“A current driver on your PC may be better than the driver we’re trying to install” usually means Windows Update has selected a package that Windows ranks as a worse match than the driver already installed. It is normally a driver-selection conflict, not evidence of malware and not proof that your hardware needs replacing. If the device works, keep the installed driver in place while you identify the device, compare the two packages, and decide whether the offered update addresses a real problem.
The safest order is to check Windows Update’s Optional updates page, compare the listing with Device Manager, and use only Windows Update, Device Manager, or the computer/component manufacturer’s official support page. Do not force an older package merely to remove the notification.

What does “a current driver on your PC may be better” mean?
Windows uses drivers as the translation layer between the operating system and hardware such as graphics adapters, network devices, audio chips, storage controllers, printers, and game controllers. Microsoft says Windows can automatically download recommended drivers for connected hardware through Windows Update. When Windows Update offers another package, Windows evaluates factors such as the device match, provider, compatibility information, and package ranking—not just the visible version number.
The warning appears when the package Windows Update is trying to apply is ranked below the driver already installed. Windows may continue retrying because the update remains available in its catalog even though the local driver is considered a better choice. The message therefore describes a conflict between two driver packages, not a diagnosis that either the PC or the device is damaged.

What the warning does not prove
- It does not prove that the offered package is infected or that Windows Update is malicious.
- It does not prove that the installed driver is universally newer; it may simply be a better match for this hardware, Windows edition, or computer model.
- It does not mean you must replace the device.
- It does not mean a higher-looking version number is automatically preferable.
If the device is functioning normally, the least risky response is to leave the working driver installed and investigate before changing anything.
Why does Windows keep trying to install an older driver?
Repeated attempts usually happen because Windows Update still sees an applicable package while the locally installed package wins the driver-ranking decision. Several details can create that situation.
Optional driver updates are separate from normal updates
Windows 10 and Windows 11 present optional driver updates separately. Microsoft says optional drivers are not installed automatically; you select them yourself. A package listed under Optional updates can therefore remain available even when Windows has not accepted it as the best replacement for the installed driver.
Driver providers use different versioning schemes
Most drivers are produced by hardware or computer manufacturers and certified for Windows. Providers do not all number packages in the same way, and a version with a larger number is not automatically the correct replacement. An OEM-customized package can be preferable to a generic package with a different numbering sequence because it may contain settings or compatibility information for a particular model.
A real-world example is not a universal diagnosis
A Microsoft Q&A participant reported Windows Update repeatedly offering Intel display driver 26.20.100.7463 while Device Manager showed 27.20.100.8280. That report demonstrates how an apparently older package can be offered, but it does not establish that every occurrence of this warning involves Intel graphics or those versions.
How do I find which driver failed or is being offered?
The Windows Update banner may not name the device. Use Optional updates and Device Manager together so you can match the publisher, device class, version, and date.
- Open the optional-update list. In Windows, go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Record every driver entry that appears, including its publisher, device category, version, and date. Do not select Install yet if you are only investigating.
- Check update history. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and look for failed or repeatedly attempted driver entries. The history can help distinguish a one-time attempt from a package Windows keeps offering.
- Open Device Manager. Search for and open Device Manager, expand the category that matches the optional-update listing, and identify the device.
- Compare the installed package. Right-click the device, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab. Record Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
- Check for an unknown-device clue. If no category is obvious, look for a device with a warning icon. In its Properties dialog, the Details tab can expose a hardware ID that you can give to the computer or component manufacturer. Treat the hardware ID as identification information, not as a reason to download a package from an unverified site.
Keep the offered and installed details side by side. A match by device class alone is not enough: the provider, model, Windows edition, architecture, and package date also matter.

Should I install the optional driver update?
Install it only when it clearly matches the device and solves a defined problem or supplies a compatibility fix you need. If the device works and the offered package appears older, generic, or intended for a different model, keeping the installed package is the safer choice.
| Situation | Preferred action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The device works and the listing is only an optional update | Leave the installed driver in place while you verify the package | Optional drivers are user-selected, and forcing a downgrade can replace a compatible driver with a worse match |
| The optional listing exactly matches the device and addresses a known issue | Install from Windows Update after recording the current provider, version, and date | The package is going through Microsoft’s normal delivery channel and can be evaluated against a specific need |
| Device Manager reports a problem or the device has stopped working | Use automatic search, the manufacturer’s official package, reinstall, or rollback as appropriate | A malfunction changes the priority from avoiding change to restoring a working driver |
| The package is for a different model, architecture, or Windows edition | Do not install it | A superficially similar driver can be incompatible even when its version number looks newer |
| You found the package on a third-party driver-download site | Do not use that source | Microsoft advises downloading drivers from Windows Update or the manufacturer’s official website |
What is the safest way to update the driver?
Use the least forceful supported path first. The correct option depends on whether the device works, whether the package is clearly identified, and whether you need to recover from a recent failure.
Option 1: Check Windows Update first
Windows Update is Microsoft’s normal channel for certified driver delivery. Reopen Settings > Windows Update, install ordinary updates if offered, then inspect Advanced options > Optional updates. Select a driver only after confirming that its device, provider, and version correspond to the hardware you intend to change. Restart when Windows requests it, then test the device rather than assuming installation success from the update screen alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Option 2: Let Device Manager search automatically
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Allow Windows to report whether a better driver is found, then restart if prompted.
This method uses Windows’ own matching process. It may report that the best driver is already installed; that result is consistent with the warning and is not a failure.
Option 3: Use the exact manufacturer package
When Windows Update does not have the right package, go to the official support page for the computer or component manufacturer. Select the exact PC or component model, Windows version, and system architecture before downloading. Microsoft specifically advises avoiding driver-download websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.
Prefer the computer maker’s package when the device is built into a laptop or desktop, because the OEM may have customized the driver for that model. For an add-in component, use the component maker’s official support page when it provides a package explicitly matching the hardware and Windows release.

