Choose Coolify if you want an application platform that handles common web-deployment plumbing—domains, HTTPS, health checks, logs, environment variables, storage, and lifecycle actions. Choose Komodo if you want a Docker and server operations console built around containers, Compose stacks, image builds, Swarm resources, agents, procedures, and granular access controls. Neither product includes a VPS: you provide the servers, networking, DNS, secrets, updates, monitoring, and recovery plan.

The practical decision is therefore about abstraction. Coolify groups work as applications, databases, and services; Komodo exposes servers and Docker resources more directly. The sections below explain the architectural difference, deployment workflows, multi-server behavior, security obligations, and the situations in which each choice is more appropriate.

What are you really choosing between?

Coolify and Komodo both give you a web interface for operating workloads on infrastructure you control, but they present that infrastructure at different levels.

Coolify is organized around projects and environments containing applications, databases, and services. Its documented inputs include Git repositories, Dockerfiles, Docker Compose files, and prebuilt container images. The platform then adds the pieces commonly needed to publish a web service: domain assignment, HTTPS, health checks, logs, environment variables, persistent storage, and container lifecycle controls.

Komodo is organized around operational objects: servers, containers, Stacks, Builds, Swarms, Procedures, Actions, and Resource Syncs. Its documentation covers container deployment, Compose stacks, image builds, Docker Swarm, scheduled procedures, shared variables and secrets, audit trails, role-based permissions, API access, and browser terminals.

That distinction matters more than the number of buttons in either dashboard. If your main question is “How do I get this application online and keep its web plumbing in one place?”, Coolify is the closer fit. If your question is “How do I operate several Docker hosts, Compose projects, builds, and repeatable server procedures?”, Komodo is the closer fit.

Do Coolify or Komodo provide the VPS?

No. Both are self-hosted management software. You still rent or own the VPS or servers that run the management components, containers, databases, and persistent data.

For the Coolify path, Antihost VPS offers Linux VPS plans with a one-click Coolify image, full root access, and NVMe storage in the USA East, Netherlands, and Ukraine.

With Coolify, you install the Coolify instance and connect workload servers to it. The instance stores configuration and issues actions, while Docker containers and their data run on the connected workload server. HTTP requests are sent to the reverse proxy on that workload server, not through the Coolify dashboard.

With Komodo, you run a Core component and install a Periphery agent on every server you manage. The Core provides the web application and coordination; Periphery carries out operations on each host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In either design, self-hosting leaves several responsibilities with you:

  • Provisioning suitable Linux servers and sizing CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity.
  • Applying operating-system and Docker updates.
  • Restricting SSH or agent access with firewalls, keys, and least-privilege accounts.
  • Configuring DNS records and obtaining or renewing TLS certificates.
  • Protecting environment variables, API keys, database credentials, and other secrets.
  • Monitoring hosts, containers, disks, certificates, and application health.
  • Backing up persistent data and verifying that restoration works.
  • Documenting what to do if the management instance, a workload host, or a database fails.

A dashboard can reduce routine work, but it does not remove the underlying VPS administration or the consequences of an insecure configuration.

How do Coolify and Komodo connect to servers?

Coolify uses SSH from the management instance

Coolify connects to workload servers over SSH and coordinates Docker workloads there. The connection model is familiar to administrators who already manage Linux hosts with SSH keys and firewall rules. A single Coolify instance can coordinate resources on one or more connected servers.

The separation between the dashboard and workload traffic is important operationally. Your application’s HTTP traffic terminates at the reverse proxy on the workload server. The dashboard is used to configure and operate the resource; it is not a required hop for every request to the application.

Komodo uses Core plus Periphery

Komodo’s architecture has two named parts. Core is the central web application and coordinator. Periphery is an agent installed on each managed server, and every server that Komodo manages requires that agent.

This design gives Komodo a direct operational channel for host and Docker actions. The documented feature set includes shell access, container and stack operations, builds, monitoring and alerts, scheduled procedures, API access, audit trails, and role-based permissions.

The difference is not simply “SSH versus an agent.” It changes how you inventory hosts, deploy updates, restrict access, and troubleshoot a failed connection. Coolify’s setup centers on SSH connectivity from the instance; Komodo’s setup includes maintaining a Periphery installation on each server as well as the Core service.

