Yes— the original Crossy Road is free to download and play. Its endless road-crossing runs, Classic mode, and core character collection are not paywalled. The trade-off is a freemium design: autoplay video ads can appear between runs, optional rewarded ads offer coins and other bonuses, and in-app purchases sell selected mascots, coin boosts, and an Ad Blocker Pack. Classic play works without Wi-Fi, although ads, daily competitions, some leaderboards, and store transactions need an internet connection. This guide covers the original Hipster Whale game (App Store ID 924373886 and Google Play package com.yodo1.crossyroad), not Crossy Road Castle, the discontinued Disney Crossy Road, browser clones, or the separate Apple Arcade game Crossy Road Rush.
Is Crossy Road actually free to play?
Yes. The iOS, Android, and Amazon listings mark the original Crossy Road as free to download, with advertising and optional in-game purchases. You can keep making runs, earn coins, unlock characters, and set local high scores without paying. No subscription, battle pass, or paid energy system is required for the basic game.

“Free” means free-to-play rather than completely monetization-free. Google Play labels the app “Contains ads” and “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items).” The random-item notice refers mainly to the prize machine, which spends earned coins on a random character and can award duplicates. Payment buys convenience or particular premium mascots; it does not unlock the ability to cross the road.

That last row is not a paid mode inside Crossy Road. Crossy Road Rush is a separate Hipster Whale title announced for Apple Arcade, scheduled for 5 November 2026, with solo and up-to-four-player local or online play.

What ads does Crossy Road show?
There are two distinct ad systems. Autoplay, or interstitial, video ads can appear at run transitions; these are the “forced ads” players usually mean. Rewarded videos are voluntary and can offer a coin banner, gift, score doubler, character re-roll, or a Pecking Order token. A November 2024 manual review by Pixalate described transition ads and optional videos for extra coins and prizes, primarily promoting other mixed-audience games.
Ads need an internet connection. If the ad network has reached its daily fill limit, rewarded videos may temporarily disappear; Hipster Whale’s support guidance says to wait 24 hours. An inappropriate advert can be reported to [email protected] with the device platform. Android system-level ad blockers can also stop the game launching properly because the developer says the app expects its optional ad system to function.

How do I remove ads in Crossy Road?
You have two official purchase paths, with different results. The support explanation is published in Hipster Whale’s Crossy Road Support FAQ.
Buy any regular character to stop autoplay ads
Purchasing one ordinary character removes autoplay ads permanently. Rewarded offers still exist, so you can choose to watch a video for coins, gifts, doublers, or re-rolls. This is the least expensive paid route when the goal is simply to stop interruptions between runs.
Buy the Ad Blocker Pack for a completely ad-free game
The Ad Blocker Pack removes every ad forever, including rewarded placements. Hipster Whale states that coin banners, gifts, doublers, character re-rolls, and future reward placements are still awarded without watching a video. The pack also unlocks Ad Fighter and Ad Buster, which are not prize-machine characters. Store prices are regional and can change: a July 2026 community listing reported US$7.99 on iPhone and US$8.49 on Android, while a 2025 Google Play review referred to roughly nine dollars.

What in-app purchases are available?
Purchases fall into several categories. Prices below are examples visible in the US iPhone listing or clearly attributed community listings, checked October 2026; your currency, tax, platform, and event availability can differ.

The App Store also shows US$0.00 entries such as PAC-MAN and Shooty Cat, consistent with promotional or event unlocks rather than a general paid price. A Russian App Store note dated 24 October 2026 listed character purchases at 99.00 ₽ and no auto-renewing subscription. Some iPhone purchases may be shareable through Apple Family Sharing, but that does not replace restoring purchases on a new personal device.
How does the prize machine work, and can I unlock characters without paying?
Most of the more than 300 characters are obtainable without an IAP. Earn yellow coins from runs, daily rewards, and optional rewarded offers, then spend 100 coins per prize-machine spin. Every remaining machine character can be selected, including characters you already own, so duplicates are normal and become more likely as your collection fills. Hipster Whale says the machine’s algorithm eventually awards a new figurine, but it is not a buy-what-you-want shop.

- Play Classic runs and collect coins; staying offline is possible, but you will not receive rewarded-ad income.
- Claim daily rewards and play the daily Pecking Order competition when connected if you want its token-based character progress.
- Open the prize machine and spend 100 coins per spin.
- Use secret-character clues and seasonal events for unlocks that do not come from the machine.
Some mascots remain purchase-only, including the Piggy Bank. Restore Purchases restores paid IAPs, not characters won from prize-machine spins.
Can I play Crossy Road offline or with no Wi-Fi?
Yes. The official store copy says “Play offline games,” and Classic endless runs work without a connection. Already-unlocked characters, local high scores, and same-device multiplayer remain usable. Internet-dependent functions simply disappear until you reconnect.

