If combat in Cyberpunk 2077 has become effortless, you usually do not need a new save or an expansion. Start with the least disruptive change: raise the difficulty if it is below the highest setting, then weaken one part of your build at a time. Refund combat-defining perks, remove or downgrade selected cyberware, carry a lower-tier weapon, or impose a voluntary playstyle rule. Make a separate save before major experiments, and reserve the one-time attribute reset for a deliberate rebuild.
These changes are ways to create a more demanding run, not guaranteed difficulty multipliers. Update 2.0 changed higher-difficulty balance and made NPCs scale to V’s level, while the free Edgerunners 2 Update 2.5 launched on October 22, 2026. The practical goal is controlled adjustment: identify what is trivializing encounters, change one variable, play several fights, and only then decide whether another change is needed.

What should I check before changing my build?
Record the conditions that make encounters feel easy before you alter anything. A short diagnostic prevents you from weakening the wrong system and gives you a clean comparison after each change.
- Difficulty: note the current setting and whether it is already at the highest option.
- Offensive loop: identify the perk interaction, quickhack sequence, stealth opener, weapon type, or cyberware effect that ends fights before enemies can respond.
- Weapon tier: check the tier of the weapon doing most of your damage. Weapon damage scales with tier, so this is a controllable offensive lever.
- Defensive implants: list the cyberware that supplies armor or other survivability. Clothing is mostly cosmetic in the post-2.0 system.
- Combat habit: decide whether you normally clear rooms through direct gunplay, hacking, stealth, melee, or a repeated combination.
Create a separate manual save before refunding a large group of perks, removing expensive implants, or touching attributes. Then change one variable and play several ordinary encounters. The one-variable approach is a practical way to read your own build; it is not a publisher-tested balancing protocol.

Which rebalance lever should I use first?
Use a reversible, low-cost option before making a permanent progression decision. The table shows how the main choices differ.
| Lever | Reversibility | Primary effect | Existing save? | Purchase required? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raise difficulty | Can be changed again in the settings | Raises the general challenge; exact effect varies by build and encounter | Yes | No |
| Refund individual perks | Individual perks can be refunded for free | Reduces a specific offensive or defensive loop | Yes | No |
| Use a lower-tier weapon or fewer upgrades | Easy to reverse by changing equipment | Reduces offense without changing attributes | Yes | No |
| Remove or downgrade cyberware | Reversible at a ripperdoc, subject to your available implants and capacity | Usually affects survivability, and can also remove utility | Yes | No new purchase is required |
| Voluntary playstyle restriction | Fully reversible | Changes how you approach fights rather than rewriting character stats | Yes | No |
| Attribute rebuild | Limited: the game documents one attribute reset | Can reshape several perk trees at once | Yes | No expansion purchase is required |
This order keeps the highest-risk decision—the attribute reset—until you know what is actually causing the problem. If the only issue is that enemies die too quickly, changing defensive implants first may make fights longer without addressing your damage loop. If V never takes meaningful damage, removing a weapon may leave the real source of the imbalance untouched.

Change the difficulty setting before touching progression if it is not already at the highest level. It is the smallest intervention because it leaves your attributes, perks, weapons, cyberware and inventory intact.
- Open the game’s difficulty setting from the settings menu.
- Choose the next higher setting, or the highest setting if you have been playing below it.
- Load a separate save or continue from your current save and play several different encounters, including a fight that previously felt trivial.
- If the result is still effortless, keep the setting and move to one build lever rather than immediately changing everything.
Update 2.0 specifically rebalanced higher difficulties. It also changed level behavior so that “All NPCs now scale to your level,” according to CD PROJEKT RED’s Update 2.0 notes. That means traveling to a district that was once described as higher level is not a dependable way to find stronger opponents. Geography can change enemy groups and encounter layouts, but it is not a substitute for a difficulty or build adjustment.
How can I weaken an offensive perk loop?
Refund the individual perks that make your preferred attack sequence repeatable or disproportionately safe. Perk refunds are free and individual, so this is more precise than resetting an entire attribute category.
Find the perk that actually ends the fight
Watch the first few seconds of an encounter. If one quickhack chain, stealth bonus, charged shot, reflex maneuver, or melee interaction routinely removes most enemies, start with the perk that amplifies that interaction rather than removing unrelated utility. Keep movement, crafting, or exploration perks if they are not contributing to the combat problem.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Change one branch at a time
Refund one combat-defining branch, then test several fights. If the encounter remains too easy, refund the next reinforcing perk on a later save. This preserves a clear rollback point and shows whether the dominant effect came from a single perk or from the interaction of several.