What is the side-by-side difference between Coolify and Komodo?

Decision axis Coolify Komodo
Primary abstraction Applications, databases, and services grouped in projects and environments. Servers, containers, Stacks, Builds, Swarms, Procedures, Actions, and Resource Sync objects.
Server connection SSH connections from Coolify to workload servers. Core communicates with a Periphery agent on each managed server.
Deployment inputs Git repository, Dockerfile, Docker Compose file, or prebuilt image. Containers, Compose files from the UI, host, or Git, Git-backed builds, and Swarm stacks.
Multi-server use One instance can coordinate resources on one or more connected servers. Designed to connect and operate multiple servers; the documentation states there is no limit on connected servers.
Operations emphasis Domains, HTTPS, health checks, logs, storage, environment variables, and application lifecycle actions. Host monitoring and alerts, shell access, container and stack operations, builds, Swarm, procedures, audit trails, and granular permissions.
Backup documentation The operator backs up and restores the Coolify instance and protects workload data separately. Documentation covers Core database backup and restore, including restoration from previous snapshots; workload backup policy remains the operator’s responsibility.
Best fit A guided application platform for common web deployments. Direct Docker and server operations, Compose and Swarm management, and programmable procedures.

The table describes documented capabilities, not a performance ranking. No independent benchmark or uptime comparison establishes that one product is faster or more reliable than the other.

Is Coolify easier for deploying applications?

For a conventional web application, Coolify generally presents the shorter path because the workflow is application-first and includes web-delivery features in the same resource model. That is an interpretation of its documented workflow, not a measured usability score.

Typical Coolify deployment path

  1. Install the Coolify instance. Place it on a server you administer and protect its administrative access.
  2. Connect a workload server. Provide the SSH access Coolify needs and confirm that Docker and the host meet the current installation requirements.
  3. Create a project and environment. Use these groupings to keep related applications, databases, and services organized.
  4. Select the deployment source. Point the resource at a Git repository, supply a Dockerfile or Compose file, or choose a prebuilt image.
  5. Set environment variables and storage. Enter configuration and secrets through the resource settings, and map persistent storage for databases or stateful services.
  6. Configure the public endpoint. Attach the domain, set the required DNS records, and enable HTTPS through the available proxy and certificate workflow.
  7. Define health and lifecycle behavior. Configure health checks and use the dashboard for deployment, restart, log, and other lifecycle actions.
  8. Verify recovery. Confirm that the application starts correctly after a restart and that its persistent data is included in your backup plan.

This workflow is especially useful when several services share a domain, certificate, environment, and deployment routine. It also keeps application operators from having to assemble separate tools for reverse-proxy configuration, certificate handling, and routine container actions.

Where Coolify’s abstraction can be limiting

The same application-focused model can be less comfortable when your work is primarily host orchestration. If you need to reason about arbitrary Docker commands, Swarm objects, host-level procedures, or a fleet-wide automation graph, you may find yourself working around an application-oriented interface rather than using the resource model directly.

When is Komodo the better choice?

Komodo is the stronger match when your unit of work is a server or Docker resource rather than a published application. Its Core and Periphery design, resource types, procedures, and permissions are aimed at operators who want explicit control over how hosts and workloads are run.

Compose stacks from multiple sources

A Komodo Stack can use a Compose file entered in the UI, stored on the host, or pulled from a Git repository. Git-backed stacks can use webhooks for redeployments. A stack can target a regular server or a Docker Swarm, which lets the same management approach cover both single-host and clustered deployments.

Build and deployment automation

Komodo documents image builds, scheduled procedures, Actions, shared variables and secrets, and Resource Sync objects. These pieces are useful when deployment is a sequence of repeatable operations—build an image, update a stack, run a migration, verify a service, and record the result—rather than a single application release button.

Operations and governance

Host monitoring and alerts, browser terminals, audit trails, API access, and role-based permissions are first-class parts of Komodo’s documented scope. That combination suits teams that need to delegate some tasks, retain an account of changes, or integrate server operations into their own automation.

