MLB The Show 26 is at its best pitch to pitch: its on-field baseball remains the clear draw, and its launch-period reviews praise both the gameplay and the amount of content. But that strength does not carry every mode. Critics describe Franchise and Road to the Show as short on meaningful evolution, while opinions differ on Diamond Dynasty’s value and monetization. The title’s “MVP” image is a metaphor for that split—not a claim that an in-game award winner or real player falters in the postseason.
Is MLB The Show 26 worth buying?
That depends on what you want from a baseball game. If your priority is the feel of batting, pitching, and fielding, launch-period reviewers found a lot to like. Operation Sports reviewer Christian Smith wrote, “From a pure gameplay perspective, you’d be hard pressed to find a game as robust and complete as MLB The Show 26.” MeriStation also praised the gameplay and breadth of content.

The case is less compelling if you expect a major transformation to the single-player modes or a substantial visual leap. Operation Sports criticized Franchise and Road to the Show for feeling stagnant, while MeriStation called the release iterative and noted that it looked similar to the prior two editions. Neither review establishes how subsequent patches may have changed the game.
MLB The Show 26 launched on March 17, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Digital Deluxe early access began March 13, according to the PlayStation Blog announcement and PlayStation Store listing. Current prices and availability vary and are not established here.

What’s new in MLB The Show 26?
Official product materials announce additions across batting, pitching, Franchise, Road to the Show, and content. Those announcements describe what is included; they do not, on their own, show how substantial the changes feel in play.
- Big Zone hitting: A more casual zone-based batting option. The official manual says it removes the PCI and gives up the possibility of Perfect/Perfect contact.
- Bear Down Pitching: A limited focus resource intended to provide extra control in clutch situations, as described in the official feature announcement.
- Franchise updates: The official materials describe a Trade HUB, revised trade and lineup logic, a revamped front office, streamlined seasons, Custom Game Entry, and improved player regression. See the PlayStation Store feature listing and PlayStation Blog announcement.
- Road to the Show: The official store describes expanded amateur years, with a path from high school through college toward a professional career: PlayStation Store.
- More animations: The developer announced more than 500 new gameplay animations. This is a developer-published feature count, not an independent performance measurement: PlayStation Blog.
- World Baseball Classic and Negro Leagues: Official materials describe World Baseball Classic content in Diamond Dynasty and the return of Storylines: Negro Leagues Season 4: PlayStation Blog and PlayStation Store.
How good is the on-field gameplay?
This is the strongest part of the launch-period reviews. Operation Sports singled out the baseball action, along with PCI sensitivity and depth-of-field options as quality-of-life improvements. MeriStation likewise praised the gameplay. Smith’s top-line assessment reflects the distinction: he considered the moment-to-moment play robust even as he criticized the modes surrounding it.

- Includes 5 The Show Packs to enhance your gameplay experience.
- IMMERSIVE GAMEPLAY — Step up and take control in the most immersive MLB The Show yet, with new mechanics and deeper experiences.
- ROAD TO COOPERSTOWN — Begin your journey to greatness with the new Road to Cooperstown and expanded Amateur Years Career.
- DIAMOND DYNASTY — Build your ultimate fantasy team with new Red Diamond rarity tier and World Baseball Classic player cards.
- REVAMPED FRANCHISE — Experience a revamped front office with streamlined seasons, custom game entry, and a new Trade Logic System.
That praise is a reviewer judgment, not a guarantee that every player will prefer the same settings or batting style. Big Zone, for example, trades away PCI control and Perfect/Perfect contact for a more accessible approach, according to the official manual.
Is Franchise mode better this year?
It has announced interface and logic changes, and MeriStation specifically praised the Trade HUB. But the launch reviews do not treat those changes as a decisive reinvention. Operation Sports says Franchise still feels stuck in time, despite the mode’s announced adjustments to trades, lineups, rotations, player regression, and season flow.

- Deeper Player Progression in "Create a Player" Mode

- Showcase technology with 3D game functionality and PlayStation Move support
Smith described Franchise and Road to the Show together as “stagnant, lacking the depth, evolution, and immersion needed to keep players invested long-term.” That is his criticism of their long-term appeal, not a claim that the announced features are absent.
Is Road to the Show worth playing?
The expanded amateur route gives a player more of a career path before reaching the professional level, according to the official store description. MeriStation nevertheless wanted a deeper story outside the ballpark, and Operation Sports questioned the mode’s long-term depth. If you value the progression and baseball itself more than a substantial off-field narrative, the additions may still interest you; the reviews do not describe the mode as a major narrative overhaul.

How has Diamond Dynasty changed?
Diamond Dynasty remains a card-collection mode with continuing content, including World Baseball Classic material announced for this edition. Reviewers differed on the experience around that content: Operation Sports raised concerns about the mode’s direction toward monetization practices the series had once avoided, while MeriStation characterized it as generous. Those are distinct critical assessments, not a settled consensus about the mode’s value or spending requirements.

- Mostly play Franchise or Road to the Show: The announced additions are real, but reviewers questioned whether they deliver enough depth or evolution to change the long-term experience.
- Play Diamond Dynasty: The new content may appeal, but take into account the difference between MeriStation’s positive view of its generosity and Operation Sports’ concern about monetization.
- Want a visual overhaul: MeriStation found the game visually similar to the prior two editions, so the reviews do not make a strong case for buying it on that basis alone.
- Choose the right version: The game launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch.
