Facial age estimation is the usual verification method, while users aged 13 and older may also verify with a government-issued photo ID.
This guide reflects Roblox’s published rules as of August 10, 2026. The policy originally reported as a coming change in November 2025 is now live, and the newer age-based account system means the effect is no longer limited to messaging.

The short answer: playing is usually possible, chatting is not
Roblox’s age check is primarily a gate for communication features. If you decline a selfie-based age check, Roblox does not automatically ban you from the platform or categorically block every experience. However, the account will not be able to use chat, and younger or unverified accounts may have a narrower game catalog under the Roblox Kids and Roblox Select system.

So both of these common statements are incomplete:
- You must verify your age to play Roblox: too broad.
- Verification only affects chat: no longer fully accurate because Roblox Kids and Roblox Select can affect game discovery and access.

What changed since the November 2025 announcement?
The original announcement described a staged rollout. Much of that language is now historical rather than future guidance.

The current policy is summarized in Roblox’s global age-check announcement. Roblox’s original July announcement called the feature Trusted Connections; the current name is generally Trusted Friends.
What Roblox’s age check actually does
Roblox uses two related but different processes:
- Facial age estimation: Roblox asks the user to record a selfie-style video. Its technology analyzes facial features to estimate an age group.
- ID verification: Users aged 13 and older can submit a government-issued photo ID and complete a selfie comparison. This route verifies the person’s age against the document rather than merely estimating an age from facial features.
The first process should be called facial age estimation, not casually called facial recognition. Facial recognition or identity matching is relevant to the ID route, where a selfie is compared with the identification document.

Roblox uses Persona for these verification services. The exact screens and availability can vary by country, device, and account state.
How to complete Roblox facial age estimation
On the Roblox app or website:
- Log in to the Roblox account.
- Open Settings.
- On desktop, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner. On mobile, select More (…) in the lower-right corner, then open Settings.
- Open Account Info.
- Find Age Group and select Continue with selfie.
- Follow the camera prompts and keep the face centered and visible.
The device needs a working camera. Roblox’s age-estimation instructions specifically warn parents to keep the child in front of the camera when checking a child’s account. A parent who completes the process with their own face may cause the account to be assigned the wrong age group.
How ID verification works
ID verification is available to users aged 13 and older. It may be useful if the facial estimate is wrong, if a user cannot or does not want to rely on the estimate, or if the account needs a stronger age correction route.
- Go to Settings → Account Info.
- Select the option to verify the birthday with an ID.
- Allow camera access.
- Scan a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or residency card.
- Complete the requested selfie comparison.
- Return to the Roblox session and wait for the result. Roblox says the pass or fail decision may take several minutes.
Users under 13 cannot simply choose the ID route themselves. For a child’s account, the relevant correction and parental-control path is generally handled through a linked parent account.

Roblox assigns an age group—not a public exact birthday
Roblox’s published age groups are:
- 5–8
- 9–12
- 13–15
- 16–17
- 18–20
- 21+
These age bands are used to determine which communication features and users are appropriate to connect with. The system is not designed to let every player chat only with people who share the exact same birthday.
For example, Roblox has said that a user estimated to be 12 may be able to chat in an experience with users up to approximately 15, while users aged 16 or older are blocked from chatting with that user. An estimated 18-year-old may chat with users aged 16 and older, with eligible Trusted Friends providing a limited route for certain cross-age relationships.
The exact result depends on the age group, the type of chat, the region, privacy settings, parental controls, and whether the players are connected as Trusted Friends. Roblox’s current messaging and chat documentation should take priority if the options on an account differ from these general examples.
Chat, voice chat, and other communication features are not necessarily identical
The age check is required for communication access where Roblox chat is available, but individual communication modes can have additional requirements. In-experience text chat, broader Chat or Party features, voice features, privacy settings, parental controls, and regional availability may not all behave in exactly the same way.

Completing an age check therefore does not guarantee that every communication feature will immediately appear. It establishes the age group Roblox uses when applying the relevant rules.
Trusted Friends: the limited cross-age exception
Age-based communication can be inconvenient for families and people who know each other offline. Trusted Friends are Roblox’s controlled exception for some cross-age relationships.
Current rules include the following:
- Age-checked users aged 13 and older can add eligible Trusted Friends.
- Live QR-code scanning and contact importing can help establish a real-world connection.
- Users under 13 generally need parental approval.
- Teens aged 13–17 generally cannot create a Trusted Friend relationship with an adult through ordinary profile searching. A real-life connection method, such as QR scanning or contact importing, is required.
- Availability varies by country and feature rollout.
- Roblox says Trusted Friend conversations are still monitored for critical harm, including grooming.
A linked parent may be automatically upgraded to the child’s Trusted Friend under Roblox’s family rollout when the parent is age-checked, linked to the child’s account, and already connected to the child. That does not mean any adult can add any child as a Trusted Friend.

What Roblox Kids and Roblox Select change for users under 16
Roblox Kids and Roblox Select are age-based account types that affect more than chat. They became globally available on June 16, 2026, but the precise age thresholds, game availability, and features can vary by region during the transition.