What Komodo makes you manage

Komodo’s flexibility comes with additional components and concepts. You must deploy and update Periphery on every managed server, secure the Core-to-agent relationship, decide which roles can perform which actions, and define procedures that are safe to run repeatedly. The interface exposes more of Docker and host operations, so it demands more deliberate conventions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can either tool manage multiple VPSs?

Yes, but the documented models differ. Coolify can connect one instance to one or more workload servers and place resources where you choose. Its organizing concepts remain projects, environments, applications, databases, and services.

Komodo is designed around multiple managed servers. Its documentation says there is no limit on connected servers, although practical limits will still come from your Core host, network, storage, staffing, and the capacity of the servers themselves. Each additional host requires a Periphery installation and its own security and update process.

For a small portfolio of related websites, Coolify’s project and environment structure may be easier to navigate. For a fleet where host state, Compose stacks, procedures, and permissions are central, Komodo’s server-oriented inventory is more expressive.

Which tool gives you more Docker control?

Komodo exposes more of the Docker and host operating model in its documented resources. Containers, Compose stacks, image builds, Swarm resources, procedures, shell access, and API operations are all part of its scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coolify still gives you substantial Docker-based deployment control, but it packages that control around application resources. You choose the image or source, configure environment and storage, attach domains, inspect logs, apply health checks, and perform lifecycle actions through the application workflow.

Use this rule of thumb:

  • Choose Coolify’s level of control when the desired outcome is a running, reachable application and you want common web tasks grouped together.
  • Choose Komodo’s level of control when the desired outcome is repeatable management of hosts, containers, stacks, builds, Swarm services, and operational procedures.

Neither choice should be described as “no Docker access.” The distinction is whether Docker is the primary object you operate or the implementation underneath an application platform.

What do you need before installing either one?

Prepare the infrastructure and operating practices first. The exact package, operating-system, and version requirements can change, so check the current installation documentation for the release you plan to deploy.

Infrastructure checklist

  • A Linux VPS or server with enough CPU, memory, disk, and network capacity for both the management software and its workloads.
  • A stable hostname or IP plan for the management interface and each public application.
  • Administrative access to the host, with SSH keys and a firewall policy that exposes only required ports.
  • Docker installed where the chosen product requires it. Komodo’s setup documentation specifically requires Docker for Core, and every managed server requires Periphery.
  • DNS control for application domains and a plan for certificate issuance and renewal.
  • Persistent storage sized for databases, uploads, build caches, and logs.

Operational checklist

  • Separate credentials for administrators, deployment accounts, databases, and external services.
  • A documented secret-rotation process, including what must be restarted after a value changes.
  • Monitoring for disk exhaustion, memory pressure, failed health checks, certificate expiry, and unavailable agents or SSH connections.
  • Backups that cover both management data and application data, with restoration drills on a schedule you can sustain.
  • A recovery order: restore the management instance or Core, reconnect hosts, restore databases and files, then redeploy stateless services.

How should backups and recovery differ between them?

Self-hosting creates two separate backup problems: the management system’s configuration and the workloads’ persistent data. Backing up one does not automatically back up the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coolify’s self-hosted responsibilities include backing up and restoring the Coolify instance and protecting workload data. Database volumes, uploaded files, object-storage credentials, environment variables, and deployment definitions need an explicit policy. Treat a successful dashboard backup as only one part of recovery.

Komodo documents Core database backups and restoration from previous snapshots, and it documents scheduled database backups. Those facilities protect the Komodo management data; they do not define a universal backup policy for every container volume or external database you operate through it.

For either product, test a restore rather than assuming that a backup file is usable. A practical drill should confirm that you can recover credentials, reconnect the host or agent, recreate network and storage mappings, and bring up a representative stateful service without relying on an unavailable original server.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What security issues should you plan for?

The management interface is a high-value target because it can issue deployment and server actions. Put it behind strong authentication, restrict administrative access, and avoid exposing agent or SSH services to the entire internet when a narrower firewall rule is possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review permissions before inviting additional operators. Komodo’s documented role-based permissions and audit trails can support separation of duties, but they must be configured. In Coolify, use separate projects, environments, credentials, and server access paths so a routine application change does not require sharing the account that administers the entire instance.