Option 4: Reinstall a corrupted driver
Reinstallation is appropriate when the device is malfunctioning or the current installation appears corrupted, not simply because the warning is annoying.
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal using the dialog Windows displays. Do not select an option to remove driver software unless you understand that you may need a replacement package immediately.
- Restart the PC. Microsoft documents restarting so Windows can attempt to reinstall the driver.
- Check Device Manager and test the hardware. If Windows does not restore a working driver, use the exact official manufacturer package.
Option 5: Roll back a recent change
If the device began failing after a recent driver update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Administrator permissions may be required. Windows does not offer rollback for every package, so the absence of the button is not evidence that the hardware is defective; it means that Windows has no eligible previous driver recorded through that interface.
How should I handle the warning when the device still works?
Do not uninstall a functioning driver solely to make the notification disappear. Record the package details, restart once, and monitor whether the device behaves normally. A working driver that Windows ranks as the better match is preferable to a forced downgrade.
- Capture the device name and category from Device Manager.
- Record the installed provider, version, and date.
- Record the offered provider, version, and date from Optional updates.
- Note your Windows edition, version, build, and system architecture.
- Write down whether the device has any symptoms: crashes, missing output, connection drops, poor performance, or no visible problem.
This record lets the manufacturer distinguish a harmless superseded package from a genuine compatibility issue. Microsoft’s guidance directs users to the driver provider for update information when Windows’ own channels do not resolve the mismatch.
What if Windows keeps retrying the same package?
First verify that the device still works and that the package is truly the same one. Windows Update may show a repeated attempt in history even after a restart, or it may offer a revised package with a similar description. Compare the full provider, version, date, and device details rather than relying on the short banner text.

If the device works normally
Leave the installed driver in place and avoid forcing the offered package. Keep your records and check later whether Windows replaces the listing with a package that matches the installed provider or the computer manufacturer’s current release.
If the device is malfunctioning
Use Device Manager’s automatic search, the exact official manufacturer package, reinstall, or rollback according to the failure’s timing. Test after each change so you know which action altered the behavior.

About hiding tools and cache-clearing advice
Older community answers often recommend Microsoft’s Show or Hide Updates troubleshooter or clearing Windows Update caches. Current official guidance does not establish that the legacy hiding tool remains supported on every current Windows 10 and Windows 11 release, so it should not be presented as a guaranteed fix. Cache-clearing instructions can also remove useful update history and introduce a separate problem; use them only with current, device-specific support from Microsoft or the OEM.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the Windows version change the advice?
Yes. Record the exact edition and build before following version-specific instructions. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC can still display driver entries, but the support and compatibility context differs from a supported Windows 11 installation, and a package intended for one release may not be appropriate for another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not infer compatibility from “Windows” alone. Check whether the package names Windows 10 or Windows 11, the required architecture, and the exact model or hardware family. If the manufacturer has stopped publishing packages for your Windows release, ask the manufacturer what configuration it supports instead of substituting a similarly named driver.
Which driver path has the lowest risk?
Compare the available paths by authority, device specificity, reversibility, and the damage a wrong choice could cause.
| Path | Authority | Device specificity | Reversibility | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leave the installed driver | Existing provider and Windows ranking | Already matched to the device | Highest; no change is made | The unresolved offer may continue appearing |
| Windows Update optional package | Microsoft delivery channel | Depends on the catalog match | Moderate; rollback may be available | An optional package may be a worse match for this model |
| Device Manager automatic search | Windows matching service | Determined automatically | Moderate | It may not find the OEM-specific package you need |
| Official manufacturer package | Computer or component provider | Highest when the exact model and Windows release are selected | Moderate; retain the previous package details | Choosing the wrong model or edition can cause incompatibility |
| Forced downgrade or third-party download | Not established as the supported path | Uncertain | Lowest | You can remove a working or compatible driver and make recovery harder |
When should I contact the manufacturer?
Contact the computer or component manufacturer when the exact package continues to be offered despite a working, better-ranked driver; when Device Manager shows an error after an update; or when the device is unidentified. Provide the device name, hardware ID if available, installed and offered provider/version/date, Windows edition and build, and a description of the symptom. This information is more useful than reporting only the sentence displayed by Windows Update.
Ask the provider which package is supported for your exact model and Windows release. Do not accept a generic “latest driver” recommendation without confirming that model and operating-system match.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can this warning damage my PC if I leave it alone?
The warning itself is a status message; it does not apply a new driver merely because it is displayed. If the device works, leaving the installed package in place avoids the risk of replacing it with a worse match. Continue to watch for actual symptoms rather than treating the notification as hardware damage.
Does Windows Update being unable to install this driver mean Windows Update is broken?
Not necessarily. Windows Update can correctly determine that the locally installed package ranks better for the device while still retaining the catalog offer. A broader update failure—such as unrelated updates failing or the update service reporting an error code—would be a separate problem.
Will rolling back a driver remove my files or games?
A rollback changes the device driver used by Windows; it is not a reset of personal files, applications, or game saves. You should still close affected programs and expect the device to disconnect briefly while Windows switches packages.
Why can two PCs with the same hardware receive different driver choices?
Driver ranking also considers the computer model, Windows edition and build, provider customizations, and compatibility metadata. Two systems with similarly named components can therefore receive different packages, especially when one uses an OEM-customized driver.
Is an optional driver update required for security?
The “optional” label means Windows does not install that driver automatically; it is a user-selected update category. The label alone does not tell you whether the package fixes a security issue, improves stability, or is unnecessary for your configuration, so check the provider’s release information for your exact model before deciding.
