The 60-second answer
d2d1.dll is the genuine Microsoft D2D Library, part of the Windows graphics system called Direct2D. Windows supplies it; it is not normally a standalone Visual C++, .NET, game, or legacy DirectX download.

Microsoft documents Direct2D as a Windows API for rendering text, shapes, images, and other 2D graphics. Its development components include d2d1.h and d2d1.lib; d2d1.dll is the Windows runtime implementation used by applications. See Microsoft’s Direct2D overview and Direct2D API documentation.
What is d2d1.dll?
d2d1.dll is a Microsoft Windows system component whose description or internal name is Microsoft D2D Library. It belongs to the Microsoft Windows Operating System and is published by Microsoft Corporation.
Direct2D is part of the Windows graphics stack. Windows and third-party applications can use it for hardware-accelerated 2D rendering, including:

- Geometric shapes

That explains why the message can appear when starting Office, a graphics application, a game, or another program with a graphical interface. The failing application may not own the file. It may simply be requesting a Windows component that is missing, damaged, incompatible, or unable to load one of its dependencies.
Is d2d1.dll malware?
A file named d2d1.dll in the normal Windows system location can be legitimate. The name alone does not prove that every copy is safe, however.
Do not replace a suspected file manually. First check whether Windows Security quarantined the original, then use DISM and SFC to restore protected Windows files. If the file is located in an unusual application folder, appears alongside suspicious software, or repeatedly disappears, perform a malware scan instead of assuming it is a normal Windows copy.
Is it part of DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET?
d2d1.dll is a Windows Direct2D runtime component. It is not normally repaired by installing a Visual C++ Redistributable or .NET.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer installs older side-by-side components such as D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX 1.1. Microsoft states that it does not replace the DirectX runtime included with Windows. It is therefore not the general repair for a missing Windows d2d1.dll.
Install Visual C++ only when the complete application error identifies an MSVC runtime dependency. Microsoft explains the scope of those packages in its Visual C++ Redistributable FAQ.
Where should d2d1.dll be located?
On 64-bit Windows, the native 64-bit system copy is normally under:
C:WindowsSystem32
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows normally uses the 32-bit system-file view, commonly represented by:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →C:WindowsSysWOW64
The names are counterintuitive. System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Windows file-system redirection determines which view a 32-bit process sees. Microsoft describes this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, or either file into an application’s folder. A known version from an old file database is not automatically correct for your installation. Windows servicing changes system files over time, and the correct file depends on the installed build and architecture.
What the different errors mean
“d2d1.dll was not found”
Windows or the application could not locate a usable copy in the expected search path. The file may have been deleted, quarantined, damaged, or made unavailable by an incomplete update.
It can also be an application-specific installation problem. If only one program produces the error, its installation may be damaged even when Windows itself is healthy.
“The application could not be started because d2d1.dll was not found”
This is the same basic condition, shown in a different Windows or application dialog. Reinstalling the application can help when only that application fails, but it is not the first step if several programs show the message.
“d2d1.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This usually indicates more than a simple missing file. Possible causes include:
- A corrupt Windows binary
- A mismatched Windows update
- Wrong architecture
- Incompatible dependencies
- An incomplete upgrade
- A damaged application installation
- Malware or storage corruption
The file being present does not prove that it is correct. Use Windows repair commands rather than downloading another copy.
“The procedure entry point could not be located”
This normally means the program loaded a d2d1.dll, but the loaded file does not provide the function the program expects. A Windows-build mismatch, unsupported operating system, wrong architecture, or incompatible application is more likely than a simple missing-file problem.

If the dialog includes a d2d1.dll path or bad-image status, treat it as an integrity or compatibility issue. Do not repeatedly register or replace the DLL. Repair Windows first, then repair the affected application if the issue is limited to that program.
First diagnosis: Windows-wide or application-specific?
Before changing files, answer these questions:
- Does the error affect one program or several?
- Did it begin after Windows Update, an upgrade, disk cleanup, “debloating,” antivirus changes, or manual deletion?
- Does the affected program have a repair or verify-files option?
- Does Windows Security show
d2d1.dllin Protection history? - Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does Windows itself report additional errors, crashes, or failed updates?
If only one game fails and other graphics applications work, repair the game first. If several applications fail, or the problem started after servicing or cleanup, prioritize Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
An incomplete update can leave related Windows graphics components on mismatched builds.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the affected application.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and test the application.
Microsoft provides the current procedure in its guide to installing Windows updates.
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, do not download an isolated d2d1.dll. Repair the Windows image in the next section. A failed upgrade may require a supported Windows repair process rather than a single-file replacement.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a genuinely missing or corrupted Windows copy.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses protected system files and the repaired component store to check and replace damaged files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window because progress appears to pause at times.
When DISM completes successfully, continue with SFC.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Restart Windows after both commands finish, then open the affected application.

