maxxbass.dll Not Found: Repair Waves MaxxBass Safely

maxxbass.dll belongs to Waves Audio’s MaxxBass plug-in, not to Windows. The safest fix is to reinstall the matching Waves MaxxBass version through Waves Central or its official legacy installer, then rescan your DAW rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What this file actually does

maxxbass.dll is a third-party audio plug-in component associated with MaxxBass, a bass-enhancement plug-in developed by Waves Audio. Older Waves installations may expose the plug-in through a file with this name, while newer Waves installations use versioned plug-in folders and WaveShell files.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Waves currently lists MaxxBass across versions V9 through V17 on its official MaxxBass page. The exact legacy filename may therefore depend on the Waves generation installed on the computer and the format used by the DAW.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This file is not a Windows component. Do not copy it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, and do not replace it with a similarly named file from an unrelated application.

The error usually appears when:

  • A DAW opens a project containing MaxxBass.
  • A plug-in scanner checks an old Waves installation.
  • An older audio application starts.
  • A Waves update or uninstall leaves the installation incomplete.
  • Windows Security quarantines a plug-in file.
  • The DAW cannot find the correct Waves folder or WaveShell.
  • The project requires an older Waves generation that is no longer installed.
  • The plug-in loads but one of its dependencies, a license, or its required runtime is unavailable.

Typical messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because maxxbass.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application failed to start because maxxbass.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading maxxbass.dll.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “maxxbass.dll could not be located.”
  • “The file maxxbass.dll is missing or corrupted.”

The exact wording is less important than the application displaying it. A message naming maxxbass.dll does not always prove that this file alone is missing. “The specified module could not be found” can also indicate a dependency failure.

Cause-by-symptom guide

What you see Most likely cause Best next step
The error began after uninstalling or updating Waves Incomplete or removed Waves installation Reinstall the matching Waves product
The plug-in is missing only in one DAW Incorrect scan path, format, or WaveShell Check the DAW’s plug-in paths and rescan
An old project fails but newer projects open The project needs an older Waves generation Install the required legacy Waves version
The file exists but the DAW still reports it missing License, WaveShell, dependency, or architecture problem Check Waves licensing, host compatibility, and runtime errors
Windows Security lists a Waves file in Protection history Antivirus quarantine Verify its provenance and reinstall from Waves if uncertain
The error names VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll Microsoft Visual C++ runtime problem Repair the official Visual C++ Redistributable
Several unrelated Windows components are failing Possible Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC
Only a 32-bit host fails Architecture mismatch Use a compatible Waves version and plug-in format

Fix 1: Reinstall MaxxBass through Waves Central

This is the primary repair when maxxbass.dll was deleted, damaged, removed during an update, or never installed completely.

Before starting, close the DAW and any other audio application. If the project uses an old Waves version, identify that version first. Installing the newest available release without checking can leave an older project incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Waves V11 through V17

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Select All apps.
  3. Open Waves Central.
  4. Sign in to the Waves account that owns the MaxxBass license.
  5. Select Install Products.
  6. Open My Products.
  7. Find MaxxBass or the Waves bundle containing it.
  8. Select the license device when Waves Central asks where to activate the product.
  9. Choose Install or Install & Activate.
  10. Wait for the installation to finish.
  11. Restart Windows if Waves Central requests it.
  12. Open the DAW and perform a full plug-in rescan.

Waves documents the current installation process in its Install and Activate Products guide.

If Waves Central reports an installation error, restart the computer and try again. If the same failure continues, follow Waves’ Waves Central installation troubleshooting instructions. A cache or installer problem may require the official troubleshooting procedure rather than a manually copied DLL.

For Waves V9 and V10

Waves V9 and V10 products require the matching official legacy offline installer. Do not assume that a current Waves Central installation will restore an old project that depends on one of these generations.

  1. Close the DAW.
  2. Check the project documentation, old computer, or existing Waves installation for the required Waves version.
  3. Open Waves’ legacy installation guide.
  4. Download the official installer for the required generation.
  5. Install the version that matches the project and your Windows and DAW compatibility.
  6. Activate the product using the appropriate Waves license method.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Rescan the DAW’s plug-in formats.

