Large Create packs containing 179–329 mods should start at 6 GB, with 8 GB a more practical target; a 12 GB tier gives larger public worlds extra headroom. RAM alone does not determine performance: Create’s contraptions, trains and vehicles consume server tick time, so CPU capacity, correct loader and Java versions, SSD storage, and measured distance settings are equally important.
What a Create server actually requires
Create is a Minecraft: Java Edition mod that runs on a dedicated server through a supported mod loader. The server simulates the world, redstone, moving contraptions, trains, vehicles and other automation; each player connects with a matching client installation. A vanilla server cannot load Create content.

The Create project lists Forge and NeoForge as supported platforms and identifies Minecraft 1.21.1, 1.20.1, 1.19.2 and 1.18.2 compatibility. Install the appropriate loader before adding Create. Flywheel no longer needs to be installed separately from Create 0.5.1 onward.
Loader, Minecraft, Java and modpack versions must be treated as one compatibility set. For the current 1.21.1 deployment path covered by hosting documentation, use NeoForge with Java 21. A 1.20.1 server follows a different Create, loader and Java combination. Do not copy a 1.21.1 setup onto 1.20.1 or mix client and server files from different releases.

RAM requirements by server size
Use the figures below as starting allocations, not guarantees. Actual consumption changes with player count, exploration, generated chunks, machines operating at once and the rest of the modpack.
| Workload | Starting memory tier | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Create alone with a few add-ons | 4 GB | A sensible starting point for a small private server, provided the host also has CPU capacity and the machine retains memory for the operating system. |
| Large Create pack with 179–329 mods | 6 GB minimum starting point | The researched hosting specification identifies 6 GB as a starting tier for this mod range; it is not a guarantee for every pack or player count. |
| Large pack, busier factories or more players | 8 GB suggested | Provides more room for mod initialization, chunk loading and simultaneous automation than a 6 GB allocation. |
| Large public world with simultaneous factories, trains and vehicles | 12 GB tier | Additional headroom for sustained activity; it does not compensate for an overloaded or heavily shared CPU. |
A pack’s server files may specify a 4 GB Java heap even when the machine has more memory available. The heap is only part of Java’s total footprint: the JVM, native libraries, mod loading, operating system, backups and monitoring tools also need memory. Never assign every gigabyte on a self-hosted machine to Java.
Forge’s server guidance warns that excessive allocation can create resource contention with the operating system, drivers and other applications. A very large heap can also make garbage-collection pauses more disruptive. Increase memory in measured steps only after logs and profiling show that the current allocation is the constraint.

How many players can 4 GB support?
There is no reliable player-number guarantee for “4 GB.” A lightly modded Create server with a few players may run acceptably, while a smaller group operating several complex factories can generate more tick work than a larger but idle world. Player count matters, but active contraptions, trains, chunk loading and exploration often matter more than the number shown in the player list.

CPU: the requirement people underestimate
Create’s moving machinery is simulated server-side. Mechanical components, contraption assembly, train schedules, vehicles and block updates all consume CPU time as the server advances each tick. When that work exceeds the tick budget, players see delayed machines, rubber-banding, late block updates and eventually watchdog or timeout errors.
Prioritize strong single-thread or per-core performance and fair CPU allocation. A host advertising many virtual cores is not automatically faster if your server receives a small, heavily contended share of a busy processor. After a sensible amount of RAM, faster cores can improve performance more than adding additional memory.
CPU selection checklist
- Choose modern per-core performance rather than judging by core count alone.
- Prefer dedicated or consistently available CPU capacity over an aggressively oversubscribed virtual machine.
- Consider player exploration and active contraptions, not only the number of installed mods.
- Use profiling to confirm whether tick time is CPU-bound before upgrading memory.
RAM and CPU solve different problems. More RAM helps the JVM hold loaded data and reduces memory pressure; it does not make a contraption’s calculations execute faster. Conversely, a fast CPU cannot prevent out-of-memory errors caused by an undersized heap.

An SSD is a sensible requirement for a Create server. World regions, mod files, logs, backups and chunk generation all perform disk I/O. NVMe storage reduces latency for these operations and is especially useful when players explore new terrain or when automated backups run. It cannot replace CPU capacity when contraptions consume the tick budget, and no universal capacity or IOPS figure is established for every Create installation.

