Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want a dense, continuous-feeling megacity, driving, real-time gunplay, cybernetic builds, and a cinematic story expanded by Phantom Liberty. Choose The Outer Worlds if you prefer a more compact, segmented colony journey built around dialogue, factions, companions, flaws, and satirical corporate politics. Both are single-player science-fiction RPGs with consequential choices, but they deliver very different ideas of exploration and role-playing.
What each game is
Cyberpunk 2077
CD PROJEKT RED presents Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world action-adventure RPG set in Night City. You play V, a mercenary who accepts a job to steal an implant connected to immortality. The central story combines identity, technology, power, and survival, while decisions influence the story and V’s relationships.

Night City is the game’s primary playground. Streets, interiors, vehicles, gigs, side activities, and major story missions occupy one broad urban setting, so moving between objectives feels like traveling through a functioning city rather than selecting isolated maps.

Halcyon is a network of settlements, space stations, and other colony locations. You travel between these areas, meet competing factions, recruit companions, and decide what kind of person your colonist becomes. It is more accurate to call Halcyon a multi-location colony RPG than a single seamless city map.

How open-world exploration differs
Night City is built for continuous urban travel
Cyberpunk 2077 gives you a large-feeling urban routine: drive or walk through districts, accept gigs, stop for side activities, and return to the main narrative whenever you choose. Vehicles make distance part of the experience, while the density of streets and interiors keeps objectives close to other distractions.
The result is an open world that supports improvisation. You can approach an objective with firearms, melee weapons, stealth, or hacking, then detour into unrelated work before returning to the main plot. Story choices also alter V’s relationships and the outcomes attached to particular quest lines.
Halcyon is a connected colony, not one uninterrupted map
The Outer Worlds distributes its content among settlements, stations, and other locations. Each place has its own factions, characters, quests, and conflicts. Travel is therefore more deliberate: you choose which colony location to visit, investigate its local power structure, and decide how your actions affect the people there.
This structure makes the game feel compact and authored rather than like an endless urban sandbox. Exploration is still important, but the emphasis is on discovering how a location’s politics and residents respond to your decisions, not on traversing one uninterrupted city.
Which approach suits you?
- Choose Night City if you want driving, constant street-level activity, and a seamless-feeling urban backdrop.
- Choose Halcyon if you prefer discrete areas with clearly framed faction disputes and dialogue-heavy investigation.
- Neither game should be declared the universal winner on map size; no reliable map-area statistic establishes that comparison.
Combat, builds, and moment-to-moment play
Cyberpunk 2077: action first, with several approaches
Combat runs in real time. Firearms and melee are joined by cyberware, hacking, stealth, and skills that let you shape V around a preferred method. A build can emphasize direct gunfights, close-range attacks, covert movement, or technological manipulation of enemies and environments.
Vehicles are part of ordinary travel, while cinematic missions place your combat decisions inside highly directed set pieces. The combination favors players who want an action RPG where movement, aiming, equipment, and abilities remain central between dialogue scenes.
The Outer Worlds: shooting supported by role-playing decisions
The Outer Worlds also uses a first-person view, but its identity rests more heavily on dialogue and faction consequences. Shooting is integrated with conversations, skill checks, companion abilities, and decisions about which groups to support.

- THE ULTIMATE CYBERPUNK 2077 EXPERIENCE - Includes the critically acclaimed spy thriller expansion Phantom Liberty
- CREATE YOUR OWN CYBERPUNK
- Explore the city of the future – you decide when you want to go where and how to get there
- Decide how the story ends – your choices in the main game as well as in the spy thriller adventure Phantom Liberty lead to a complex web of consequences
The optional flaw system adds a trade-off to character development: accepting a disadvantage can be part of defining your colonist. Obsidian states that choices affect the character build as well as companion stories and end-game scenarios, so progression is tied to role-playing decisions rather than combat alone.
Build choice in practical terms
- Cyberpunk 2077: best for players who want to tune combat behavior through cyberware, weapons, skills, hacking, and stealth.
- The Outer Worlds: best for players who want dialogue skills, faction decisions, companions, and flaws to influence how situations can be solved.
Choices, factions, and companions
Cyberpunk 2077’s choices are embedded in relationships and missions
V’s decisions affect the people encountered across Night City and can change the direction or outcome of quest lines. The game combines personal relationships with larger questions about identity, technology, power, and survival. The feeling is less about selecting a formal political alignment and more about deciding whom V trusts, helps, betrays, or allows to shape the future.
The Outer Worlds makes faction politics explicit
Halcyon is organized around competing groups and corporate interests. Dialogue and faction decisions determine how communities respond to you and which outcomes remain available. The game’s satire comes from placing personal survival inside a colony governed by corporate systems, then letting you challenge, support, or manipulate those systems.

