No digital game has been shown to cure tuberculosis (TB). Some game-like features may help people stay engaged with prescribed treatment, and educational games may improve awareness. Those are support and learning roles—not evidence that playing a game kills TB bacteria or replaces medical care.
What does “help cure TB” mean?
TB is an infection that requires appropriate diagnosis and prescribed treatment. A cure is a clinical outcome; reminders, observed medication-taking and educational activities are not cures in themselves. A game or app should never be used to stop, delay or change anti-TB medicines. Treatment decisions belong with a qualified TB care team.
What has been tested in TB care?
A gamified app to support treatment adherence
A Malaysian study reported in 2024 evaluated Gamified Real-time Video Observed Therapy (GRVOTS), a mobile app combining video-observed treatment with game and motivational elements. In an eight-week, single-arm study, 71 patients from 18 facilities were expected to submit a daily video showing treatment-taking and report side effects. Investigators reported 90.87% video adherence and statistically significant changes in medication-adherence and intrinsic-motivation measures across study assessments.
These are adherence and motivation findings, not a cure rate. Because the study had no comparison group, it cannot establish that the app caused the measured changes. It did not test whether a game cured TB. A separate development and validation paper assessed the app’s game and motivation features; validating components is not the same as demonstrating a clinical cure.

Digital adherence tools more broadly
WHO guidance describes tools such as text messages (SMS), medication event monitoring systems (MEMS), and video-supported treatment (VOT) as ways to support adherence during long TB regimens. These approaches serve different functions: messages can prompt or communicate, monitors can record medication-container events, and video can let a care team observe treatment-taking. They support a treatment plan; they do not replace prescribed medicines or clinical follow-up.
Four pragmatic, cluster-randomized trials have also assessed digital adherence technologies for people with drug-susceptible TB in the Philippines, South Africa, Tanzania and Ukraine. Their results concern the specific technologies and clinical outcomes studied. They cannot be assumed to show that games work unless a game is directly evaluated.

What about games that teach people about TB?
A 2026 quasi-experimental study in Catalonia, Spain, evaluated a cooperative TB-awareness board game with 370 adolescents aged 14–17. It assessed TB-related knowledge before and after the educational intervention and at follow-up. This is evidence about an educational activity, not treatment for people with TB—and it was a board game, not evidence that a digital game cures the infection.

If a tool makes treatment routines easier to manage, it may be worth discussing with the TB care team as an optional adherence aid. Practical considerations include what it actually does, whether video is live or submitted later, what data are collected and who can see them, whether a suitable device and reliable connection are available, and how much time or effort it asks of the patient. A reminder or pill box can help with organization, but neither treats TB.