Keep free space for the world, crash reports, logs and at least one usable backup set. A full disk can stop saves even when RAM and CPU are adequate. Schedule backups so their write activity does not coincide with the busiest factory periods when possible.
For rented hosting, select the region closest to most players. Create-capable regions documented for hosting include Europe, North America, Asia, South Asia and Australia. Physical distance and routing affect connection latency; a nearby region cannot fix server-side tick lag, but a distant one can make every interaction feel slower.
Hosting or self-hosting?
When a rental host is the practical choice
A rental host is usually simpler when you want a control panel, one-click or guided mod installation, scheduled backups and a data-center region near your group. You still need to verify the exact Minecraft, loader, Java and Create versions offered by the panel. A plan’s advertised RAM is not meaningful if the CPU is severely shared, so check whether CPU allocation is fair or dedicated.

Choose the nearest available region to the majority of players, then test the world under the heaviest normal activity. A 4 GB tier is a reasonable entry point for Create plus a few add-ons; move to 6 or 8 GB for a large pack rather than assuming a small plan will scale automatically.
When self-hosting makes sense
Self-hosting gives you control over the operating system, Java runtime, files and hardware. It also makes you responsible for updates, firewall rules, backups, power interruptions and CPU contention from every other application on the machine. Use the Forge or NeoForge server files that match the selected Minecraft release, edit user_jvm_args.txt for memory, and reserve RAM for the operating system and backup tools.
For a home server, an NVMe SSD, wired networking and a stable upload connection are sensible choices. The available evidence does not establish a universal Ethernet cable category or an upload-speed threshold, so avoid treating a particular cable label as a Create requirement. If players connect from outside your home, account for router configuration and your network provider’s inbound-connection policy.
Set up a compatible Create server
- Choose one Minecraft release. Decide whether the world is 1.21.1, 1.20.1, 1.19.2 or 1.18.2, then keep that choice fixed while selecting the corresponding Create release and loader.
- Select the loader. For the documented 1.21.1 path, install NeoForge and use Java 21. For another Minecraft version, follow that version’s documented Forge or NeoForge and Java combination instead of reusing the 1.21.1 files.
- Install the server files. Install the loader first, then place Create and every add-on in the server’s
modsdirectory. Do not add a separate Flywheel jar when using Create 0.5.1 or later unless that specific release explicitly requires one. - Match the clients. Every player needs the same Minecraft version, loader, Create version and modpack contents as the server. A missing, extra or different-version mod can prevent login or cause registry and world errors.
- Set an initial heap. Start around 4 GB for Create with a few add-ons; for a 179–329-mod pack, begin at 6 GB and consider 8 GB when activity or player count is higher. Leave room for the operating system and services.
- Generate and test a world. Join with the intended number of players, explore new chunks and operate the largest expected factories, trains and vehicles. Record tick behavior rather than judging only startup time.
- Add backups before inviting a public audience. Keep backups on storage with enough free capacity and test that a backup can actually be restored.
Tuning a laggy Create server
Identify the symptom first
- Low memory or crashes during loading: inspect the server log and increase the heap modestly only if the machine has spare memory.
- Normal memory use but delayed machines: suspect CPU or a specific contraption, train network, vehicle system or mod rather than immediately buying more RAM.
- Stutter while exploring: check chunk generation, storage latency and view distance.
- Players disconnect despite a healthy tick rate: investigate network path, region distance and client-side resource limits.
Reduce the work the server must simulate
Forge recommends lowering view distance and simulation distance when needed. Keep simulation distance equal to or slightly below view distance so the server does not actively simulate more chunks than players can see. Apply changes in small steps and retest the same workload.
Best Value

Use Spark to profile tick time and identify the mods, chunks or entities consuming the budget. Update, configure or remove the measured culprit; do not disable unrelated features simply because they are present in a large pack.
For large Create installations, leave workload-specific physics settings at documented defaults unless profiling supports a change. The hosting guidance specifically cautions that higher Aeronautics substeps are significantly more performance-intensive. Raising them without evidence can turn a marginally healthy server into a CPU-bound one.
Evaluate JVM arguments carefully
There is no universal custom JVM argument set for every operating system, Java release and modpack. If you change arguments, benchmark before and after under the same player and factory workload, and keep a known-good configuration so you can revert quickly. A setting that helps one pack may increase pauses or instability in another.
A practical sizing decision
- Choose 4 GB when Create is the main mod, the group is small, the world is private and the host offers a capable CPU.
- Choose 6 GB as the starting point for a 179–329-mod Create pack, then watch memory use and tick behavior during exploration and factory operation.
- Choose 8 GB when that large pack has more players, many loaded chunks or several simultaneous machines and trains.
- Choose 12 GB for a larger public world that must absorb concurrent factories, trains and vehicles, while still requiring strong per-core CPU performance.
Whichever tier you select, verify the loader and Java match the Minecraft release, use SSD or NVMe storage, retain operating-system headroom, choose a nearby region and profile real workloads before escalating hardware. Create servers perform best when resources are balanced rather than when the Java heap is simply made as large as possible.
