destroy hardware if it spills. Desktop coolers also require correct mounting pressure and appropriate thermal-interface application.

For a laptop under warranty, or any system involving liquid metal, heat pipes, battery swelling, or unclear service procedures, use the manufacturer or a qualified repair technician. Intel’s guidance includes checking heatsink retention and thermal-interface material, as well as pump and leak problems where applicable.

Laptop overheating while gaming

Laptops commonly operate closer to their thermal limits than desktops because their heatsinks are smaller and CPU and GPU heat may share heat pipes. Gaming while charging, a hot room, an underside intake blocked by a desk mat, or a Turbo performance profile can raise temperatures further.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A high temperature during a demanding game is not by itself proof of damage. Look for persistent throttling, substantial FPS loss, crashes, shutdowns, abnormal idle temperatures, or behavior that is markedly different from the same model’s previous behavior. Test a hard surface, a balanced power mode, an FPS cap, and lower ray tracing or render resolution before buying a cooling pad. A stand or pad helps only when access to the intake is the bottleneck.

Desktop overheating while gaming

Inspect fan orientation, dust filters, front-panel restriction, cable placement, cooler mounting, CPU cooler capacity, and GPU heat recirculation. A GPU can heat the entire case if exhaust airflow is poor. Motherboard enhancement settings can also raise CPU power automatically, even without a manual overclock.

For an all-in-one liquid cooler, verify pump operation and mounting. For air cooling, confirm the heatsink is secure and suitable for the CPU’s sustained power. A power-supply fault, loose GPU power cable, or unstable overclock can resemble overheating when the symptom is a sudden restart or black screen.

Drivers, BIOS, and background software

Do not treat updates as a universal thermal cure. Update graphics drivers through the GPU or computer manufacturer when a driver issue is suspected. Update BIOS/UEFI and chipset drivers only using the manufacturer’s instructions, preferably when release notes address stability, fan, or power behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the problem began immediately after an update, compare behavior using the manufacturer’s supported rollback or reinstall process. Check Windows startup applications and background tasks. If CPU or GPU utilization remains high when no game is running, investigate recording software, overlays, browser tabs, unwanted utilities, and malware. Remove conflicting monitoring, fan-control, overclocking, or RGB tools one at a time.

Use this troubleshooting decision tree

  • Hot but stable: Check the exact component limit and throttling indicators. Try an FPS cap or balanced mode and confirm that temperature falls after closing the game.
  • Hot with FPS drops or stutter: Log clocks and power alongside temperature. Identify whether the CPU or GPU is limiting performance, then reduce that workload or repair its cooling.
  • Sudden shutdowns or restarts: Stop stress testing, restore stock settings, check cooling and power connections, and seek service if the problem continues.
  • Only one game is affected: Test a cap, lower settings, another demanding game, and any alternate graphics API offered by the title. Consider a game patch or driver interaction.
  • All games and idle use are hot: Check idle utilization, fan operation, background processes, power mode, and heatsink condition. Escalate if temperatures remain abnormal at low load.

When to contact the manufacturer or a repair technician

Escalate when cleaning, stock settings, airflow checks, and basic software tests do not resolve persistent throttling. Service is especially appropriate for a failed fan, liquid-cooling pump, heat-pipe problem, battery swelling, electrical damage, repeated shutdowns, or a laptop that is still covered by warranty.

Keep records of the temperatures, clocks, power readings, game settings, and changes you tested. Manufacturer support pages may provide model-specific diagnostics and warranty rules; for example, MSI provides support, service information, and warranty information. Warranty and opening-device rules vary by product and region.

What not to do

  • Do not use a generic temperature chart for every Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA component.
  • Do not disable thermal protection.
  • Do not replace laptop thermal material without identifying what the manufacturer used.
  • Do not undervolt or overclock without a recovery plan.
  • Do not assume a GPU fan stopped at idle is broken.
  • Do not use a vacuum directly on components if it risks static discharge.
  • Do not install a BIOS update solely because temperatures seem high; check its purpose and instructions.
  • Do not buy more fans or a cooling pad before identifying the airflow bottleneck.
  • Do not repeatedly stress-test a computer that shuts down, smells burnt, or shows electrical damage.