Offline play therefore changes the economy: you avoid autoplay ads but also lose rewarded-ad coin income and online daily activities. It is useful on a plane or in a weak-signal area, not a way to make every reward available without a connection.
Which devices support the original game?
- iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and iMessage: The live App Store listing requires iOS/iPadOS 15.0 or later and lists a 281.7 MB download. The older support FAQ’s iOS 13 statement is not the current installation requirement.
- Android: Google Play showed an update on 28 October 2026 and a 100M+ download tier. Hipster Whale’s historical minimum is Android 5.1 (API 22) with OpenGL ES 3 or Vulkan; the live store’s compatibility check is the authority for a new installation.
- Amazon Fire: The FAQ cites FireOS 5.0+ with OpenGL ES 3 or Vulkan. The Amazon listing supports game controllers and the Fire TV Voice Remote.
Supported interface languages listed by the FAQ include English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic; the App Store also lists Indonesian.

Ratings differ by storefront. The App Store rates it 9+ for infrequent cartoon or fantasy violence and flags advertising and in-app purchases. Google Play lists Everyone, Comic Mischief, and purchases that include random items; European Play listings have also shown PEGI 3.
Hipster Whale’s privacy policy, dated 9 August 2023, says the games are not aimed at children under 13 while acknowledging that they may appeal to children. Users who enter an age under 13 do not receive targeted advertising, and the policy says personally identifiable information is not collected from them. The game still permits play with modified data collection.
Parents can open Classic mode settings and disable the daily level, keeping a child off the online Pecking Order leaderboard. Buying the Ad Blocker Pack removes ad presentation while preserving the associated rewards. The random prize machine is the key spending consideration: a 100-coin spin can produce a duplicate.

How current and popular is Crossy Road?
Google Play reported 100M+ downloads and an average 4.6 rating from 3.72 million reviews in 2026; its header also surfaced 4.57 million reviews. The App Store showed 4.7 out of 5 from 740,000 ratings. Hipster Whale’s store copy claims 250 million players worldwide, a developer marketing figure rather than an independently audited count. Store listings describe more than 300 characters and more than 28 worlds. Google Play listed the latest update as 28 October 2026, while the App Store showed version 7.14.2 around the same period.
For historical context, Hipster Whale’s GDC 2015 talk reported 10 million downloads in the first month and about US$600,000 in App Store revenue during the first few weeks, including a US$60,000 peak day. Those launch-era figures explain the original ads-plus-one-dollar-character model; they are not current revenue or player metrics.
What happens when I change devices or request a refund?
On iOS, Apple ID/iCloud saves and the in-game Settings > Support > Restore Purchases path can recover paid items; the FAQ notes that playing several games, sometimes up to 12, may be needed before a save appears. On Android, Google Play restores purchases and Play Games can sync progress, but coins do not sync through Play Games. For a coin discrepancy, Hipster Whale asks players to email [email protected] with a screenshot of the coin count.
Progress and purchases do not transfer between iOS, Android, and Amazon ecosystems. Hipster Whale cannot issue an iOS refund; contact Apple. For Google Play purchases, use in-game Settings support and include the GPA number or the Gmail address used for the transaction.
What is the bottom line for a new player?
Start free if you want an offline-friendly arcade game and do not mind occasional interruptions. Buy a regular character when autoplay ads are the only annoyance; choose the Ad Blocker Pack when you want rewarded offers removed as well and still want their rewards credited. The prize machine, secrets, events, and Classic mode provide a complete no-spend path, but random duplicates and slower coin income are part of that choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Crossy Road purchases expire or renew automatically?
No. Character purchases, the Piggy Bank, and the Ad Blocker Pack are one-time transactions in the original game. A Russian App Store listing checked on 24 October 2026 specifically showed no subscription or auto-renewal.
Why did the prize machine give me a character I already own?
Duplicates are built into the machine rather than evidence of a failed purchase. Each 100-coin spin can select any machine character, including one already in your collection; the collection algorithm eventually awards a new figurine.
Can I move my Crossy Road coins from Android to an iPhone?
No. Saves do not transfer between iOS, Android, and Amazon ecosystems. Android Play Games synchronization also excludes coin balances, so contact support with a screenshot if a balance is missing on the same platform.
Why are rewarded videos unavailable even though I am online?
The ad network may have reached its daily limit, or the connection may not be suitable for video. Hipster Whale’s support guidance recommends waiting 24 hours; offline mode, parental settings, and ad-blocking software can also prevent an offer from appearing.
Does Crossy Road Rush replace the original Crossy Road?
No. Rush is a separate Apple Arcade release announced for 5 November 2026. Its no-ad, no-IAP model comes from Apple Arcade and does not change the monetization or offline feature set of the original free-to-play app.
