Control Xbox Achievement Pop-Ups and Who Can See Your Activity

To review achievement pop-ups on an Xbox console, press the Xbox button and go to Settings > Preferences > Notifications. To limit who can see achievements and other account activity, use the separate privacy controls at Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize, or sign in to Xbox’s online privacy settings and select Submit after making changes. These settings serve different purposes: changing notifications is not the same as changing what account information is shared.

A quiet screen, a less-visible profile, and private account activity are three different goals. The right menu depends on which result you want, and preview features may not appear on every console or account. Use the labels shown on your own device, especially after a console update.

How do I turn off Xbox achievement notifications?

Start at the console’s notification preferences and review the options displayed there. Xbox’s official guidance gives the route as Settings > Preferences > Notifications; it does not establish the exact current label or location of an achievement-specific switch.

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
  2. Open Settings, then go to Preferences > Notifications.
  3. Review the notification options shown on your console and adjust the achievement-alert option if it appears.
  4. Return to a game and test the result with a new achievement when practical. A test confirms whether the change affected on-screen alerts on that device; it does not test account privacy.

Menu wording and available options can differ by device or software version, so use the labels on your own console rather than looking for a deeper path that may not match. Xbox has documented an Xbox Notifications category for another type of notification, but that does not confirm that achievement alerts use the same category or label today.

Xbox summarized the console route in its official 2024 settings guidance: “You can also update your notification preferences on Xbox consoles from Settings > Preferences > Notifications.” If you do not see an achievement-specific choice, the available documentation does not verify another current console route for it. Do not assume that muting a general notification category deletes an achievement, changes Gamerscore, or prevents other people from seeing your activity.

What the console setting actually changes

This menu is about the alerts rendered on the console. It can make the familiar achievement pop-up less distracting while you play, but it is not an account-data control. A person who wants fewer interruptions should begin here. A person who wants to limit sharing should continue to the privacy menu, even if notifications are already silent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a family member uses a different Xbox, profile, or device, that person may have separate notification preferences. Check the active profile before concluding that a setting failed. Preview software, account type, and regional or software changes can also affect which options are visible.

Who can see my Xbox achievements and gaming activity?

Use Xbox privacy controls—not notification preferences—to review sharing. Microsoft says achievements, game statistics, and presence may be visible to other players and linked services, and that privacy settings can limit sharing.

  1. On the console, open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize.
  2. Review the privacy choices available for your account and adjust the relevant sharing settings.
  3. Alternatively, sign in to Xbox’s online Privacy & online safety settings, make changes, and select Submit.
  4. Sign out and back in, or check the profile from another account, if you need to confirm that a change has propagated. The exact display can vary, so verify the result using the choices your account presents.

The specific audience-selector wording is not established in the available official material, so follow the choices presented for your account rather than relying on a particular label. Microsoft also sets a firm limit: “Your gamertag and scores that show on game leaderboards are considered public and cannot be hidden.” Privacy controls therefore do not make every Xbox identity or score private.

What may be covered by privacy controls?

Microsoft’s privacy statement identifies achievements, game statistics, and presence as information that can be visible to other players and linked services, subject to the account’s privacy choices. That means the privacy menu is the place to consider when your concern is another player viewing gaming activity, not when your concern is an animation appearing on your own screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important boundary between limiting sharing and removing a public identifier. A privacy change cannot turn a gamertag into a secret identity, and it cannot hide scores displayed on game leaderboards. A setting that reduces what friends or other players can view should therefore not be described as making the entire account anonymous.

Online versus console management

The signed-in web option is useful when you are away from the console, when a controller is unavailable, or when you manage several profiles. Sign in to Xbox’s online privacy and safety settings, make the changes offered for that account, and choose Submit. The web page may use different wording or layout from the console. The account—not the screen where you edited it—is what matters.

For a child or family-managed profile, an adult organizer may need to manage the account through family settings. Do not assume that an adult profile’s choices, or the same audience terms, will appear for a child account.

Which setting should I change: notifications, privacy, or profile display?

Choose the control based on the result you want. A notification preference concerns alerts on your device; account privacy concerns sharing; a profile-display feature can affect what appears on a profile without stopping activity reporting.

