For ordinary gameplay or control changes, use Settings in Cyberpunk 2077 first. On Windows, the user settings file is %userprofile%AppDataLocalCD Projekt RedCyberpunk 2077UserSettings.json, but CD PROJEKT RED documents it for control troubleshooting—not as a complete guide to editing every graphics, field-of-view, or resolution option. If by “custom config” you mean adding features, that is a separate PC modding process.
Change a setting through the game first
For a setting the game exposes, change it in the in-game settings menu rather than editing a file. If you are troubleshooting controls, CD PROJEKT RED Technical Support specifically advises checking your key bindings and control scheme there before reporting an issue. Settings can also be restored to their defaults. Read CD PROJEKT RED’s control troubleshooting steps.
Find UserSettings.json on Windows
The official Windows location is %userprofile%AppDataLocalCD Projekt RedCyberpunk 2077UserSettings.json. You can paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar; %userprofile% resolves to your Windows user folder.
This file is identified by CD PROJEKT RED in the context of control issues. Its support page does not provide a general manual-editing procedure or verified key/value instructions for custom graphics, FOV, or resolution changes. Back up the file before making any manual change, and avoid guessing at values or syntax. If the option exists in the game’s menu, use that instead.

If you mean mods, use the PC modding workflow
A mod changes or adds game behavior; it is not simply another name for the user settings file. CD PROJEKT RED describes REDmod as a free DLC that adds integrated mod installation and loading as well as modding tools. It is a PC modding toolchain, not a general-purpose editor for every configuration setting. See CD PROJEKT RED’s REDmod information.
Know which mod format you are installing
- REDmod-compatible mods: These use the game’s
modsfolder and can be enabled through supported launchers. - Older archive-folder mods: These use a different location and management approach. CD PROJEKT RED says older archive-folder mods continue to be supported; do not assume they follow the REDmod folder workflow. CD PROJEKT RED’s modding support page explains the distinction.
Follow instructions for your PC launcher
Mod-enabling steps differ across GOG, Steam, and Epic. Use the instructions for the launcher where your PC copy is installed rather than applying one launcher’s steps to another. The community REDmod usage guide provides launcher-specific setup context. CD PROJEKT RED’s Patch 1.6 REDmod notes describe changes for PC; they are not instructions for editing a console config. Reduce the risk of a broken mod setup
Check that a mod supports your installed game version, the relevant mod format, and any required dependencies before installing it. Community modding documentation warns that core mods interacting with the game executable can break after CD PROJEKT RED updates the game. It recommends a mod manager for most users and cautions that manual installation is error-prone. Consult the community REDmod documentation and the individual mod’s instructions.
If a change causes problems, remove or disable the mod using its documented method, then check whether the game works without it. Do not delete or overwrite files unless you know they belong to that mod; a backup makes it easier to restore a manual file change. Compatibility can change with game updates, so confirm version support again after a patch.
