For comfortable, low-stress survival, start with a Relaxed, Casual, Peaceful, or Custom preset, then adjust five things: enemy aggression, hunger and thirst, resource abundance, death penalties, and base decay or raids. Turn off anything that makes routine play feel like a timer or punishment; keep a little optional combat or exploration danger only if it adds fun. In many survival games, those choices can turn the same world into a gentler place to gather, build, explore, and play with friends.

What settings make a survival game feel cozy?

A cozy survival setup keeps the satisfying parts—gathering, crafting, building, exploring, and spending time with friends—while dialing down the penalties that make those activities stressful. There is no single setting that works for every player: one person may want peaceful creatures but still enjoy hunger management, while another may want to switch off every survival meter and focus on building.

Begin with a relaxed preset, then inspect the individual world or difficulty settings. The labels differ, but the useful controls generally fall into five groups:

  • Combat: Set enemies to passive, reduce their strength, or turn hostile spawns and raids off. If you want occasional excitement, leave player-initiated combat or optional bosses.
  • Needs: Disable hunger and thirst, or slow their drain. If food only provides benefits rather than preventing death, it can remain a satisfying part of the loop without becoming a constant deadline.
  • Resources: Choose abundant resources, extra deposits, greater harvests, or larger stacks. This reduces repetitive gathering without removing the reason to explore.
  • Failure: Select no item loss on death. Avoid settings that destroy carried items or delete the save.
  • Time pressure: Disable offline raids and base decay; consider free or discounted fuel and shorter crafting timers if waiting or upkeep is the stressful part.

Also choose a solo, friends-only, or PvE world instead of public PvP if the goal is a relaxed shared session. Public competition, offline attacks, and permadeath work against that goal even when the basic difficulty is low.

Keep a little danger if you enjoy it

Cozy does not have to mean consequence-free or uneventful. A useful middle ground is to make enemies weak or passive until provoked, keep story bosses optional until you are ready, or leave a non-lethal exploration hazard in place. That preserves a reason to prepare without making every errand a fight for survival.

Think of the controls as separate dials rather than a single easy-to-hard scale. If combat is fun but resource grinding is not, lower the grind and keep combat. If you enjoy collecting and building but dislike being hunted, change aggression without changing the rest of the world.

How do Palworld, Valheim, and No Man’s Sky handle cozy settings?

These three games illustrate different routes to a calmer survival experience: extensive custom settings, a convenient Casual world preset, and a Relaxed starting preset with many adjustable systems. The table summarizes the relevant controls; exact labels and available options can vary by game updates.

Game Starting point Useful cozy adjustments What to keep in mind
Palworld Custom world settings Reduce or disable enemy spawns or aggression; lower hunger drain; make raids mild or turn them off. Its settings can make combat optional while leaving creature collection, exploration, and base building as the focus.
Valheim Casual world Use passive-unless-provoked monsters, turn raids off, increase resource availability, and avoid permadeath rules. Food boosts health and stamina; forgetting to eat does not cause starvation death.
No Man’s Sky Relaxed preset Set resources to Abundant, damage and technology damage low or off, death consequences to No Item Loss, and enemies to Weak or Passive. Most custom settings can be changed later, but several choices are locked when the save is created.

Palworld: build a custom peaceful world

Palworld is the clearest example of making a survival game cozy through its world settings. Player guides describe a broad settings interface, and the official PlayStation listing presents peaceful life alongside Pals as a valid way to play. Reduce enemy spawns or aggression, lower hunger drain, and set raids to mild or off. That leaves room to collect Pals, explore, and develop a base without treating combat as the main event.

Keep enemies weak or player-initiated if you want occasional action rather than a wholly quiet world. If base defense is the part you dislike, change raids independently instead of switching off every enemy. Palworld reached its 1.0 release on 10 July 2026, according to PS Gaming’s launch reporting; a separate iGameMag snapshot dated 26 October 2026 listed 95% positive from 184,735 Steam reviews. Those figures describe publication and player-review snapshots, not a measure of how many players use cozy settings.

