The distinction matters: more room to carry items is not the same as a place to store them.
What reviewers criticized
Reviews highlighted two related frustrations: limited carrying capacity and the lack of usable private storage. PC Gamer noted that players could not put items in the cabinets in their houses and that storage options were not available on Day 1. These were separate problems, even if both made managing items awkward.

How inventory capacity changed before and around launch
Notebookcheck reported that the inventory initially had as few as 20 slots, then was raised to 50 after complaints. It also reported that a GamingTrend reviewer saw capacity improve during testing and had 226 slots by the end of the review process. Those figures describe different points and measures in the game’s progression; they should not be added together or treated as a single launch-day total.

A separate patch-history compilation says version 1.00.02 arrived on Steam before global unlock on March 19 and describes the Day One update as addressing review feedback, including inventory limits. It also lists changes to cutscene fast-forwarding, the Tenebrum puzzle replay requirement, and boss attacks during revival animations. This is secondary reporting, and it notes that rollout timing varied by platform, so it does not establish that every player received the same build at the same time.

Private Storage was a later addition, not part of the pre-release inventory changes. Forbes reported that an update on March 22 added Private Storage with 240 extra slots. That came three days after release.
