Cyberpunk 2077 FAQ: Do You Need to Play the Game Before Watching Edgerunners?

No. You can follow and enjoy Cyberpunk: Edgerunners without playing Cyberpunk 2077. Netflix and CD PROJEKT RED describe the anime as a standalone, 10-episode story in the game’s universe. Playing the game beforehand is optional context: it can make Night City’s locations, cyberware, corporations, gangs and slang more familiar, but the anime introduces the people, rules and conflicts its own story requires.

What the official descriptions actually promise

Netflix’s Media Center describes Edgerunners as “a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City,” a future city obsessed with technology and body modification. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2020 announcement uses the same key framing: an all-new original anime series set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077, again identified as a standalone 10-episode story. The company’s official Cyberpunk page also labels it a standalone Netflix anime created with Studio Trigger.

“Standalone” has a practical meaning for a first-time viewer. The series establishes its own protagonist, supporting cast, stakes, terminology and timeline as episodes unfold. You are not expected to know the game’s protagonist, missions, skill trees or ending choices in order to understand what is happening on screen.

It is an original story, not a retelling of the game campaign

The anime and game occupy the same fictional setting, but the official descriptions present Edgerunners as an original story rather than a filmed version of the game’s campaign. That distinction explains why the series can welcome viewers who have never installed the game: its narrative has a separate cast and a complete dramatic arc.

What “same universe” means for newcomers

Shared continuity gives the anime a common vocabulary with the game. Night City, its technology, social divisions and powerful organizations feel recognizable across both works. The connection is useful for atmosphere and discovery, not a prerequisite lesson. When a concept matters to an episode’s plot, the show supplies enough context through dialogue, action or visual storytelling.

What playing Cyberpunk 2077 adds

Starting with the game can turn background details into recognitions. A player may identify a district layout, a familiar building, a brand or corporation, a gang style, a piece of cyberware, or a phrase of Night City slang. Visual motifs that read as striking science-fiction design to a new viewer can carry additional associations for someone who has explored the game.

Locations become more legible

The game lets you move through Night City at your own pace. That interactive familiarity can make the anime’s streets, markets, highways and corporate spaces easier to place mentally. You may notice how a location’s social class, security level or architecture changes from one scene to another because you have previously navigated similar spaces yourself.

Cyberware and technology have more texture

Both works imagine bodies modified with replaceable hardware and software. Game experience gives you a working sense of why a character might pursue an implant, what risks excessive modification suggests, and how technological advantage affects combat or status. The anime still communicates the relevant stakes in its own scenes; the game mainly supplies a larger catalogue of examples.

Factions and slang carry extra associations

Players encounter corporations, gangs and street terminology repeatedly during the game. Recognizing those names in Edgerunners can make a brief reference feel like a callback to a wider social system. If you have no prior exposure, the names function as part of the series’ world-building and do not prevent you from tracking the characters’ goals.

References become easter eggs rather than homework

The strongest benefit of playing first is enrichment. You may catch visual echoes, recurring terminology or setting details that another viewer simply accepts as part of the background. Those discoveries reward familiarity, but they are not tests the anime expects you to pass.

Which order should you choose?

Order What you gain Trade-off Best for
Watch Edgerunners first An independent introduction to Night City and the anime’s characters; every required premise arrives in the series. Some game-related references may register only as atmosphere until you encounter the setting elsewhere. Viewers who want the cleanest first experience of the anime or who are deciding whether the game interests them.
Play Cyberpunk 2077 first More familiarity with districts, technology, factions, visual language and terminology. The game is a much larger interactive commitment before you reach the 10-episode series. Players who prefer learning a world by exploring it and making choices inside it.
Watch, then play The anime provides an emotional and concise entry point; the game offers a longer, interactive return to the same universe. Connections you notice later may invite comparisons that are not part of the anime’s own plot. Most newcomers who want both stories without treating the game as preparation.

Why watching first is a strong default

The series is finite and self-contained, so it gives you a complete introduction in 10 episodes. You can then decide whether you want an interactive visit to Night City. This order also keeps the anime’s pacing intact: you meet its characters when the show chooses to reveal them, rather than pausing the story to learn a game system first.

