Has Sony announced a new PlayStation Portal?
No. Sony’s official Portal information and updates reviewed as of October 7, 2026 do not confirm an updated model, a “Portal 2,” or an announcement date. That does not rule out a future announcement; it means there is no official timing or product detail on which to base a buying decision.

Sony has described the current Portal as continuing to evolve through improvements to Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. That refers to the experience and software, not a promise of new hardware. Sony’s 2025 corporate strategy presentation called Portal one of its “strong and profitable peripherals” and noted its beta cloud-streaming feature, but did not announce a refresh. What has changed on the current Portal?
Sony announced a global software rollout beginning March 18, 2026. Its headline addition was a 1080p High Quality mode for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming, with a higher bitrate than the default 1080p Standard mode. The update also refined the cloud-streaming interface and revised game-invite and trophy notifications and search. Sony’s current support information documents additional cloud-streaming functions, including streaming selected PS5 games from a digital library, searching for streamable titles, making purchases while streaming, joining multiplayer sessions from invites, and using accessibility features while streaming. It lists 1080p High Quality as the maximum resolution. The same page says that after updating, the device charges to 80% by default; Sony describes the limit as intended to support long-term battery health. Sony also reported that Cloud Streaming monthly users grew 162% year over year, with its footnote defining the comparison as December 2025 to January 2026. What the current PlayStation Portal does—and does not do
The Portal is a Wi-Fi remote player for compatible games installed on a paired PS5. It streams gameplay from that console rather than installing and running games locally as a standalone handheld. Sony specifies an 8-inch LCD with 1080p resolution and gameplay capability up to 60 frames per second. Sony’s PlayStation Portal product information.
Remote Play uses your PS5
For Remote Play, the PS5 must be connected to broadband and either powered on or in Rest Mode. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband connection and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience; network conditions can affect image quality and responsiveness. Remote Play does not require PlayStation Plus.

Cloud Streaming uses Sony’s servers
Cloud Streaming is a separate option for supported games and regions. It can work while the paired PS5 is powered off or being used by another account, but requires PlayStation Plus Premium. Buy the current model if you want a handheld screen for playing compatible PS5 games around your home or elsewhere with a suitable Wi-Fi connection, and you already have—or plan to use—a paired PS5 for Remote Play. Consider whether Premium’s supported cloud-streaming catalogue is useful to you; it is an additional route to games, not a requirement for Remote Play.

Waiting is reasonable if you do not need a remote player now and would only buy a device with a specific hardware improvement. But no official successor’s display, battery, features, price, or release timing has been announced, so there is no grounded way to compare those unknowns with the current model. Make the decision using the current device’s actual fit, price, and availability where you live rather than a rumored launch window.
