CodeWeavers says its February 10, 2026 release made a long list of Windows games newly playable or significantly improved on macOS, including HELLDIVERS 2, Starfield, God of War Ragnarök and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
But “works” does not mean perfect performance, guaranteed multiplayer or compatibility with every Mac, launcher, patch and anti-cheat system. The latest release documented here is CrossOver 26.3.0, which followed the original release with fixes for Diablo IV, Helldivers 2, Epic Games Launcher and GOG Galaxy. What CrossOver 26 actually changed
CrossOver is a commercial Windows compatibility layer, not a conventional virtual machine. It translates Windows software commands so applications can run through macOS without installing Windows. You still need a legitimate copy of the game and, where required, its Windows launcher and account.
CrossOver 26’s main technical changes include:
- Wine 11.0: the Windows-compatibility foundation, with more than 6,000 changes.
- D3DMetal 3.0: translates DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 graphics calls to Apple’s Metal API.
- DXMT v0.72: another Metal-based Direct3D translation component.
- vkd3d 1.18: used for Direct3D 12 translation.
- Wine Mono 10.4.1: provides compatibility for software that depends on Microsoft .NET technologies.
These layers matter because modern Windows games depend heavily on DirectX. A game can install successfully yet fail when it initializes its graphics engine, shaders, launcher or online services. Improving graphics translation can turn a non-launching title into a playable one, but it cannot automatically solve anti-cheat, DRM, unsupported drivers or server-side platform checks.

CrossOver 26 also exposes settings for D3DMetal, DXVK, wined3d, MetalFX-powered DLSS, MSync and High Resolution Mode. D3DMetal is generally the most relevant starting point for modern DirectX 11 and 12 games. DXVK uses Vulkan-based translation for Direct3D 10 and 11, while wined3d is an older Wine graphics path that can act as a fallback. CrossOver 26.3 is more important than the original launch
CrossOver compatibility can change after a game or launcher update. That makes the point release you install important.

Use the newest available 26.x build rather than assuming CrossOver 26.0 represents the final state. CrossOver’s official changelog is the best place to check whether a recent game or launcher regression has already been addressed.

How to check whether your game works
- Search the exact title and edition. A Windows release, remaster, launcher version or store edition may behave differently from another.
- Check the CrossOver version and platform. Compatibility reports are version-specific and may distinguish Intel Macs from Apple-silicon Macs.
- Read the rating, Tips and Forums sections. Dependencies, launch options, graphics backends and workarounds may be essential.
- Check the launcher separately. Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy, Battle.net and other clients can fail even when the game itself is compatible.
- Verify online features. A title can render and play offline while multiplayer, authentication or anti-cheat remains unavailable.
CodeWeavers’ ratings are not a simple “yes” or “no” guarantee:
- Unrated: no reports yet.
- One star: will not install.
- Two stars: installs but will not run.
- Three stars: runs with significant problems.
- Four stars: runs well with minor glitches.
Visit the CrossOver Compatibility Database before purchasing an expensive game solely because it appears on a launch list.

How to install a Windows game on a Mac
1. Confirm your Mac and macOS version
CrossOver Mac supports Intel Macs and Apple-silicon Macs beginning with M1. CodeWeavers lists at least 1 GB of free disk space for the application itself, but games and launchers require substantially more. Performance depends on the Mac’s GPU capabilities, memory, processor, macOS version, game patch and graphics API; a powerful Apple-silicon Mac is not an automatic compatibility guarantee.
macOS 26 Tahoe requires CrossOver 25.1.1 or later. Beta or unreleased macOS versions are not officially supported. Check CodeWeavers’ current requirements at the CrossOver product page.
2. Install CrossOver
Download CrossOver from CodeWeavers, open the downloaded installer in Finder, launch the application and sign in or start the trial. CrossOver offers a trial, so it is sensible to test the exact game before committing to a purchase. The price displayed by CodeWeavers during the supplied research was $74, but price, taxes, regional currency, renewal terms and support entitlements can change.

