Core Keeper is worth considering if you want an open-ended mining and crafting adventure where exploration, base-building, farming and combat share space with cooperative play. It is less suited to players looking for a tightly directed story. The game has also continued to change since its 2024 version 1.0 launch: the latest update established in the available official announcements is version 1.3, Riders of the Underground, released September 21, 2026.
What is Core Keeper like?
Core Keeper is a mining sandbox adventure by Pugstorm, published by Fireshine Games. Its setting is a procedurally generated underground world, where the main activities are gathering resources, crafting equipment, exploring, fighting creatures, farming and building a base. The official Steam listing presents those systems as parts of one loop: explore to find materials and discoveries, use what you collect to improve your tools and home, then venture farther.
That structure gives players room to decide what to prioritize. You can focus on pushing into new areas and taking on bosses, or spend more time building, organizing resources and tending a farm. The appeal is the combination of those pursuits in a shared underground world, rather than a single linear campaign with a fixed pace.
Is Core Keeper worth playing?
For players who enjoy setting their own goals in a progression-focused sandbox, the mix of discovery, crafting and base development is the strongest reason to play. Cooperative exploration adds another way to approach the world. If you want a strongly guided story or a consistently directed sequence of missions, the game’s open-ended building and collecting may feel like a detour rather than the point.

PC Gamer’s review covered the 1.0-era game, not the current 1.3 update. Reviewer Christopher Livingston wrote, “For a game that takes place entirely underground, Core Keeper does a great job of making you forget you’re buried.” That is one critic’s assessment of the earlier version, not a verdict on every later addition. Is Core Keeper fun solo, and can you play with friends?
The sources establish both solo play as a reader consideration and co-op as a central feature, but do not provide a tested solo-versus-co-op comparison. Solo players should expect to engage with the same broad cycle of exploring, gathering, crafting, combat and base-building without a teammate; whether that balance suits you depends on how much you enjoy self-directed progression.

For friends, Steam lists online co-op. Nintendo describes its Switch version as a one-to-four-player game. Those platform-specific descriptions do not establish that every platform has identical player limits, cross-play support or multiplayer rules, so check the current listing for the version you intend to play before coordinating a group. What changed in the latest Core Keeper update?
The official announcements identify version 1.3, Riders of the Underground, as live on September 21, 2026. Among its highlighted additions are rideable mounts and the Hookshot, giving players new traversal options. The announcement calls 1.3 “the first stop on the Road to the Maw,” framing it as part of a continuing update plan rather than the end of development. This matters when weighing older reviews: coverage of the 2024 version 1.0 launch cannot account for content introduced later. Conversely, the fact that the game has received updates does not by itself establish how every new feature performs or whether it changes the experience for a particular player.
Which version and platform should you check?
The available platform information is not enough to make a blanket claim about feature parity or cross-play. Confirm the current edition and multiplayer details on the store for your chosen platform, particularly if you plan to play with people using different hardware. Steam lists the game for PC, while Nintendo maintains a dedicated Switch listing. What do reviews and player ratings say?
Steam’s indexed listing snapshot surfaced in October 2026 showed 94% positive English-language user reviews among 23,651 reviews. This is a changing platform rating, not a critic score or a permanent measure; the live figure may differ. Check the Steam page for its current rating and review count.

Is there a physical Nintendo Switch version?
A physical console edition was announced, and Nintendo has an official Switch product listing. That supports the existence of a physical Switch release path, but it does not confirm current stock or the details of a particular retailer’s listing. Check retailer availability directly before buying. The official Nintendo Switch page identifies the game for that platform.
Are the Explorer’s Guide and soundtrack physical products?
The Steam listing offers the Explorer’s Guide and soundtrack as digital products. The official guide announcement describes a digital handbook with early- through late-game material, lore, tips, facts and illustrations, updated alongside version 1.3.