When playing first makes sense

Choose the game first if your preferred way to learn fiction is exploration. Walking through districts, reading in-world material and making decisions can make the setting feel familiar before the anime begins. This is a preference-based choice, not an official requirement. CD PROJEKT RED’s standalone wording does not establish a first-play condition.

Will either one spoil the other?

There is no universal spoiler rule established by the official descriptions. The anime is set in the game’s universe and can include recognizable places, technologies and references, but those connections are not the same as revealing every major turn of the game’s campaign. Conversely, playing the game first may give you broad setting knowledge without telling you how the anime’s separate characters’ story ends.

If you want to minimize even incidental cross-references, watch the anime before reading detailed game wikis or seeking explanations of shared characters and locations. If you are comfortable with setting-level knowledge and value recognition, either order works. Avoid assuming that a cameo, a familiar location or a piece of terminology automatically gives away a major plot event; the official materials do not make that blanket claim.

How much time and money does each starting point require?

The anime’s initial commitment is clear: 10 episodes. The game is a large role-playing game with an interactive world, so completing or even extensively exploring it requires substantially more time than beginning the series. The exact hours depend on how much optional content you pursue, and no single completion figure is necessary to answer the order question.

You do not need to buy the game, downloadable content, a guide or a companion book to understand the anime. Watching the series first lets you make a later purchase decision based on whether you want exploration and player choice, rather than buying it as required background reading.

A practical newcomer path

  1. Start the 10-episode anime. Treat its opening episodes as your introduction to Night City. Pay attention to the characters’ relationships, the rules governing cyberware and the social pressures that shape their decisions.
  2. Record only questions that interest you. If a corporation, gang, district or technology catches your attention, note it without interrupting the story to research a game explanation. The show is designed to move forward without that detour.
  3. Decide what kind of follow-up you want. Choose the game if you want to explore Night City directly, make dialogue and combat choices, and spend more time with the setting. Choose a tabletop product if collaborative, rules-based storytelling appeals to you.
  4. Play the game after the series if you want context in layers. You will recognize broad world elements while still encountering the game on its own terms. Do not expect it to continue the anime’s exact plot or replace its cast with game characters.
  5. Use reference material selectively. Explanations of shared locations or terminology can enhance a second viewing, but they are optional enrichment rather than required preparation.

What about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2?

Netflix Tudum and CD PROJEKT RED describe Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 as another standalone story in the Cyberpunk 2077 world, with a new cast of characters. Its current official positioning likewise does not state that viewers must play the game first. The announced plan lists an October 20 premiere on Netflix; because release dates and regional availability can change, check Netflix and CD PROJEKT RED’s current listings when you are ready to watch.

The sequel’s “new cast” wording matters for expectations. Familiarity with the first anime or the game may add world context, but the stated format is not a requirement to complete either one before starting the new story.

Optional follow-up: the Edgerunners Mission Kit

If you want more lore through play rather than another digital game, the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Mission Kit is a physical tabletop follow-up. Its product description lists an Edgerunners Handbook, a rule book, the full-length mission “The Jacket,” pre-generated Edgerunners, maps, standees, tokens and themed dice.

The kit is an expansion for tabletop role-playing in the setting. It can help a group build its own stories and examine the world from a different angle, but it is not viewing homework. Someone who has only watched the anime can approach it as an optional game product; someone who has played Cyberpunk 2077 may appreciate additional setting texture.

Answers to the questions new viewers usually ask

Can I understand the anime if I have never played the game?

Yes. The official descriptions explicitly frame the anime as a standalone 10-episode story, and its own characters and conflicts provide the necessary narrative context.

Is Edgerunners a direct adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077?

No. It is presented as an all-new original anime set in the same universe, with a separate cast and story rather than a retelling of the game’s campaign.

Should I watch before or after playing?

Either order is valid. Watch first for a concise, self-contained introduction; play first if interactive exploration is how you prefer to learn a setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does playing first improve comprehension?

It can improve recognition of locations, cyberware concepts, corporations, gangs, slang and visual motifs. It does not supply a missing prerequisite for following the anime’s plot.

Is the game required before Edgerunners 2?

The current official positioning describes the sequel as a standalone story with a new cast and does not list prior game play as a prerequisite. Verify the premiere date and availability because those details are subject to change.

Is the Mission Kit necessary to understand either anime?

No. It is an optional tabletop product containing rules, a full-length mission and play materials for groups that want to create stories in the setting.