If the license for the discontinued version is unavailable, reinstalling a DLL will not solve the project problem. You may need to open the project on a compatible system, render or freeze the affected track, or replace the plug-in with a currently licensed version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair is successful when:

  • Waves Central reports that MaxxBass installed successfully.
  • The DAW finds MaxxBass during its scan.
  • MaxxBass appears in the Waves plug-in list.
  • The affected project opens without the missing-file message.
  • The plug-in loads and produces audio instead of showing a license or initialization error.

If Waves Central completes successfully but the DAW still cannot find MaxxBass, continue with the scan-path and WaveShell checks below.

Fix 2: Check the Waves folders and WaveShell

Waves does not generally expect you to move the internal plug-in files manually. A WaveShell is placed in a host plug-in directory and connects the DAW to the Waves plug-in installation.

Typical Windows locations include:

C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V17
C:Program FilesCommon FilesVST3
C:Program FilesVSTPlugins

The versioned internal folder may instead be Plug-Ins V9, Plug-Ins V10, or another installed Waves generation. Check the official Waves plug-in folder guidance rather than guessing from a third-party file listing.

Check whether the Waves installation exists

  1. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to C:Program Files (x86)Waves.
  3. Look for a versioned folder such as Plug-Ins V17.
  4. If you use VST3, browse to C:Program FilesCommon FilesVST3.
  5. If your older DAW uses VST2, check the custom VST folder configured for that DAW.
  6. Do not move individual Waves plug-in files between these folders.
  7. If the expected Waves folder is missing, return to Waves Central or the appropriate legacy installer and repair the installation.

Check the DAW’s plug-in scan paths

Every DAW uses its own menus, but the procedure is generally:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the DAW.
  2. Open Preferences, Settings, or Options.
  3. Select Plug-ins, Plug-in Manager, or VST settings.
  4. Confirm that the folder containing the appropriate Waves WaveShell is included.
  5. Confirm that the standard VST3 folder is included if you installed VST3:
    C:Program FilesCommon FilesVST3
  6. Remove obsolete or duplicate paths only if you know they point to an incomplete installation.
  7. Choose Rescan, Full Rescan, or Reset and Rescan.
  8. Close and reopen the DAW.
  9. Search the plug-in browser for MaxxBass and Waves.

Waves provides additional guidance for using Waves plug-ins with a custom VST folder.

Waves V15 and later do not support VST2, so an old DAW that scans only VST2 may not see a current Waves installation. Use VST3 where the host supports it, or install a compatible older Waves generation for the legacy host.

Fix 3: Match the Waves version, DAW, and Windows architecture

A 32-bit host, 64-bit host, old Waves release, and current Windows installation may not be interchangeable.

Check these items:

  • Whether the DAW is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether the Waves version supports your Windows release.
  • Whether the host supports VST3, VST2, or AAX as required.
  • Whether the project was created with an older Waves generation.
  • Whether the correct WaveShell is installed.
  • Whether the Waves license is available and activated.

Waves V17 officially supports 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. Older releases have separate operating-system and host requirements. Review the Waves system requirements and supported-host information.

If a 32-bit DAW is attempting to load a 64-bit-only installation, placing a DLL in a Windows system folder will not correct the mismatch. Use a compatible host and Waves generation, or move the project to a supported environment.

  • With a single knob, you can blend between monitoring your computers output and a direct feed from the mixer. Great for recording overdubs alongside a pre-recorded track.

Fix 4: Check the MaxxBass license and WaveShell

A project can report a missing plug-in even when the underlying file is present. The cause may be an unavailable Waves license, a disconnected license device, or a WaveShell that the host cannot load.

  1. Close the DAW.
  2. Open Waves Central.
  3. Sign in to the correct Waves account.
  4. Open the license or product-management area.
  5. Confirm that MaxxBass or its bundle is listed.
  6. Check that the license is activated on the device or USB location you intend to use.
  7. Reconnect the license device if applicable.
  8. Return to Install Products and reinstall the matching product if it is listed but incomplete.
  9. Reopen the DAW.
  10. Run a full plug-in rescan.

If only one project reports the problem, compare its saved plug-in format and Waves generation with a new session. If every Waves plug-in fails, suspect the WaveShell, installation, license, or host compatibility rather than one missing MaxxBass file.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a plug-in file. Do not restore a file blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an entry involving Waves, MaxxBass, or the affected installation path.
  7. Expand the entry and review the detected file location.
  8. Restore it only when you can verify that it came from a legitimate Waves installation and the current security check supports that decision.
  9. If the file’s origin is uncertain, choose not to restore it.
  10. Reinstall MaxxBass from Waves instead.
  11. Run a current Windows Security scan.
  12. Rescan plug-ins in the DAW.