Goal Control Where Effect What it does not establish
Quiet achievement pop-ups Notification preferences Console: Settings > Preferences > Notifications Adjusts the alerts shown on that console. Does not itself change account privacy, Gamerscore, or another person’s view.
Limit sharing of account activity Xbox privacy controls Console account privacy menu or signed-in online privacy settings Controls available sharing choices for achievements, game statistics, presence, and related activity. Does not hide gamertags or leaderboard scores, which Microsoft identifies as public.
Remove a game from a profile achievement list, where available Insider preview feature Profile presentation Can change how a game is presented on a profile. Does not delete Gamerscore or stop activity reporting across Xbox.
Change where notifications appear on a Windows PC Game Bar notification placement Settings widget > More settings > General Changes the on-screen location of Xbox notifications. The documented option concerns placement, not turning off achievement alerts or changing privacy.

The comparison is especially important for the hide-game feature. Removing a title from a visible list is a profile-cleanup action. It is not equivalent to turning off sharing, and it is not an eraser for achievements already earned.

Can I hide a game from my achievement history?

Xbox announced a hide-game option for selected Insiders in April 2026, but it is a profile-presentation feature—not a way to erase an achievement record or conceal activity from Xbox.

In its April 8, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement, Xbox said selected Xbox Insiders could try refreshed achievement notification visuals and a forthcoming option to hide games. The announcement does not establish a general release date, so do not assume the feature is available on every account. If you cannot find it, that may simply mean your account is not in the preview group or the feature has not reached your software version.

Xbox said hidden games still count toward total Gamerscore and their activity remains reported across Xbox. Hiding a game from a profile list should therefore not be treated as a substitute for account privacy settings. It also does not promise that a title will disappear from every service, comparison, leaderboard, or linked experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A separate September 29, 2026 announcement described a Gaming profile tab where friends can view achievements, along with Mythic Achievements, as an Insider early look. That announcement does not confirm broad availability. If a friend has the tab or feature and you do not, the difference may reflect preview eligibility rather than a missing privacy setting.

Profile cleanup and privacy are separate decisions

Consider the intended audience. If you only want a tidier profile, a hide-game option may help when it is offered. If you want to limit what other people or linked services receive, use the account privacy controls. If you only want to stop an interruption during play, use notification preferences. Applying one of these actions does not automatically perform the other two.

What can I change on Windows, mobile, and a child account?

Windows PC

On PC, Xbox documents a way to change where Xbox notifications appear on-screen: open the Settings widget > More settings > General in Xbox Game Bar. Xbox’s April 30, 2026 announcement describes notification placement; it does not say this setting disables achievement alerts or changes account sharing preferences.

Use Game Bar when the problem is location—for example, a notification covering a corner of a game. Do not treat its placement control as a privacy switch. For who can see activity, use the signed-in Xbox privacy settings instead. The Game Bar option also does not establish that a console’s achievement-specific control has the same label or behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mobile

Xbox reported social and privacy-notification changes across console, Windows, mobile, and xbox.com/play in 2024. That announcement does not establish a mobile-specific achievement-alert switch or a verified sequence of steps for it. For account sharing, use the documented Xbox privacy controls instead of assuming a phone notification setting changes what others can see.

Mobile app layouts can change independently of console menus. If an app offers a notification preference, read whether it concerns push alerts on the phone, messages, or account privacy. Do not infer a mobile achievement-alert path from a console instruction unless the app explicitly presents it.

Family-managed accounts

Microsoft says child privacy settings start at the most restrictive level and describes family management for those accounts. If you are managing a child’s profile, review its family-managed privacy settings rather than assuming the available choices will match an adult account.

Check which Microsoft account is signed in before changing anything. An organizer changing their own profile will not necessarily change a child’s profile. Restrictions can also affect multiplayer, communications, and visibility choices beyond achievements. The safest approach is to open the family-management controls for the specific child account and use the options shown there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check if the setting is missing?

First confirm which outcome you are trying to change: a pop-up, who can see account activity, or what appears on a profile. Then check the corresponding settings area; an option missing from one area is not evidence that another setting has changed.

  • For console alerts: return to Settings > Preferences > Notifications and inspect the options actually shown. The current achievement-specific switch label is not verified in the official material cited here.
  • For activity sharing: use the account privacy path or sign in to the online privacy settings. Do not expect these controls to hide a public gamertag or leaderboard score.
  • For a hide-game option: check whether the feature is available to your account; the April 2026 announcement covered selected Insiders, not a confirmed universal release.
  • For a child account: check the family-managed settings for that profile, since child privacy starts at the most restrictive level.
  • For Windows notification placement: use the Game Bar path; it concerns where notifications appear, not account privacy.
  • For an unexpected profile difference: verify the signed-in gamertag, console software, and whether the account participates in an Xbox Insider preview.

