Cruelty Squad is a single-player tactical first-person shooter built around open-ended missions, flexible routes and loadouts, and an intentionally abrasive presentation. You take corporate liquidation jobs, choose how to approach their objectives, and can replay missions to improve your results. Its grotesque visuals and interface are part of the experience, not a conventional polish-forward design.
What is Cruelty Squad?
Developed and published by Consumer Softproducts, Cruelty Squad left Early Access on June 15, 2021, after its Early Access launch on January 4, 2021. Steam classifies it as Action, Indie, and Simulation. The store describes it as a tactical first-person shooter set in the “hardcore gig economy of corporate liquidations”—a deliberately bleak premise for a game about taking corporate jobs and carrying them out.

It is a single-player game, and its missions are not simply linear corridors leading from one firefight to the next. The official listing emphasizes open objectives, multiple routes, equipment planning, exploration, and replay. Its promotional copy says, “All of the missions have multiple viable approaches and routes. Plan out your equipment loadout to gain a tactical advantage. Choose between non-lethal and lethal options.” Steam store page · Steam release information

Choose a route and prepare a loadout
Missions let you decide how to reach and handle objectives. You can scout for alternate routes, select equipment to suit your approach, and search the environment for hidden equipment and levels. The store’s “No handholding!” tagline reflects its advertised lack of guided, step-by-step direction; it is promotional language, not an independent judgment about difficulty.

Fight, avoid, or use non-lethal options
The listing describes varied weapons and both lethal and non-lethal choices. That supports a range of approaches, but does not establish that every mission or encounter can be completed without violence. Treat non-lethal play as an available option, not a guarantee of a fully pacifist route through the entire game.
Replay and pursue better results
After a mission, you can return to improve your time and earn higher ranks, including S-ranks. The game also advertises conversations with NPCs, unusual death mechanics, and simulations involving stocks and organs. Those systems broaden the game beyond straightforward shooting; the store listing does not specify enough detail to reduce them to a single strategy or progression formula.

Why does Cruelty Squad look so abrasive?
The game uses clashing colors and textures, mixes visual styles, and presents text and interface elements in unconventional ways. The result is intentionally confrontational rather than a restrained or realistic military-shooter look. If you value visual clarity and a consistent interface above all else, that design may be a substantial obstacle; if you are curious about deliberately ugly, disorienting presentation, it is central to the game’s identity.
Academic author Sára Bogárka Ganszky analyzes Cruelty Squad as an example of anti-design and reads its corporate setting, gig-economy premise, and stock-market mechanic as satire of corporate greed and capitalism. That is a critical interpretation, not a definitive meaning stated by the product listing. The listing establishes the setting and mechanics; Ganszky’s thesis supplies the interpretive framework. What content and PC compatibility caveats should you know?
The developer’s Steam content note identifies low-polygon violence, decapitation, dismemberment, drug use, profanity, and nudity. The listing also says the game is not recommended for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Read the official store page if these warnings are relevant to your decision.
Steam lists these minimum PC requirements:
- Operating system: Windows 7
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700HQ at 2.8 GHz
- Memory: 2 GB RAM
- Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050
- Storage: 1 GB available space
There is an important distinction between the game’s listed minimum OS and the platform’s current client policy: Steam says its client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. The game listing’s Windows 7 minimum therefore does not mean the current Steam client is supported on Windows 7. Game requirements · Steam client system requirements

Who is Cruelty Squad for?
It is a better fit for players interested in open-ended tactical missions, experimentation with routes and equipment, hidden discoveries, replayable ranks, and a distinctive anti-design aesthetic. Its premise and systems also invite a satirical reading of corporate work and markets, though that interpretation comes from critical analysis rather than a stated developer explanation.
It may be a poor fit if photosensitive visual effects are a concern, or if the listed content warnings are deal-breakers. The highly abrasive visuals and interface are also a taste question rather than a conventional quality benchmark: the game makes them prominent, so a preference for clean, consistent presentation is worth weighing before buying.
