Could Trump’s Tariffs Make Gaming PCs and Consoles More Expensive?

A 25% US semiconductor duty took effect in January 2026, but it is narrow and exempts qualifying consumer applications. A later proposal that might reach consoles has no final rate or price estimate.

Not under the tariff that took effect in January 2026. That 25% duty applies to a narrow group of specified advanced computing chips and derivative products, and qualifying imports for non-data-center consumer applications are exempt. A separate report in August said the administration was considering a broader semiconductor tariff that could reach gaming consoles and other chip-containing products. It was not a final rule: no device-specific rate, effective date, product list, or retail price impact was established.

What the tariff in force actually covers

On January 14, 2026, the White House issued a Section 232 semiconductor proclamation imposing a 25% ad valorem duty, effective January 15, on a narrowly defined list of covered advanced computing chips and certain derivatives. The proclamation’s operative text does not establish a general 25% tariff on electronics, gaming hardware, or all semiconductor imports.

The proclamation also excludes qualifying covered products imported for non-data-center consumer applications, among other specified uses. Whether a product qualifies depends on the action’s terms and the import’s circumstances; the word “gaming” on a product listing does not by itself determine its customs treatment.

What was reported about a possible expansion

On August 27, 2026, Tom’s Hardware, citing a Politico report and unnamed sources, reported that a second round of semiconductor tariffs was being considered. A possible approach could extend duties beyond chips to products containing chips, including gaming consoles, and existing exemptions might not carry over. The report said the framework could still change substantially; it did not announce an adopted policy.

President Donald Trump’s January proclamation had already said: “Depending on the status or resolution of such negotiations, I may consider imposing significant tariffs on imports of semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and their derivative products, as well as an accompanying tariff offset program to incentivize domestic manufacturing.” That language signals the possibility of further action, not confirmation that a later tariff on gaming devices was imposed.

The reported proposal leaves key buyer questions unanswered:

  • Retail prices: No current, sourced estimate establishes how much a gaming PC or console would cost if the proposal were adopted.

Would gaming PCs be covered?

The report discussed laptops, gaming consoles, and data-center servers; it did not specifically establish that finished gaming desktop PCs would be covered. Nor does the presence of a chip inside a computer automatically show that the whole finished device would face a particular tariff. Separately imported components may be classified and treated differently from a complete PC, so the tariff on one covered chip cannot be treated as a blanket duty on every gaming system.

Customs treatment depends on the product’s classification and applicable implementation documents, not just its retail category. The USITC announced that 2026 HTS Revision 20 was published on September 28, 2026. The White House proclamation says the United States fully manufactures approximately 10% of the chips it requires and consumes roughly one quarter of the world’s semiconductors. Those figures are part of the administration’s stated supply rationale; they do not predict the price of gaming hardware.