Users who have not completed an age check may have limited game access and no communication, particularly under the newer account framework. That is why refusing verification can affect more than the chat window even though Roblox does not describe the check as a universal requirement to play.
Roblox says accounts automatically progress from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select at age 9 and from Roblox Select to a standard Roblox account at age 16. Its account progression guide explains the parental-control implications.
What if you refuse the face scan?
If a player does not want to submit a selfie video, the practical consequences are:

- Chat and other communication features remain unavailable.
- Younger accounts may be placed into a restricted or unverified account experience with a smaller game selection.
- Existing access may change as Roblox completes regional transitions or applies the age-based account system.
Do not assume that refusing the scan leaves every non-chat feature exactly as it was before. Conversely, do not assume that refusing it automatically deletes the account or blocks all gameplay.
A VPN or changing the apparent territory is not a dependable workaround. Roblox has said that switching territories will not evade the age-check requirement; its response to Ofcom is available here. Using a VPN may also cause account, region, or service problems without restoring chat access.
What to do if Roblox estimates the wrong age
A mistaken estimate should not be treated as a permanent lock. Use this order of operations:

- Check the assigned group: Open Settings → Account Info and review the Age Group shown on the account.
- Use ID verification if eligible: Users aged 13 and older can use the government-ID route to correct an incorrect facial estimate.
- Use the linked parent account for a child: A verified parent can correct a child’s birthday through Parental Controls in applicable cases.
- Use the adult reset option: Users aged 18 and older may see a one-time option in Account Settings to redo the age check.
- Contact Roblox Support: If the correction route is missing, fails, or produces an account problem, use Roblox Support rather than repeatedly submitting selfies.
Parent corrections are generally limited to one use, so check that the child’s real date of birth and the account details are correct before confirming. If a parent accidentally completes the child’s check with the parent’s face, use the correction process instead of repeatedly retrying the same selfie.

The age check is therefore not necessarily a permanent one-time event.
If the camera check fails
Roblox does not publish one universal troubleshooting tree for every camera error. The sensible steps are:
- Confirm that the device camera works in another app and that Roblox has permission to use it.
- Restart the process from Settings → Account Info.
- Use the ID route if the user is at least 13 and that option is available.
- Contact Roblox Support if neither route succeeds.
For a child, make sure the child—not the parent—is the person in front of the camera.
What happens to the selfie, video, or ID data?
This is one of the most important distinctions in the policy. Roblox’s explanations for facial age estimation and ID-based identity verification do not use identical retention language.
Facial age estimation
Roblox says that the images and videos used for facial age estimation are deleted after processing and that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from that process.
ID verification
For identity verification, Roblox’s Facial Media Capture Privacy Notice says that Persona processes face geometry from the ID and selfie. Persona may retain biometric data for up to 30 days unless a longer period is legally required. Roblox says it does not receive a copy of or have access to that biometric data.
That means it would be inaccurate to say that all biometric data is immediately deleted. The retention descriptions differ between the facial-age-estimation route and the ID-verification route. Anyone considering ID verification should read the current Roblox Privacy and Cookie Policy and facial-media notice before proceeding.

Roblox reports that Persona’s age-estimation models achieved a 1.4-year mean absolute error for users under 18 in testing by the U.K. Age Check Certification Scheme. Roblox also describes the technology as tested and certified by third-party laboratories.
Those figures describe testing results, not a guarantee that every player will be assigned correctly. Independent reporting has included expert caution about the reliability of facial age estimation, while individual users have publicly reported being placed in the wrong age group. Those reports are examples of user experiences, not a measured platform-wide error rate. The Associated Press coverage discusses some of the broader concerns.
Roblox’s newer behavioral age-assurance system is intended to keep the estimate current rather than rely only on one selfie. Roblox says that system:

These are Roblox-reported figures. They should be understood as claims about the company’s system and data, not independent proof that every age decision is accurate. Roblox’s behavioral age-assurance explanation describes how the ongoing layer may trigger another check when account activity appears inconsistent with the assigned age.
Does age checking stop grooming and unsafe behavior?
No. Age checks reduce reliance on self-reported birthdays and restrict many adult–minor communication paths, but they do not prove that another player is trustworthy, genuine, or known to a child. A person assigned to a similar age group can still lie, manipulate others, or behave dangerously.
Roblox itself says that no safety system is foolproof. Age checks operate alongside filtering, moderation, blocking, reporting, parental controls, and systems such as Roblox Sentinel. Roblox reported that Sentinel helped generate approximately 1,200 potential child-exploitation reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children during the first half of 2025.
Parents should still:
- Link the child’s account to a parent account.
- Review chat, friend, spending, and screen-time settings.
- Teach children not to move suspicious conversations off Roblox.
- Tell children to block and report concerning users.
- Report suspected exploitation rather than attempting to investigate or confront a suspected predator personally.
- Explain that a similar-age label is a safety control, not proof of identity or good intentions.
Practical choices for players and parents
If you want to keep chatting
- Use facial age estimation if you have a working camera and accept the relevant privacy trade-off.
- If you are 13 or older and the estimate is wrong or unsuitable, try government-ID verification.
- For a child, link and verify the parent account before trying to correct the birthday or manage family communication.
- Use Trusted Friends only where the relationship, age, parental approval, and regional availability meet Roblox’s requirements.
If you want to avoid submitting an ID
Facial age estimation is the usual alternative for chat access. If you decline both routes, expect communication to remain unavailable and recognize that a younger or unverified account may also have limited game access.
If family members are in different age groups
Both accounts may need to be age-checked. Depending on the ages and country, the appropriate connection may be a linked parent relationship, parental approval, QR scanning, contact importing, or Trusted Friend status. Do not assume that any two accounts can simply add one another as Trusted Friends.