3. Use the installation recipe
Choose the game or its launcher in CrossOver’s installer assistant and follow the recipe. Keep automatic recipe downloads enabled so CrossOver can synchronize current installation guidance. When practical, place a problematic launcher or game in its own bottle. Separate bottles can make recovery easier, although they use additional storage and are not required for every title.
4. Start with the default settings
Do not immediately enable every performance option. Launch the game with the recipe’s defaults, then change one setting at a time. Restart the game after changing a graphics backend and record the original setting so you can revert.
- Try D3DMetal for modern DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 games when the recipe or database recommends it.
- Try DXVK for titles that behave better through Vulkan-based Direct3D 10/11 translation.
- Use wined3d only when it is recommended or another backend fails.
- Do not assume DLSS always improves performance; CodeWeavers notes that some games perform worse with it enabled.
- Use High Resolution Mode cautiously. It can improve detail in applications that handle high-DPI rendering correctly, but it can also create display problems.
- MSync may improve performance in some applications, but results vary.
5. Update before troubleshooting
CrossOver checks for updates at launch. You can also use CrossOver > Check For Updates. An expired license may require renewal before an update can be applied. Updating is especially important when a title broke after a game or launcher patch.

Online multiplayer and anti-cheat
Single-player compatibility does not prove that multiplayer works. Kernel-level or incompatible anti-cheat, Windows-only drivers, DRM, unsupported overlays, launcher authentication and server-side platform checks can block online play. Check current reports for the exact title before buying if multiplayer is essential.
Launchers
A game may be compatible while its launcher is not. CrossOver 26.3’s fixes for Epic Games Launcher and GOG Galaxy demonstrate why the launcher must be treated as part of the compatibility chain. Battle.net and Steam can also require title-specific fixes or workarounds.

Game patches
Compatibility layers can be disrupted by updates that change graphics initialization, launchers, DRM or anti-cheat. If a game worked until a patch, first update CrossOver, read its changelog, inspect the database and review current game-specific reports. A broken patch does not necessarily mean permanent incompatibility.
Controllers, mods and peripherals
Rendering is only one part of the experience. Controllers, overlays, mods, mod managers and Windows-only peripheral utilities may have separate compatibility problems. Confirm these features independently rather than treating a general “runs well” rating as proof that every accessory or mod works.
Older 32-bit games
CrossOver 26 creates new bottles as 64-bit by default, although 32-bit Windows applications can still run inside 64-bit bottles. The deprecated 32-bit-bottle option should be tried only when a 64-bit bottle fails, and CodeWeavers says that option is scheduled for removal in CrossOver 27. Owners of older games should therefore avoid assuming that legacy compatibility will remain unchanged on future macOS and CrossOver releases.
Quick recovery steps
If a game installs but will not launch:
- Update to the latest available CrossOver 26.x release.
- Read the game’s current Compatibility Database entry, Tips and Forums.
- Try the recommended graphics backend.
- Confirm that the launcher has not recently updated or failed authentication.
- Create a fresh bottle and reinstall if the existing bottle may be damaged.
- Check for anti-cheat, DRM or online-service restrictions.

Is CrossOver 26 worth buying?
It is worth trying when you already own a Mac and have a specific game with a strong, recent compatibility report. The trial lets you test the actual title, launcher and Mac configuration rather than relying on a broad launch announcement.
CrossOver is a poor bet if you need guaranteed competitive multiplayer, depend on anti-cheat, want every new release to work immediately after launch, or are considering an unrated or known-broken game. It is also not a replacement for a gaming PC in every situation, and purchasing CrossOver does not include the games themselves.
The practical decision rule is simple: check the exact game in the database, confirm the required launcher and online features, install the current 26.x build, and test before buying. If those checks are favorable, CrossOver 26 is one of the more credible ways to play a substantial selection of Windows games on macOS without installing Windows.
