What did Lybee Park say about Crimson Desert reviews?
In an interview published by The Game Business on October 8, 2026, Park said reviewers played a build that was “not the exact same version as the launch game” and had limited time. She suggested that critics often focus on the main story, while the game’s appeal is also found in optional discoveries across its world.

“I am not sure critics had the fair chance to explore those during the review period,” Park said. The Game Business interview was later reported by Video Games Chronicle on October 9. VGC says the interview question referred to a 77 Metacritic critic score and Park’s view that reviewers did not receive the optimal experience.
Does that explain the difference between critic and player scores?
It is Park’s interpretation, not an established cause. The sources do not provide a study showing that review-window length produced a score gap, or that reviewers would have scored the game differently with more time. Critics can only assess the version they receive; the length and timing of that window are part of the publisher’s review arrangements.

Score snapshots also need careful handling. The Game Business cited a 77 Metacritic critic score in its October 8 interview article. Metacritic’s page accessed October 9 displayed an 8.8 user score from 13,492 user ratings and listed 115 critic reviews. GamesRadar reported an 8.7 user score on October 9, illustrating that these aggregates can vary by source and snapshot. They are not a synchronized comparison, and user ratings and critic reviews are different measures.
Why does Park emphasize exploration?
Pearl Abyss describes Crimson Desert as an open-world action-adventure built around exploration, combat, and traversal. Park’s argument is that its “unique charm” is distributed through small, easy-to-miss details rather than concentrated only in the main quest. If a review prioritizes the main storyline, it may give less attention to those optional experiences—but the interview does not establish how much they affected any particular review.

What changed after the review build?
Pearl Abyss announced the worldwide release on March 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Mac, Epic Games Store, and ROG Xbox Ally. The game has also received post-launch patches and updates, including changes involving difficulty, storage, and graphics, according to VGC. Pearl Abyss’s current game site describes an Enhanced edition, additional language support, post-launch updates, and a free upgrade for current owners.
That means a review of a pre-launch build should not automatically be treated as a review of the current version. It also does not make the original review invalid: it records how the version supplied to critics performed during their review period.

How should readers compare the scores?
Before treating critic and player aggregates as a direct comparison, check what each number represents and when it was recorded. In particular, look for:
- Platform and date: aggregates can change over time and differ across services.
- Measure and sample: critic reviews and user ratings are separate populations; note the rating count as well as the score.
- Build or version: a pre-launch review build may differ from the updated game currently available.
- Review conditions: consider the time critics had, while recognizing that a longer window does not guarantee a different verdict.