Do not confuse perk refunds with attribute resets
The publisher distinguishes free individual perk refunds from an attribute reset. The official wording is: “You can also choose to reset your Attributes once.” Treat that reset as a one-time progression decision, not as a menu option you can repeatedly use whenever a build feels too strong.
Should I use a weaker weapon or fewer upgrades?
Yes, if enemies are dying before they can engage. Weapon damage scales with tier, so carrying a lower-tier weapon is a direct way to reduce offense while leaving your attributes and perk layout untouched.
Use a controlled equipment rule
- Replace the weapon responsible for most of your kills with a lower-tier version.
- Keep your normal cyberware and perks for the first comparison so you know what the weapon change did.
- If the lower tier is too restrictive, restore the weapon and remove one upgrade or switch to a less optimized weapon type.
- Apply the same rule consistently for a play session; changing weapons every few minutes makes the result hard to interpret.
This is not an exact damage formula or a promised difficulty increase. The useful point is control: a weapon swap can reduce burst damage without spending the one attribute reset or dismantling a complete build.
How do I make V less durable?
Inspect cyberware and defensive perks before changing clothing. In the current system, cyberware supplies most armor, while clothing is largely cosmetic, so a jacket swap is unlikely to be a meaningful survivability handicap.
Review armor-providing implants
Open your cyberware loadout and identify implants whose main contribution is armor or damage reduction. Remove or downgrade one defensive implant at a time, then keep the rest of the loadout unchanged. A ripperdoc can upgrade cyberware, but your available cyberware capacity limits how many implants you can equip.
Separate durability from utility
Some implants both protect you and enable a favorite tactic. Removing one may make combat harder while also preventing the build from functioning as intended. If that trade-off is too broad, refund a defensive perk instead, or remove a purely defensive implant while keeping mobility and hacking tools.
Use survivability changes for the right symptom
If V rarely takes meaningful damage because enemies die instantly, reducing armor alone may not create a satisfying fight; opponents may still be eliminated before their attacks matter. In that case, combine a modest defensive reduction with a lower-tier weapon or an offensive perk refund, but make the changes in separate steps so you can identify the useful one.

Can a different playstyle make combat challenging again?
A voluntary rule can produce a different experience without altering character progression. Treat it as a personal challenge, not an official difficulty mode.
Move away from the dominant routine
If you normally open every encounter from stealth, try a visible approach with cover and movement. If quickhacks solve every room, limit yourself to weapons for a session. If a single ranged weapon dominates, use another weapon category or close distance before attacking.
Set a rule you can follow
- Ban one preferred weapon or ability for a defined run of encounters.
- Require an alarm or direct engagement instead of resetting from stealth.
- Use hacks for control rather than damage, then finish targets with weapons.
- Choose a mobility rule, such as staying on foot instead of relying on a favorite escape sequence.
These restrictions change decision-making and pacing rather than claiming to lower a hidden damage number. They are useful when the build is powerful but you still enjoy its theme and do not want to dismantle it.
When should I use the one-time attribute reset?
Use it only when you want a deliberate rebuild across several attributes and perk trees. It is excessive for a single overperforming weapon or implant, and the documented limit is one reset.
Plan before confirming
- Make a separate save that preserves your current build.
- Write down the attributes, perk branches, cyberware requirements and weapons you intend to keep.
- Use the official build planner to map the proposed allocation before committing in-game. The planner’s controls help you plan; they do not turn the in-game attribute reset into a repeatable resource.
- Reset only after you can explain which old interactions you are removing and what new play pattern will replace them.
Choose a rebuild that changes decisions, not just numbers
A rebuild is most useful when it moves you into a different combat identity—for example, from a fully optimized damage loop to a hybrid that must alternate between control, movement and weapon attacks. Simply moving points from one damage branch to another may leave the same underlying problem intact.
What changed in the free Edgerunners 2 Update 2.5?
Version 2.5 launched on October 22, 2026, and is free for base-game owners. It does not require Phantom Liberty or the Ultimate Edition, although platform and storefront rollout qualifications can affect when an update appears for a particular player.
New systems that are relevant to experimentation
- Double Trouble: a Cool-tree perk for dual-wielding Power pistols and revolvers.
- Four auxiliary perks: the patch notes list four additional perks alongside Double Trouble. Their presence does not establish that they make combat easier or harder.
- Cross-platform mod selection: Update 2.5 adds an in-game way to select supported mods across platforms.
- Grouped save listings: saves can be organized in groups, which can make separate experimental runs easier to track.
The update does not provide a verified, universal “make my build weaker” switch. The official notes do not establish a specific difficulty mod, its compatibility, or a predictable balance result. On console, achievements or trophies cannot be earned from a modded save, so keep an unmodded save if those goals matter.

