Che cosa ha annunciato Microsoft su Rare
Il 22 settembre 2026 Matt Booty, Chief Content Officer di Xbox, ha annunciato l’eliminazione di 268 ruoli in diverse aree: Halo Studios, altri studi first-party e le funzioni centrali e dirigenziali di Xbox Game Studios. Ha inoltre comunicato una riorganizzazione degli studi, precisando che «Activision will expand its remit to World’s Edge, as well as Rare». Xbox Wire non assegna quei 268 ruoli a Rare e non spiega in che modo il nuovo assetto influirà su Sea of Thieves.

Sea of Thieves chiuderà o riceverà meno contenuti?
La comunicazione di Microsoft non annuncia né una chiusura né una fine del supporto, e non indica tagli alla squadra o alla roadmap di Sea of Thieves. Questo non dimostra che l’organizzazione o i piani del gioco resteranno invariati: semplicemente, l’annuncio non chiarisce le conseguenze a livello di gioco. Le voci su una possibile chiusura, da sole, non costituiscono una conferma.

La cancellazione di Everwild nel 2025
Nel luglio 2025, dopo la cancellazione di Everwild, il direttore di produzione Drew Stevens disse che la decisione non aveva un impatto «diretto» su Sea of Thieves e che lo sviluppo del gioco proseguiva secondo i piani. Stevens aggiunse che la priorità dello studio era sostenere i colleghi le cui posizioni erano a rischio. Le dichiarazioni, riportate da GameSpot il 15 luglio 2025, descrivono la situazione di allora: non sono una garanzia sui piani successivi alla riorganizzazione del 2026.

La cadenza stagionale descritta da Rare
Nel riepilogo del Community Direct di luglio 2025, Rare delineò una stagione articolata in tre momenti: il primo dedicato a nuove funzioni sandbox e alla preparazione del mondo, il secondo a un grande evento live con elementi narrativi, il terzo a rivedere e rinnovare contenuti sandbox. Lo studio parlò anche di un maggiore equilibrio tra storia e funzionalità, e di interventi sulla salute del gioco, incluse prestazioni, contrasto ai cheater e l’esperienza su PC. Rare disse di aver ampliato il team dedicato alla Game Health; queste erano intenzioni e attività descritte in quel momento, non una verifica di ciò che è stato consegnato o di ciò che resta in programma. La roadmap annunciata nel 2026
In un’anteprima pubblicata a febbraio 2026, Rare annunciò che il successivo Community Direct sarebbe andato in onda il 30 marzo e avrebbe trattato i piani per la Stagione 20 e oltre. Lo studio descrisse l’obiettivo come una roadmap «più significativa e sostenibile». L’anteprima non documenta, da sola, i contenuti della trasmissione successiva né chiarisce l’effetto della riorganizzazione di settembre. Anteprima ufficiale su Steam.

In un riepilogo di un sondaggio tra i giocatori interpellati, Rare riportò le cinque aree più richieste per i contenuti futuri: nuove regioni e località, più contenuti narrativi, nuovi tipi di nave, nuovi eventi mondiali e nuovi strumenti e meccaniche sandbox. Lo studio precisò di non poter ancora indicare cosa avrebbe realizzato in quei campi: le preferenze raccolte non equivalgono a una roadmap confermata. Nello stesso riepilogo, Rare riportò che tra i giocatori coinvolti nel sondaggio il 64% aveva affinità con Athena’s Fortune e il 36% con The Reaper’s Bones. Sono percentuali riferite a quel sondaggio del 2025, non a tutta la base di giocatori di Sea of Thieves.