Keep secrets out of Git repositories and Compose files that are broadly readable. Rotate credentials after staff changes, suspected exposure, or migration. Apply operating-system and Docker security updates independently of updates to Coolify, Komodo, Core, or Periphery.

Which should you choose for common VPS scenarios?

Choose Coolify when

  • You deploy web applications, databases, and supporting services and want them grouped as application resources.
  • Domains, HTTPS, health checks, logs, environment variables, storage, and lifecycle actions are more important than host-level orchestration.
  • Your deployment sources are Git, Dockerfiles, Compose files, or existing images.
  • You want one instance to coordinate workloads across several connected servers without making server objects the center of daily work.
  • Your operators prefer a guided workflow with fewer separate components to understand.

Choose Komodo when

  • You manage multiple Docker servers and want a central inventory with an agent on each host.
  • Compose stacks, image builds, Docker Swarm, browser terminals, procedures, and API automation are core requirements.
  • You need scheduled actions, shared variables and secrets, audit trails, or granular role-based permissions.
  • You want to redeploy Git-backed stacks with webhooks and target either regular servers or Swarm.
  • You are comfortable maintaining Core and Periphery and defining explicit operational procedures.

Consider running a proof-of-concept before committing

Use a disposable VPS and a non-critical application. Exercise the complete path you will depend on in production: connect the host, deploy from the source format you use, publish a domain, renew or replace a certificate, inspect logs, restart a service, rotate a secret, lose the management connection, and restore a database backup. This is not a benchmark; it is a compatibility and recovery check for your own architecture.

What are the common failure points?

The server connects but deployment fails

Check Docker availability, disk space, image access, environment variables, and the permissions of the SSH account or Periphery service. Read the deployment and container logs before changing multiple settings at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The application runs but the domain does not

Verify that DNS points to the workload server’s public address, the required ports are allowed, and the reverse-proxy or certificate configuration matches the hostname. Remember that Coolify’s application traffic is handled on the workload server, not by routing requests through the dashboard.

A Compose update removes data

Inspect volume declarations and mount paths before redeploying. Persistent data must be stored outside an ephemeral container layer and included in a backup plan; a management tool cannot recover data that was never persisted or backed up.

An agent or SSH connection breaks

Check firewall changes, key or certificate rotation, host updates, service status, and clock or DNS problems. For Komodo, verify Periphery on the affected server; for Coolify, verify the SSH path and account permissions.

The management instance is lost

Rebuild the management host from a known-good installation, restore its backed-up configuration or database, reconnect workload servers, and validate secrets and deployment definitions. Workloads may still be running, but your ability to operate them depends on having preserved the management data and access credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

So, which self-hosted tool fits your VPS?

Coolify is the better default for an application-centric VPS: you bring a server and source code, then use a project-oriented workflow for deployment, domains, HTTPS, health checks, logs, storage, and lifecycle operations. Komodo is the better default for infrastructure-centric Docker work: you bring servers, install Periphery, and manage containers, Compose, builds, Swarm, procedures, permissions, and automation directly.

Make the decision based on the abstraction your team will use every day, not on an assumed performance advantage. Recheck the current installation and version requirements before deployment, and treat backups, secrets, firewall rules, monitoring, and recovery testing as part of the product you are building around either tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I deploy an existing Docker Compose project with either tool?

Yes. Coolify accepts Docker Compose files as a deployment input. Komodo can use Compose files supplied through its UI, stored on the host, or pulled from Git; Git-backed stacks can also redeploy through webhooks.

Does Komodo support Docker Swarm while Coolify does not?

Komodo’s documented resources include Swarm stacks and the ability to target a Swarm. The cited Coolify documentation describes application, database, service, and Docker-based workflows but does not establish equivalent Swarm management, so verify any Swarm requirement against the current release before choosing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens to my applications if the management dashboard is temporarily unavailable?

Coolify’s documented traffic architecture sends HTTP requests to the reverse proxy on the workload server rather than through the dashboard. You should still plan for a management outage because deployments, configuration changes, and recovery actions may be unavailable until the instance or Core service is restored.

Are backups of the tool enough to restore my databases?

No. Management backups preserve configuration or Core data, while database volumes, uploads, and other persistent workload data require their own backups. Restoration should be tested on a separate host or environment so you know the data and credentials can be recovered.