What the results mean
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file problem. If the application still fails, investigate the application, architecture, driver, or compatibility.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, use a suitable repair source or move to System Restore or a Windows repair installation.
- DISM cannot find source files: Use a repair source matching the installed Windows edition and build. Do not substitute an arbitrary folder or another computer’s Windows directory.
Microsoft’s full System File Checker repair guide includes the supported DISM source syntax and instructions for reviewing the CBS log at %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the system issues involved, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM/SFC commands remain the built-in repair path.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows and other applications work normally, the problem is probably specific to the program that displays the error.
For a normal Windows application
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Open Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help and the option is available, use Reset, understanding that it can remove application data or settings.
For desktop programs without these options:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Restart if requested.
- Reinstall the program from its official installer if repair fails.
For a game
Use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or equivalent command. The wording differs by launcher.
The verification process restores the game’s own files and configuration. It does not replace the Windows copy of d2d1.dll, so run DISM and SFC if multiple programs fail or the Windows component itself is damaged.
If verification fails, uninstall and reinstall the game. Remove only the game files and folders identified by the launcher or vendor instructions. Do not delete d2d1.dll from System32 or SysWOW64.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Check this before copying anything.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
d2d1.dll.
Only restore or allow a file after confirming that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed system file and that the detection is a false positive. If the detection identifies malware, leave it quarantined and run a complete scan.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can cause Windows Security to detect it again. Review Microsoft’s Protection History guidance before taking action.

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can use the 32-bit system-file view, while a 64-bit application uses the native 64-bit copy. An error limited to one older application may indicate that the program expects a different Windows API or architecture.
Check the application’s documentation or installer architecture. Then:
- Install all available Windows updates.
- Repair or reinstall the application using the correct installer.
- Avoid copying a DLL from another architecture.
- If the application requires a newer Direct2D API, use a supported Windows version or a compatible application release.
Direct2D is available in Windows 7 and later, with older Windows 7 installations requiring the relevant platform update. Microsoft documents the Windows 7 platform update and its Direct2D changes in its Platform Update documentation. Windows 7 is obsolete and should not be treated as a generally supported current platform.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the display driver
A crash that names d2d1.dll does not prove that the DLL is corrupt. Direct2D may be present and intact while a graphics driver, overlay, hardware-acceleration setting, or damaged profile causes the application to crash.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the affected application.
For a persistent problem, download the correct driver through the PC or graphics-card manufacturer’s official support channel. If a recent driver caused the crash:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart and test.
Manually identifying the right driver can involve checking hardware IDs, Windows build compatibility, and several driver packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while installing drivers requires its full version; it is optional, and the PC or GPU manufacturer’s driver remains the appropriate source.
If the file is present and SFC reports no integrity issue, also test with overlays, recording utilities, compatibility layers, or hardware acceleration disabled in the affected application. A display-driver or hardware failure requires graphics troubleshooting, not a replacement DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why regsvr32 d2d1.dll is normally wrong
Do not run this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 d2d1.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. A Windows Direct2D runtime library is not an ordinary plug-in that should be registered manually.
The command may produce an entry-point or compatibility error, and it does not repair a missing or damaged Windows component. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Fix 7: Use System Restore or a Windows repair installation
Use recovery options when the problem began after a recent update, failed upgrade, cleanup operation, or software change and DISM/SFC cannot restore Windows.
System Restore
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore changes system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal files. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf there is no suitable restore point, use Microsoft’s supported Windows repair or in-place installation process for the installed edition and build. Back up important data first and follow the repair instructions for your Windows version. A repair installation is appropriate when the Windows component store or servicing stack remains damaged after normal repair.
What not to do
Avoid these common shortcuts:
- Do not download
d2d1.dllfrom a random DLL download website. - Do not copy the file from another computer, Windows installation, game folder, or old backup without matching the complete Windows environment.
- Do not delete the existing copy before repairing Windows.
- Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the application’s executable as a permanent fix.
- Do not assume DirectX End-User Runtime, Visual C++, or .NET will restore this Windows binary.
- Do not run
regsvr32merely because the filename ends in.dll. - Do not disable antivirus broadly to force a file into place.
- Do not assume every crash mentioning
d2d1.dllproves that the DLL is defective.
FAQ
Can I download d2d1.dll from Microsoft?
Microsoft supplies d2d1.dll as part of Windows. The safe repair method is Windows Update, DISM, and SFC, not downloading an isolated file. If an application needs additional legacy DirectX components, use the official Microsoft package that documents those components, but it is not a general d2d1.dll repair.
Will reinstalling the application fix d2d1.dll?
It can fix the problem when only one application is affected and its installation is damaged. It will not repair a corrupted Windows copy used by multiple applications.
Should I install DirectX?
Not automatically. The legacy DirectX End-User Runtime installs older side-by-side libraries and does not modify the DirectX runtime included with Windows. Use it only when the application’s requirements specifically identify one of those legacy components.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the complete error identifies an MSVC runtime dependency. Visual C++ Redistributables do not normally reinstall the Windows Direct2D binary.
Why does Windows say the file is in System32 when my app is 32-bit?
Windows file-system redirection presents different system-file views to 32-bit and 64-bit processes. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows normally uses the 32-bit system copy represented by SysWOW64. Do not move files between the folders manually.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If repair still fails, review %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, use a matching repair source, or escalate to System Restore or a supported Windows repair installation.
What if the error started after antivirus software changed?
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Confirm whether the file was quarantined, and investigate the detection before restoring anything. A recurring detection can indicate malware or a false positive that needs proper verification.
Recommended Free Tools
What if only graphics applications crash but d2d1.dll is present?
Run DISM and SFC to verify Windows, then update or roll back the display driver. Investigate overlays, hardware acceleration, damaged application profiles, and hardware stability. A crash stack naming d2d1.dll is not proof that the system file is the cause.
