If you mean the story, plan for about 70 hours to finish Crimson Desert before Charting the Unknown. HowLongToBeat’s October 2026 player data puts the main story at 69.5 hours, with most focused runs landing around 60–80 hours and rushed runs near 50 hours. The campaign ends with Chapter 12 and the Journey’s End epilogue.
You do not need to see the credits to access every expansion system. Reaching Chapter 3: Howling Hill and establishing Greymane camp opens the ocean, ships, upgraded housing groundwork and businesses. The DLC’s character epilogues, Garden of Trials and claimable castles remain post-game content.

That is time to finish the Prologue, 12 chapters and Epilogue, not time to complete every activity. A normal story-and-side-content playthrough is substantially longer, while 100% completion is measured in hundreds of hours. Charting the Unknown itself had no HowLongToBeat playtime submissions on October 29, 2026, so there is no reliable expansion-length number to add.

HowLongToBeat also reports 141 hours 55 minutes average and 135 hours median for Main + Sides, and 262 hours 24 minutes average and 251 hours median for Completionist. What must be finished to unlock Charting the Unknown’s story?
The expansion’s three character stories are locked behind the base-game ending. Finish the campaign through The Void in Chapter 12: The Abyss, then complete the Journey’s End epilogue. After the credits, the new stories for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane can be started from the Journal menu.

Pearl Abyss describes these stories as starting through the Journal after the main story. GAMES.GG likewise characterizes most of the new content as post-game and recommends completing the base story first. You do not need all 76 bosses, every side quest or a completionist save.
When can you start the ocean, ships and housing?
Those systems use an earlier gate: Chapter 3: Howling Hill. Once Homestead, The Face Behind the Mask and Pioneering lead to an established Greymane camp, the expansion’s ocean-related progression becomes available even if the final chapter is unfinished.
What Howling Hill opens
- Ocean storyline: the sea-focused questline begins after completing the Howling Hill portion of the main story.
- Ships and sailing: set up camp, follow the ship questline, then obtain a vessel through a Fleet Office manager or by dispatching comrades.
- Housing groundwork: camp establishment is required, and upgraded housing also needs Luke’s Request in Grounds of the Sunrise.
- Businesses and facilities: liberate the relevant region and finish setting up camp before management options appear.
There is no published independent average for the number of hours it takes to reach Howling Hill. Chapter 3 is the honest answer; converting it into an hour estimate would imply precision that the available data does not support.

What does not have a story prerequisite?
Diving and underwater exploration can be used as soon as the DLC is installed. Your breath meter still limits time below the surface, while diving suits extend that limit. The pre-order Charter’s Diving Set and Charter’s Light Diving Set are examples of such equipment, not requirements for unlocking the feature.

Why does a “main-story-only” run still take around 70 hours?
Crimson Desert does not let players treat every objective as a straight sprint between cinematic missions. Its progression systems and travel design add time even when optional content is kept to a minimum.
Power comes from Abyss Artifacts, not a conventional level curve
Abyss Artifacts are spent on skills and attributes and are earned from enemies, quests, puzzles and challenge tallies. Main-path rewards are not always enough for later bosses. Some objectives can fail or remain inaccessible when a relevant attribute is too low, so a supposedly pure mainline run may need detours for artifacts or gear.
Travel is deliberately frictional
Fast-travel points sit in wilderness rather than being placed in every settlement. Abyss Cressets and Ancient Ruins require puzzles, some main-path chapters have no fast travel at all, and the Howling Hill teleporter has additional requirements. Those interruptions make the campaign longer than a chapter-count calculation suggests.
Bosses and presentation slow the route
GAMES.GG notes that boss difficulty can force Abyss Artifact or Abyss Gear grinding, with some focused players still reaching 75–95 hours. GameSpot also points to cryptic interface elements and bugs that added time in its launch-day guide. A separate account cited by GAMES.GG described a 150-hour first playthrough after lingering in Hernand, illustrating how quickly exploration can move a “story run” into standard-playthrough territory.

The main narrative contains 168 quests across 14 segments when the Prologue and Epilogue are counted. The chapter names below are useful for tracking the expansion gate without spoiling individual scenes.

Pyweldb lists the same broad chapter structure and 168-quest total, but its older 35–50-hour focused-run estimate does not match the larger post-launch player sample. Use its chapter count, not its outdated hour band, when planning your route.

The expansion is more than three epilogues. It extends Pywel into a maritime and settlement-focused layer that can be sampled before the credits, while reserving its most narrative-heavy rewards for a completed campaign.

What should you do before buying or starting the DLC?
- Check your story position. If you have not reached Howling Hill, continue the main quest until Greymane camp is established.
- Choose your target. Stop at camp if you mainly want ships, sailing, diving, housing groundwork or businesses; continue to Journey’s End for the character stories, castles and Garden of Trials.
- Complete Luke’s Request. This Grounds of the Sunrise quest is an additional requirement for upgraded housing.
- Liberate relevant regions. Businesses remain tied to regional liberation as well as camp setup.
- Update to the current Enhanced build. The expansion sits on the live version, so install the latest update before troubleshooting missing menus or quests.
- Prepare resources. Keep silver available for Fleet Office ships and gather housing materials before committing to the new construction systems.
- Keep playing if you want every story on launch day. An unfinished save can use the ocean and settlement features, but it will still be blocked from the post-game character content until Journey’s End.
How many players had finished the campaign before launch day?
A CQ-esports report published October 29, citing August 2026 platform-dashboard figures whose original publisher was not identified, put main-story completion at 9.7% on Steam, 13% on Xbox and 15.2% on PS5. These percentages should be treated as a secondary report, not as direct statistics published by Valve, Microsoft or Sony.
The practical implication is straightforward: many owners who bought the expansion on day one were still somewhere in the campaign. The Howling Hill gate gives those players immediate access to sailing, diving, housing and businesses, while the full story gate prevents the new epilogues from spoiling the base-game ending.

No. Completing the campaign is sufficient for the post-game story, Garden of Trials and castle content. You can leave optional bosses, collectibles, side quests and region cleanup for after the expansion; the completionist estimates of roughly 250–400 hours describe a different goal, not a requirement.
Pearl Abyss originally described Crimson Desert as offering around 50–80 hours with a definitive ending in a 2024 investor-relations statement quoted by secondary outlets. That was a pre-launch planning range for the whole single-player experience, not an official “hours until DLC” target. Late-2026 player data is the better guide for the actual campaign finish.

The sample sizes differ sharply, so these numbers describe reported play patterns rather than a guaranteed platform advantage.
Crimson Desert released in North America and Europe on March 19, 2026. The expansion’s Mac App Store absence at launch is a storefront limitation, not a different campaign length.

Yes. Ownership does not require a completed save, and the expansion can be installed while you are still progressing through the campaign.
