Copy Your Metroid Prime 4 Save Before the Endgame if You Want to Keep Exploring

GameSpot and GoNintendo warn that a Mission Complete save may prevent returning to pre-ending exploration in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Copy your save before the endgame if you want to keep that option.

If you want to finish Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and still have the option to return to pre-ending exploration, copy your save before entering the endgame sequence. GameSpot and GoNintendo both reported that saving the post-ending Mission Complete state can leave players unable to resume their earlier exploration state. That warning comes from contemporary reporting, not a located official Nintendo explanation of Prime 4’s ending mechanics.

Why copy your save before the ending?

GameSpot’s December 3, 2025 report warns that a player who wants to reach the ending while retaining the freedom to explore should copy the save or avoid overwriting it with a Mission Complete save. GoNintendo reported the same day that the endgame autosave could leave completion-focused players stranded before they finish exploring. Together, the reports point to a specific risk around the transition to the completed save—not a reason to copy your file after every routine save.

The practical precaution is to preserve a separate pre-endgame save before committing to the final sequence. If you want to pursue further exploration or completion afterward, that gives you a way back to the earlier state should the reported behavior apply to your game.

What to do before proceeding

  1. Before entering the endgame sequence, copy your current save so you retain a separate pre-ending state.
  2. Proceed to the ending only after preserving that copy if you want both to see the story through and keep the option of returning to exploration.
  3. Treat a Mission Complete save as potentially replacing access to the earlier state. The cited reports warn of that risk; they do not establish a guaranteed postgame free-roam mode or a way to reverse the transition.

What is—and is not—confirmed

The warning is supported by two secondary reports published December 3, 2025: GameSpot and GoNintendo. The official Nintendo support page about updating Metroid Prime 4: Beyond says save data remains available after downloading an update. It covers update installation, not whether an ending save can be undone or whether players can return to pre-ending exploration.