Valheim: use Casual for a gentler homestead

Valheim’s Casual world setting offers a compact starting point for players who want its Viking gathering and building without the standard level of pressure. Arcader’s September 2026 description says monsters still roam but do not attack unless provoked, home raids do not occur, resources are plentiful, and death does not take items. You can still choose when to fight bosses, so the campaign’s challenges need not dictate the pace of every session.

Food is less punishing here than in survival games where hunger is a death timer: food improves health and stamina, but you do not die of starvation if you forget to eat, according to Cheat Code Central’s September 2026 guide. Wooden structures with a roof also do not degrade simply because you have been away for a week, according to that guide. The result suits players who want food preparation and shelter to matter without turning them into continuous upkeep chores.

Valheim version 1.0 launched on 9 September 2026. iGameMag’s 2026 figures list 94% positive from 267,123 Steam reviews and a Metascore of 89; these are dated reception indicators, not performance measures or guarantees of what any player will enjoy. If you are playing with others, keep server rules aligned with the same low-pressure goal: avoid permadeath-style rules, leave raids off, and agree that boss fights happen when the group is ready.

No Man’s Sky: tune survival systems separately

No Man’s Sky has six presets: Relaxed, Normal, Survival, Permadeath, Creative, and Expedition. The Waypoint update (version 4.0) replaced rigid modes with 24 custom settings in four groups. NMS Guide, updated 30 July 2026, describes custom difficulty as a way to switch off hazards, fuel costs, combat, and death penalties independently, including mid-save. Relaxed is the practical starting point for exploration, building, and story play without as much friction from survival systems.

For a softer custom world, set Survival Difficulty to Relaxed; Natural Resources to Abundant; Sprinting to Infinite or Relaxed; Scanner Recharge to Very Fast or Fast; Damage Levels to None or Minimal; and Technology Damage to None. Choose No Item Loss for Death Consequences, Free or Discounted fuel and purchases, Abundant Availability, Weak enemies, and None or Minimal on-foot and space combat. Set creatures to Passive if hostile wildlife is unwelcome. Free base power and Fast or Very Fast reputation gain are further options for removing recurring chores.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Four settings are locked at save creation: Survival Elements, Recipes & Blueprints, Tutorial Missions, and Starting Slots. For a gentle first playthrough, set Survival Elements toward None or Health Only, keep recipes learnable unless you want a Creative-style sandbox, leave the tutorial enabled if you are new, and choose Maximum starting slots if inventory-upgrade hunting is not part of the fun. Choose these before starting the save because they cannot be adjusted later.

Creative mode removes threats and unlocks every blueprint, but disables achievements and trophies. Permadeath is a custom setup with Death Consequences set to Save Deleted; it must be selected when the save is created and cannot be added to an existing save. For relaxed play with ordinary progression, Relaxed or a custom configuration is a better fit than either extreme.

How can I turn off hunger without removing every challenge?

First check whether food is a survival timer or an optional way to improve your character. If food only grants helpful buffs, leaving it on can add preparation and choice without making a missed meal fatal. If hunger or thirst continually drains health, switch the meters off or slow them before lowering unrelated settings.

Grounded: custom settings for co-op or solo play

Grounded’s custom settings let players toggle hunger and thirst off, change bug health, increase resources harvested per swing, and disable friendly fire, according to Cheat Code Central’s 2026 guide. For a short co-op session, turning off need meters and increasing harvests can keep the group focused on exploring or fighting rather than repeating resource chores. Friends can join the shared world when the host is offline, according to Buckeye Bunny’s January 2025 roundup, and the game supports up to four players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solo players who find the ordinary world overwhelming can lower bug health or aggression as well as hunger and thirst. If you still want combat, adjust the creatures rather than turning off all threats. Be wary of challenge rulesets that add permadeath: a Medium Survival setup with permadeath is the opposite of a forgiving, low-stress configuration.

Subnautica: Freedom mode keeps exploration tension

Freedom mode disables hunger and thirst, according to Cheat Code Central’s 2026 guide, while oxygen and the unfamiliar ocean can still make exploration tense. It is a useful choice when cooking and hydration feel like chores but discovery is the point. Bases remain functional without a daily upkeep tax, and the campaign is roughly 30 to 40 hours, according to the same guide.

