Cyberpunk 2077’s Edgerunners 2 Update (version 2.5) launched on October 22, 2026. It is a free update for base-game owners on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2; Phantom Liberty and the Ultimate Edition are not required. You can continue an existing character rather than starting over. The important qualification is that “no new playthrough required” describes the update itself, not every third-party modded save: mods can leave data behind, break quests or prevent launch, so back up saves before troubleshooting and verify each mod’s 2.5 support.

What is Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5, and do I need to buy anything?
Update 2.5 is the free Edgerunners 2 game update released by CD PROJEKT RED on October 22, 2026. The launch announcement lists PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, and says the update works with the base game without Phantom Liberty or the Ultimate Edition. The later launch announcement is the current availability reference; an earlier preview had described a staggered Switch 2 and Mac App Store rollout.
The companion anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is separate from the game update. It premiered on Netflix on October 20, 2026, has 10 episodes, and is not a paid prerequisite for any 2.5 feature. Will Update 2.5 break my save or make me start over?
No new character is required. CD PROJEKT RED’s update FAQ says, “The update doesn’t require you to start a new game, so you can keep playing wherever you last left off.” That is a statement about normal update progression, not an absolute guarantee against corruption or conflicts introduced by an old mod.
The Load Game screen now groups saves by playthrough and marks modded saves with an icon. This makes it easier to distinguish a conventional save from one that depends on enabled mods, but the icon does not certify that the mod list is healthy. If a save was created while a mod changed quests, inventory, UI or world data, disabling that mod later may not undo those changes.

What should I do before troubleshooting a PC save?
Make a separate copy of your saves before uninstalling, cleaning files or changing a large mod loadout. On Windows, CD PROJEKT RED identifies the save location as:

The publisher’s clean-install guidance warns that uninstall and cleanup can involve save and application-data locations, so do not delete those directories until the backup opens from its new location. Keep at least one pre-update or pre-mod save untouched. Give backups dates and identify the mod state, for example “before-2.5-clean” or “with-mods-enabled.” That preserves a recovery point if a later save has persistent scripting or quest changes.

Are my old mods compatible with Update 2.5?
There is no blanket compatibility guarantee. Update 2.5 adds an in-game mod.io menu, but that menu does not validate every pre-existing third-party PC mod. Check the author’s 2.5 release note and every required dependency before restoring a previous loadout.
How the built-in mod.io menu works
On supported platforms, the in-game route is:
- Open Mods from the main menu.
- Connect your CD PROJEKT RED account to mod.io when prompted.
- Subscribe to a mod.
- Restart the game if requested.
- Return to the Mods screen and confirm the entry is checked under Installed.
Individual mod pages show an Available on consoles tag when the creator has made the mod eligible for console use. A save made with mods enabled receives the modded-save marker. On consoles, trophies and achievements are disabled while playing a modded save; the published guidance does not establish the same blanket rule for PC.

What manually installed PC mods require
Manually installed frameworks are a separate version-matching problem. For example, the Cyber Engine Tweaks release page lists version 1.38.0 as supporting game patch 2.5 and game version 3.0.88.46235, and says that release no longer supports earlier game patches. That confirms the framework’s stated support only; it does not confirm that every plugin or mod depending on it works.
Before copying files back, inventory each framework, script extender, archive mod and dependency. Remove obsolete versions, install the author’s 2.5 build, and test with a disposable save before opening your primary playthrough. How do I recover a modded save that crashes or has broken quests?
CD PROJEKT RED warns that mod-caused launch failures, quest problems and UI changes can persist in save data even after a mod is disabled. Use this order so you do not destroy your best recovery point:

- Back up first. Copy the Windows save folder described above before changing files.
- Disable or unsubscribe from in-game mods. Restart and test the affected save.
- Load an earlier save made before the mod was used. If that save works, the later save may contain changes that cannot be safely removed by toggling a switch.
- For external PC mods, remove the loadout and follow the publisher’s clean-install procedure. Reinstall the game only after saves are secured.
- Restore mods one at a time. Confirm the game reaches the menu and the save loads before adding the next dependency.

Can a modded PC save move to PS5 or another platform?
Cross-progression requires the updated game, a connected CD PROJEKT RED account and cross-platform saves enabled. A modded transfer adds a stricter condition: both platforms need the same compatible enabled mods.
Account-synced subscriptions alone are not enough. A console-incompatible mod is ignored on the console, and a target save can fail to load correctly if the platform lacks a required compatible version. Before transferring, compare the enabled list on both systems, confirm each entry’s console eligibility, and create a clean unmodded save if you want the most predictable move.

Do console mods disable trophies and achievements?
Yes. CD PROJEKT RED states: “On consoles, Trophies and Achievements are disabled on modded save files.” The restriction applies when you play from a save marked as modded; it is not evidence that every PC save loses achievements. If trophies matter, keep a separate unmodded playthrough and do not overwrite it with a mod-enabled save.
Does Update 2.5 improve FPS?
CD PROJEKT RED announces optimizations, including work targeting ray tracing and PlayStation 5 Pro, but the 2.5 notes provide no comparable before-and-after FPS percentage. Treat feature support as capability information, not as a guaranteed frame-rate increase on your hardware.

Graphics and upscaling changes

Generated frames are not the same as a measured increase in base-frame rendering. Your result depends on GPU, CPU, resolution, ray-tracing settings, driver version and the selected upscaler.

Why won’t Cyberpunk 2077 launch or perform normally after the patch?
Separate a clean game regression from a mod conflict before changing saves. For a PC launch, stutter or graphics problem, CD PROJEKT RED recommends this sequence:
- Check for and, if necessary, clean-install the latest graphics driver.
- Verify the game files through your store client.
- Disable overlays and unnecessary background applications.
- Run Settings → Graphics → Run Benchmark and save the resulting information for diagnosis.
- If the installation is modded, disable or remove mods and repeat the test with an unmodded setup.
- If the problem remains, follow the save-first clean-install procedure rather than deleting folders immediately.
The game’s published minimum and recommended FPS targets date from Update 2.0 system requirements; they are not a 2.5-versus-2.31 benchmark. It is an optional display feature, not a performance cure. CD PROJEKT RED requires a compatible Samsung Odyssey 3D monitor as the primary PC display, an up-to-date Odyssey 3D Hub and 4K output. In 3D mode, frame generation and windowed mode are unavailable; a Motion Comfort control adjusts perceived depth for comfort.

Can I roll back from Update 2.5?
CD PROJEKT RED says only the latest game version is fully supported. Its rollback article documents legacy patch selection on Steam and GOG, while Epic is not documented as reversible there. The instructions do not document a supported 2.31 option, and they do not promise that a save newly written under 2.5 will work on an earlier build.
If you must investigate a rollback, preserve your current installation and saves first, use only the store’s documented branch, and expect mods to require their own matching game version. Will Update 2.5 break my save?

Are my old mods compatible with 2.5?

Only when both platforms have the same compatible enabled mods, with cross-progression turned on and the game linked to your CD PROJEKT RED account. A subscription synchronized to your account does not make a console-incompatible mod load on PS5.
Does 2.5 improve FPS?
The publisher lists rendering optimizations and new upscaling features but gives no patch-wide FPS percentage. Results depend on hardware, drivers, resolution and settings, so use the built-in benchmark for your own before-and-after record.
