Contra: Operation Galuga is a brisk, recognizable run-and-gun revival whose new modes and local co-op make it easier to revisit than a bare retro re-release. Reviews are mixed overall: the familiar action and options appeal, but limited novelty and questions about longevity keep it from being an across-the-board recommendation. It is most compelling for Contra fans and couch co-op groups; platform-specific performance cannot be ranked from the available review evidence.
What reviewers think of Contra: Operation Galuga
Metacritic’s all-platform page showed a 70 Metascore from 26 critic reviews and a 6.8 user score from 51 ratings when accessed in 2026; both were labeled “Mixed or Average.” These are snapshots, not permanent scores, and they combine platforms rather than describing how the game performs on any one system. Metacritic’s review page includes praise for fast, familiar action, accessibility options, reduced frustration compared with some earlier entries, and four-player couch co-op. Other reviews fault the limited novelty, art direction, short-lived content, or lack of online co-op. Those are different reviewers’ judgments, not a unanimous consensus.
On Steam, the store page showed 87% positive from 813 all-time user reviews, while its last-30-days measure showed 60% positive from 10 reviews at the same 2026 access point. The recent sample is small, and both figures can change. Steam’s store page is a separate, PC-specific user snapshot, not a direct substitute for critic reviews. GameSpot listed the game at 6 (“Fair”), a single outlet’s score rather than an aggregate. GameSpot’s listing
How the action and new mechanics hold up
Konami and developer WayForward frame the game as a reimagining of the classic 1980s arcade and NES Contra, not a straight port. Bill Rizer and Lance Bean return to fight the Red Falcon group across eight stages. The familiar run, jump, and shoot loop is joined by weapons such as Spread Shot, Crush Bombs, and Laser Beam, plus character abilities including double-jumps, slides, and grappling. An Overload mechanic adds offensive and defensive effects. Konami’s official game page describes these features.

That mix explains the split in reception: the core action remains recognizable and quick, while the additions do not necessarily transform the formula for players seeking a radically new Contra. Difficulty options and accessibility features can make the experience less punishing, but the available review evidence does not establish that every player or platform gets the same experience.
Modes, co-op, and replay value
| Mode | Players | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Story | 1–2 | Story campaign across the game’s eight stages. |
| Arcade | Up to 4 | Arcade-style play with up to four local players. |
| Challenge | Not stated | 30 missions; the official description does not state a player count. |
Konami’s official materials confirm local co-op for two players in Story Mode and up to four in Arcade Mode. The supplied official descriptions establish local play, not online co-op; do not buy it expecting online multiplayer on that basis. The three modes provide more than a single campaign route, but reviewers also raised concerns about limited longevity, so the mode count alone does not guarantee substantial replay value.

Does it run well on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, or PC?
The game launched digitally on March 12, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The available review and product information does not provide reliable, current comparative performance testing across those platforms. That means there is no supported basis here to recommend one version for frame rate, resolution, loading, or stability. Check current platform-specific reviews and store details if performance is a deciding factor.
Should you play Contra: Operation Galuga?
It is a reasonable pick if you want fast side-scrolling action, a modernized take on classic Contra, or local couch co-op—especially with a group that will use Arcade Mode. It is a less certain choice if you need extensive long-term content, substantial novelty, or online co-op. The 2024 launch announcement listed a U.S. price of $39.99, but that is historical launch pricing, not a current price recommendation. Konami’s launch announcement named Limited Run Games as the physical preorder channel; it does not establish present stock or an Amazon listing, so verify the retailer, edition, and current price before purchasing.
