Yes. CD PROJEKT RED is developing a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, now referred to by the publisher as Cyberpunk 2. The catch is that the latest explicit status update, from January 2026, puts it in pre-production, with hiring and team-building still underway. An October 2026 podcast discussed the game’s creative process but offered no release-date or gameplay reveal.
Is Cyberpunk 2 officially in development?
Yes. CD PROJEKT announced on May 28, 2025, that the project had completed its conceptual phase and advanced to pre-production. The announcement identifies Cyberpunk 2 as the follow-up previously known by its codename, Project Orion. CD PROJEKT’s May 2025 announcement is the clearest confirmation that the sequel is real and moving through development.
The project’s earlier public history helps put that update in context. On February 6, 2024, CD PROJEKT RED described Project Orion as the anticipated follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077 and said it was in early development at CD PROJEKT RED North America, with a Boston team and hiring in Boston and Vancouver. The studio’s 2024 announcement used the codename that the publisher later connected directly to Cyberpunk 2.
What is the catch?
“In development” does not mean the game is close to release. In a January 15, 2026 interview, Engineering Director Jess Scott said: “Since we are in pre-production, we need to hire a lot of Engineers, and we need to structure the teams for success.” Her comments describe hiring and team formation, as well as engineering work needed for the project; they are not a public feature list. That makes pre-production the most recent explicit development-stage confirmation in the official material reviewed. The October 2026 podcast is newer, but it does not announce that the game has moved into a later phase.
When will Cyberpunk 2 come out?
No confirmed release date or release window is given in the official sources reviewed. The October 1, 2026 episode of CD PROJEKT RED’s AnsweRED podcast features VP and Game Director Gabe Amatangelo and Creative Director Igor Sarzyński discussing creative vision and how teams work together. Its introduction cautions listeners not to expect many Cyberpunk 2 spoilers, and it does not provide a launch timetable. Listen to AnsweRED Podcast Episode 33.

Amatangelo describes his role in the episode transcript: “I’m the Game Director on Cyberpunk 2077 after launch and Phantom Liberty, and now Cyberpunk 2.” That confirms his involvement, not a release date or a public reveal of sequel gameplay.

CD PROJEKT also reported that it invested more than 513 million PLN in future releases during 2025, focused mainly on The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2. This is company-wide spending on future releases, not a disclosed budget for Cyberpunk 2 alone. The company separately reported almost 70 million PLN in Cyberpunk 2077 tie-in product revenue for 2025; that figure concerns franchise merchandise activity, not sequel development spending. CD PROJEKT’s investor results provide the company-reported figures.

What to play while you wait
If you want to return to Night City, the available game is still Cyberpunk 2077, not its unreleased sequel. CD PROJEKT confirms that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. Check that any edition you buy matches your platform and whether you want a physical or digital copy; the publisher’s announcement confirms the Switch 2 launch, not current retailer stock or availability elsewhere.