That does not automatically make the atmosphere soothing for everyone: the night ocean can still be frightening. If the remaining exploration pressure is the appealing kind, keep it; if it is not, choose a different survival game rather than expecting need meters to change the mood of every environment. Subnautica 2 entered Early Access on 14 May 2026 with four-player co-op, according to iGameMag’s 2026 coverage; its availability and features are distinct from the original game’s Freedom mode.

Which other survival games can be adjusted for a calmer session?

Several games support a gentler configuration, though some start closer to cozy than others. Choose based on the part of survival you want to retain—combat, farming, exploration, crafting, or social play—rather than assuming every peaceful toggle removes every source of pressure.

Peaceful or custom settings for combat-heavy worlds

  • Raft: Peaceful mode makes animals attack only if you attack first, so the shark is no longer a constant threat. Crop growing, cooking, water management, and island visits remain. Raise the difficulty if you later miss being hunted.
  • Enshrouded: The difficulty update added controls for combat, hunger, and resources, making it possible to emphasize exploration and building. It supports up to 16 players. Version 1.0 launched on 15 October 2026; iGameMag’s 2026 figures list 87% positive from 51,674 Steam reviews and a Metascore of 88. The same coverage flags performance complaints around 1.0: stutter can make play feel stressful even when survival settings are gentle.
  • Project Zomboid: Sandbox settings can switch zombies off while leaving crafting, building, foraging, farming, exploration, injuries, and illness in play. This suits players interested in the systems of survival rather than the horde, although disabling zombies does not eliminate every hazard.
  • Sons of the Forest: Peaceful mode prevents mutants and cannibals from spawning, but hostile animals can still appear. Story bosses must be triggered if you want to encounter them, so the main campaign’s combat need not intrude on a quiet building session.
  • Icarus: Easy difficulty in Outpost mode can disable predators. The starting biome is mostly safe, although occasional bears or wolves may still appear.
  • Smalland: Survive the Wilds: Peaceful mode and settings for creature strength and survival elements offer several ways to reduce pressure. A built tree-base can be brought to a friend’s world.

World settings and mods for a demanding sandbox

Vintage Story offers extensive world customization: disable seasons to avoid winter, increase resource deposits, and set mobs not to attack unless attacked. Mods can disable hostile mobs entirely, and the official mod hub offers one-click installs. It can still feel demanding even after adjusting its settings, so it is best for players willing to configure a world—and possibly add mods—before settling in.

V Rising can be made less time-intensive on private or local servers by increasing resource yields and stack sizes and shortening crafting timers. Public-server play is a different proposition: castle-heart decay means an ongoing upkeep concern. Pick the private configuration if avoiding a schedule is central to your idea of cozy.

Forever Skies has four difficulty levels, from easy to permanent death, with minimal combat and an airship that serves as a base. I Am Future makes its approach especially legible with a slider named “coziness level,” which adjusts hunger and threats such as weeds, leeches, and contamination.

Games that begin closer to cozy

If you would rather not tune a large menu, already-cozy games may be a better fit. Dinkum, Palia, and Solarpunk lean toward farming, decorating, community, or exploration over harsh survival penalties. iGameMag described Solarpunk as a cozier survival game set on floating islands and reported 81% positive from 1,992 Steam reviews in 2026. Those figures are a dated reception snapshot, not a measure of difficulty.

Lego Fortnite includes multiple difficulty modes and a dedicated cozy mode, is free, and lets friends play in a world when its host is away, according to Buckeye Bunny’s January 2025 roundup. It is a practical option to consider when children are joining a shared session. Cozy Grove, Roots of Pacha, Sun Haven, Len’s Island, and Paleo Pines are other examples associated with a gentler survival or crafting sensibility; Sun Haven’s toggles include combat, stamina use, and day speed.