Do I need Phantom Liberty to make the game harder?
No. You can raise difficulty, refund perks, alter cyberware, change weapons and adopt a different combat routine in the base game. Phantom Liberty adds Dogtown missions and an exclusive Relic skill tree, which can offer a different progression path, but buying it is not necessary for rebalancing an existing build.
If you do own the expansion, treat its new content as additional options rather than a guaranteed challenge increase. The same one-variable method applies: change the activity or build element, play several encounters, and keep the save that gives you the experience you want.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if Very Hard is still too easy?
Very Hard is the logical first setting change, but a highly optimized late-game build can remain comfortable even there. Use the symptom you observe to choose the next lever.
Enemies die before they act
Lower the tier of the weapon doing the most damage, refund the perk that amplifies its opening attack, or impose a rule that prevents your strongest opener. Do not remove defensive cyberware first; it will not address an enemy that never survives long enough to attack.
Enemies can attack, but V never feels threatened
Inspect armor-providing cyberware and defensive perks. Remove or downgrade one defensive source, then replay encounters with the same weapon and offensive perks. Clothing is mostly cosmetic, so changing outfits is not the diagnostic step to prioritize.

One ability solves every encounter
Keep the rest of the build and restrict that ability for a session. If the game becomes engaging, you have identified a playstyle issue rather than a need for a complete respec.
The build feels powerful because encounters are repetitive
Change approach instead of only reducing numbers. Mix direct combat, hacking and stealth, or choose missions and enemy groups that force different positioning. District choice alone is not a reliable level-based solution because NPCs scale to V’s level.

What mistakes should I avoid?
- Resetting attributes first: you may spend the one documented reset without learning which perk, weapon or implant caused the imbalance.
- Changing several systems simultaneously: if you lower difficulty, remove cyberware and switch weapons at once, you cannot tell which change helped.
- Expecting clothing to reduce armor: most armor comes from cyberware in the current system.
- Assuming a new district is a harder tier: level scaling makes geography an unreliable difficulty shortcut.
- Using a mod as a guaranteed fix: Update 2.5’s mod support does not verify a particular difficulty mod or balance outcome, and console modded saves cannot earn achievements or trophies.
- Buying content to solve a balance problem: the free update and core rebalancing tools do not require Phantom Liberty or another purchase.
What is the safest sequence for a rebalance?
Use this sequence when you want a repeatable decision path rather than a complete rebuild.
- Save your current build separately and record the difficulty, main weapon tier, dominant perk loop and defensive implants.
- Raise the difficulty if it is below the highest setting.
- Play several fights without changing anything else.
- If offense is the problem, try a lower-tier weapon or refund one combat-defining perk.
- If survivability is the problem, remove or downgrade one armor-providing implant or defensive perk.
- If the build is still too automatic, adopt a voluntary restriction on the ability or weapon that solves encounters.
- Only after these smaller changes fail to produce the experience you want, plan the one-time attribute reset with the build planner and a preserved save.
This process does not promise a particular number of hits, deaths or damage reduction. It gives you reversible checkpoints and keeps the permanent decision for last.

Can I respec Cyberpunk 2077 perks without restarting my character?
Yes. Individual perks can be refunded for free, so you can alter a combat branch while keeping your level, equipment and story progress. Attributes are different: the game documents one attribute reset, not unlimited resets.
Does changing districts create higher-level enemies after Update 2.0?
Not reliably. Update 2.0 made NPCs scale to V’s level, so district travel changes encounter composition more than it guarantees a higher level bracket. Use the difficulty setting or a controlled build restriction when you need a dependable adjustment.
Will a modded save still unlock trophies on console?
No. The Update 2.5 patch notes warn that achievements or trophies cannot be earned on console from a modded save. Keep an unmodded save if you want to preserve trophy progress.
Is Phantom Liberty required for the Relic skill tree or for changing difficulty?
The Relic skill tree is exclusive to Phantom Liberty, but the expansion is not required to change difficulty, refund perks, alter cyberware or experiment with weapons. Update 2.5 itself is free for base-game owners.