Companions have a larger structural role in The Outer Worlds
Companions are central to the colony journey and receive personal missions of their own. Their goals can conflict with faction interests or with your preferred solution to a problem. If companion stories and party relationships are your main reason for playing a role-playing game, The Outer Worlds puts that material closer to the center of its design.
Cyberpunk 2077 also builds major relationships into V’s story, but those relationships are presented through cinematic quest lines within the broader city adventure rather than through a traditional colony-party structure.
Tone, writing, and pacing
Cyberpunk 2077 is darker and more tragic
Night City is an adult setting shaped by inequality, violence, corporate power, and the fear that technology can erode identity. The central implant plot gives the story an urgent, personal conflict, while side missions explore the consequences of living in that world. Expect a dramatic, often bleak tone and a main story presented with cinematic direction.
The Outer Worlds is colorful and satirical
Obsidian uses exaggerated corporate language, absurd bureaucracy, and competing ideologies to create a lighter surface tone. Its satire does not remove the stakes: decisions still affect communities, companions, and the colony’s future. The contrast between humorous presentation and serious consequences is a defining feature.
Pacing differences
- Cyberpunk 2077 alternates between a cinematic main plot, open-world detours, vehicle travel, and combat-focused gigs.
- The Outer Worlds moves from one colony location to another, with quests and faction conflicts concentrated in each area.
- Players who dislike long stretches of unscripted travel may find Halcyon’s segmented structure easier to manage.
- Players who want to lose an evening to side jobs, driving, and spontaneous street activity may prefer Night City.
Expansions and edition contents
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty
Phantom Liberty launched on September 26, 2023. It adds Dogtown, a walled-off district within the wider Night City setting, and frames its story as a spy thriller. The expansion also adds a new skill tree, gigs, side quests, weapons, items, and repeatable open-world activities.

CD PROJEKT RED defines Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as an open-world RPG package containing the base game and Phantom Liberty. The cited announcement covers PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Check the current store listing for the exact regional product name and included content before purchase.
The Outer Worlds expansions
Peril on Gorgon was announced as the first of two narrative expansions in Obsidian’s Switch coverage. Murder on Eridanos, released March 17, 2021, is the second narrative expansion. It presents a murder mystery across floating islands, supports companion participation, adds a clue-finding gadget, and introduces three science weapons.

The expansions extend Halcyon’s location-based structure rather than turning it into a seamless open world. They are a good fit if you want more investigations, companion involvement, and unusual science-fiction scenarios after the main campaign.

What to check before buying
Edition names can be easy to confuse. A listing that says “Ultimate” for Cyberpunk 2077 should identify both the base game and Phantom Liberty; do not rely on a product photo or a retailer’s shortened title alone. On console, confirm that the listing matches your hardware generation, especially because the cited Ultimate Edition announcement covers PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
For The Outer Worlds, determine whether you are buying the base game or a bundle that includes Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos. A physical Switch purchase has the additional storage consideration of a possible download of up to 6 GB, even though the game is supplied on a cartridge.
Prices, discounts, patches, regional products, and cloud-service policies change. Compare the current store pages at checkout rather than assuming an older bundle, sale price, or streaming arrangement still applies.

- Decide how you want to travel. Pick Night City’s continuous urban movement if driving and street-level exploration matter; pick Halcyon’s separated locations if you prefer focused areas and clearer transitions.
- Decide what you want to do in combat. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for cyberware, hacking, stealth, firearms, and melee experimentation. Choose The Outer Worlds when shooting is one part of a broader dialogue-and-faction role-playing loop.
- Decide how you want choices to work. Night City emphasizes personal relationships and quest outcomes. Halcyon emphasizes factions, companions, dialogue, flaws, and colony-wide consequences.
- Check the edition. For Cyberpunk, verify whether Phantom Liberty is included. For The Outer Worlds, verify whether the listing includes the base game only or an edition with both narrative expansions.
- Check your platform and storage. Storefront support, patches, cloud access, and physical-media requirements vary by platform and region.
Is one objectively better?
No. The games prioritize different kinds of role-playing. Cyberpunk 2077 is the stronger fit for an action-led, vehicle-supported city adventure with cybernetic builds and a cinematic main story. The Outer Worlds is the stronger fit for compact exploration organized around factions, companions, dialogue, flaws, and satire. Current prices, platform performance, patches, and edition contents should be compared separately because they change over time and are not universal across hardware.