Winter Burrow aims for a point “in between Don’t Starve and Animal Crossing,” as Pine Creek Games CEO and Creative Director Benjamin Salqvist put it to MineNest on 23 October 2026. It has health, hunger, and warmth meters; MineNest’s account says warmth depletes fastest and burrow upgrades improve the next day’s stats. Its date information is not reliable enough to establish current availability: a 2026-dated page still carries a 2025 Game Pass launch sentence. Check the current store listing for release status rather than relying on that stale date.

What settings should I avoid if I want low-stress play?

Some modes are designed around the very pressure that a cozy setup is meant to remove. Check world-creation rules and server settings before investing time in a save, especially when a setting changes how failure works or continues to apply while you are away.

  • Permadeath or save deletion: A single mistake can erase a world or character. Avoid it if you want experimentation and forgiving recovery.
  • Item destruction or full loot loss: Losing accumulated supplies can turn an ordinary death into a long recovery task. Prefer no item loss or another explicitly forgiving option.
  • Offline raids and base decay: These create pressure to log in on a schedule. Choose a world or server without them if playtime should fit around your life.
  • Public PvP: Other players can bring unpredictable conflict that enemy difficulty sliders do not control. Use solo, friends-only, or PvE instead.
  • High survival pressure with no custom controls: The Long Dark is a thoughtful, atmospheric survival game with customizable difficulty, but even adjusted it is not necessarily easygoing. Rust, Road to Vostok, and permadeath Minecraft servers are also poor fits for someone primarily seeking an unthreatening session.

How should I choose the right cozy survival setup?

Choose the least demanding preset that preserves the activity you are actually looking forward to. Then change one category at a time: if gathering is tedious, raise resources; if you dislike being interrupted, reduce aggression; if you want the world to be safe while you are away, eliminate decay and offline attacks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pick a starting preset. Look for Relaxed, Casual, Peaceful, Easy, Freedom, or Custom. Avoid Survival, Hardcore, or Permadeath as a starting point when low stress is the priority.
  2. Decide what kind of challenge you want. Keep optional bosses, weak enemies, or player-initiated combat if you enjoy them. Disable raids and relentless enemy attacks if they disrupt the activities you want to do.
  3. Make needs forgiving. Turn hunger or thirst off, or slow the drain. Keep food systems that function as optional buffs if preparing meals is enjoyable.
  4. Reduce repetition. Increase resource abundance, harvest yield, or stack size if the main frustration is gathering the same materials repeatedly.
  5. Protect your progress. Choose no item loss on death, and make sure the game will not delete the save. Avoid offline base decay and raids.
  6. Set social boundaries. Use solo, private, friends-only, or PvE play for a cooperative atmosphere rather than public PvP.
  7. Check locked settings before creating the world. In No Man’s Sky, Survival Elements, Recipes & Blueprints, Tutorial Missions, and Starting Slots are save-creation choices; set them deliberately before beginning.
  8. Play a short session and adjust. If the world feels empty, restore one optional source of danger. If it still feels like work, lower another pressure rather than forcing yourself to play at the default difficulty.

How we chose the examples

The examples here are selected for documented peaceful, relaxed, custom, or cozy settings that directly change combat, survival needs, resources, death penalties, or time pressure. They are not ranked by quality, and player-review or critic-score figures are included only when they add dated context—not as evidence that a particular setup is objectively relaxing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does playing on Easy or Peaceful make a survival game less rewarding?

Not necessarily. Progress can still come from unlocking recipes, improving a base, exploring new places, or completing a story; the main change is how much punishment or interruption accompanies those goals. If the world feels too empty, restore one optional challenge rather than reverting every setting at once.

Can I change a survival world from peaceful to harder later?

It depends on the game and on the specific rule. Check whether the setting is editable after world creation before you start, and make a backup or use a separate save if you want to experiment with a much riskier configuration.

Are cozy survival games always single-player?

No. Several support co-op or shared worlds, but player limits and host-offline behavior differ by game and platform. Verify the specific edition and multiplayer settings before inviting a group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a game still feel stressful after I turn off hunger?

Hunger is only one possible pressure. Aggressive enemies, dark or frightening environments, losing items on death, long crafting waits, performance problems, and online players can all create stress independently of food and thirst.
