The route is optional: finishing the jobs without choosing the romance prompts does not make the relationship official.
River Ward romance requirements
The guides consulted say River’s romance is available when V has a female body type. You can still play his quests without pursuing a relationship, but completing the quest chain alone is not enough: you need to communicate romantic interest and accept the relationship prompts.
Quest names and dialogue wording may vary slightly by localization or game version. Follow the intent of the choices below and use the on-screen romance prompt when it appears.
Start River’s questline with I Fought the Law
After completing Life During Wartime, proceed to the side job I Fought the Law. It introduces River and starts his side-story arc. The choices in this investigation are not reported to affect the romance, so focus on completing the job; there is no hidden romance response to find here.

Rescue Randy and show interest during The Hunt
After I Fought the Law, River will contact V and ask for help finding his nephew, Randy. The call may take some in-game time to arrive, so continue playing or waiting until River reaches out, then accept the job.
- Support River during the investigation. When the car-ride conversation offers it, choose “Sign me up for that beer” to signal interest. After Randy is rescued, choose dialogue that continues to show romantic interest.
- Follow the braindance clues to Randy’s location. If you need to select a farm and the clues have not led you to the right one, choose Edgewood.
- Complete the rescue. Do not leave without rescuing Randy. The consulted walkthroughs warn that choosing the wrong farm or failing to rescue him prevents the next quest and ends the romance route.
Make the relationship official in Following the River
Once The Hunt is complete, wait for River to contact V again and accept his invitation to Following the River. At the water tower, choose to kiss him when prompted. In the follow-up conversation the next morning, choose the response that says you like being with him or want a relationship. That confirmation is what makes the romance official.

The AR game is optional
During the visit, River plays an AR game with the kids. Letting them win earns a positive reaction from him, but the quest continues if you win instead. Treat it as a rapport-friendly choice, not a romance requirement.

Which choices matter—and which do not?
- Progression-critical: rescue Randy in The Hunt, then use the romance prompts in The Hunt and Following the River.
- Introduction, not a romance gate: I Fought the Law starts River’s storyline, but its choices are not reported to affect the romance.
- Optional rapport: letting the children win the AR game gets a positive response from River; it is not required to continue the quest or romance route.