If the guide does not open, verify that the controller is working and that its Xbox button responds before troubleshooting the menu path. If the controller is not usable, console navigation will require a working compatible input method; buying a replacement is not necessary when the existing controller works. If you do need one, a replacement Xbox Wireless Controller is a practical hardware option to check for compatibility, but no controller purchase enhances privacy or unlocks these settings.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not look for privacy controls under Notifications. They are separate settings areas.
  • Do not describe a muted pop-up as deleted achievement data.
  • Do not promise that a hidden game removes Gamerscore or stops Xbox from reporting activity.
  • Do not assume a preview feature is available because another player can see it.
  • Do not claim that a public gamertag or leaderboard score can be hidden through the privacy menu.
  • Do not apply an adult-account procedure to a child profile without checking family management.

Why are Xbox menus or features different from the instructions?

Xbox changes menus over time, and preview features can appear for selected Xbox Insiders before a wider release. The April 8, 2026 achievement announcement and the September 29, 2026 Gaming-profile announcement are examples of dated preview information, not guarantees for every account. The April 30, 2026 Game Bar announcement documents a PC placement choice, not a universal console notification switch.

When the screen differs, prioritize the documented top-level entry point and the purpose of the setting. For alerts, begin with Notifications. For sharing, begin with Xbox privacy. For profile presentation, look for the feature only if your account offers it. Avoid changing an unrelated setting merely because its name sounds similar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off an achievement pop-up delete the achievement?

No. Notification preferences control the alert shown on the device. They do not establish deletion of an earned achievement, removal of Gamerscore, or a change to who can view account activity.

How do I stop achievement pop-ups on Xbox?

Press the Xbox button, open Settings, and go to Preferences > Notifications. Review the options displayed on your console and adjust an achievement-alert option if one is present. The current exact label is not confirmed, so do not rely on a deeper path that may differ.

Who can see my Xbox achievements?

Microsoft says achievements, game statistics, and presence may be visible to other players and linked services, subject to privacy choices. Review Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize, or use the signed-in online privacy page. Gamertags and leaderboard scores remain public.

Can I hide a game from my achievement history?

Xbox announced a hide-game option for selected Insiders on April 8, 2026. Availability is not confirmed for every account. Where offered, it changes profile presentation; hidden games still count toward total Gamerscore and activity remains reported across Xbox.

Does hiding a game remove its Gamerscore?

No. Xbox expressly said hidden games still contribute to total Gamerscore. Hiding a title is not achievement deletion and is not a complete privacy control.

Why does a friend have a Gaming tab or Mythic Achievements when I do not?

Xbox described those features as an Insider early look in its September 29, 2026 announcement. That announcement does not establish that every account has access or specify when availability might expand.

Can I hide my gamertag or leaderboard score?

No. Microsoft’s September 2026 privacy statement says gamertags and scores shown on game leaderboards are public and cannot be hidden through these controls.

Does Xbox Game Bar turn off achievement alerts?

The documented Windows path—Settings widget > More settings > General—changes where Xbox notifications appear on-screen. It does not establish a control for disabling achievement alerts or changing account privacy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a mobile setting for achievement notifications?

Xbox reported broader social and privacy-notification changes across mobile and other surfaces in 2024, but a verified mobile achievement-alert switch and step sequence are not established. Use the documented console or signed-in privacy entry points as appropriate.

Can a child account use the same privacy choices as an adult account?

Not necessarily. Microsoft says child privacy starts at the most restrictive level. Review the family-managed settings for the specific child profile rather than assuming an adult account’s menu or choices will appear.

Does the Xbox 100% completed filter mean my achievements are hidden?

No. Xbox’s mention of a 100% completed filter describes an interface category, not a privacy status, completion statistic about users, or a setting that hides achievement activity.

Can the same Xbox privacy menu look different on another console?

Menu wording and preview availability can vary, and Microsoft’s privacy statement describes the data-sharing rules rather than documenting every current on-screen label. Follow the options on the device and account you are managing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Settings > Preferences > Notifications to manage achievement pop-ups on an Xbox console. Use Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize, or the signed-in web privacy page, to manage sharing. A hidden game, when available to Insiders, only changes profile presentation: it does not erase achievements, remove Gamerscore, or stop Xbox activity reporting. Gamertags and leaderboard scores remain public.