Microsoft explains these decisions in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.

A clean reinstall from Waves is preferable to restoring an isolated file because it can restore the related WaveShell, metadata, dependencies, and licensing components together.

Fix 6: Repair Visual C++ only when the error identifies it

Do not install a Visual C++ package merely because maxxbass.dll is missing. There is no evidence that every MaxxBass error is caused by this runtime.

Use this step when the message names a Microsoft runtime such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • VCRUNTIME140.dll
  • MSVCP140.dll
  • api-ms-win-crt-...

It is also reasonable when the Waves installer specifically reports a runtime failure.

  1. Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
  2. Download the architecture required by the application.
  3. Install the x64 package for a 64-bit application.
  4. Install the x86 package for a 32-bit DAW or plug-in.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Open the DAW and rescan MaxxBass.

Installing both x86 and x64 can be necessary when a computer runs both 32-bit and 64-bit audio applications. Microsoft’s DLL architecture guidance explains why the runtime architecture must match the application.

Do not download runtime DLLs individually. Use Microsoft’s signed redistributable packages.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components as a late fallback

Because maxxbass.dll is not a Windows system file, SFC and DISM will not normally restore it. Use these commands when Windows itself is showing broader corruption or when several unrelated applications are failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete.
  3. Restart Windows.

Run SFC second

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test the DAW again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

Manually hunting Windows component versions and repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of reported Windows issues, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling Waves remains the definitive fix for a missing MaxxBass component.

Fix 8: Check updates and device drivers only when relevant

Windows updates will not normally restore a third-party Waves plug-in, but an outdated system or audio driver can affect a DAW’s ability to initialize audio hardware.

Check Windows Update

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install available updates.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the DAW and rescan plug-ins.

Check the audio device in Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the audio interface or sound device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Check the driver status and date.
  8. If the device has a warning icon, select Update driver and follow the wizard.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Test the DAW.

Do not remove a working audio-interface driver merely because maxxbass.dll is missing. Driver repair is relevant when the DAW has no audio device, crashes while opening its audio engine, or reports a driver initialization failure.

Manually checking several hardware vendors and guessing which driver is stale can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it will not replace the required Waves installation.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.

An audio plug-in module is not automatically repaired by registering it. Running a command such as this is generally inappropriate:

regsvr32 maxxbass.dll

It may produce an error, register nothing useful, or create confusion about the actual Waves installation. Use Waves Central, the correct legacy installer, the DAW’s scan settings, and the license checks instead. Microsoft documents the command’s intended purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.

Why downloading maxxbass.dll is unsafe

Avoid random DLL download sites and file-replacement instructions that tell you to copy maxxbass.dll into System32.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A downloaded file may have:

  • The wrong Waves version.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • Missing dependencies.
  • No connection to your licensed WaveShell.
  • A damaged or modified binary.
  • Malware or another unwanted payload.
  • No matching plug-in metadata or installation records.

Even a genuine-looking file may only hide the first error. The DAW can still fail because the Waves license, WaveShell, scan path, runtime, or host architecture is wrong.

Use Waves’ official MaxxBass product page, Waves Central installation process, or the official legacy installer guidance.

If the problem still persists

Collect these details before repeating repairs or contacting Waves support:

  1. The complete error message.
  2. The application displaying it.
  3. The DAW name and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. The Windows version.
  5. The Waves generation installed.
  6. The MaxxBass license status.
  7. The exact path where Waves is installed.
  8. Whether the issue affects one project or every project.
  9. Whether the file was quarantined.
  10. Whether the failure occurs during scanning, project loading, or plug-in use.
  11. Whether another Waves plug-in loads successfully.
  12. Whether the error names an additional dependency such as VCRUNTIME140.dll.

These details distinguish a missing plug-in from a missing WaveShell, incompatible host, unavailable license, runtime failure, or damaged Windows installation.

FAQ

Is maxxbass.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with Waves Audio’s MaxxBass plug-in and should not normally be placed in a Windows system directory.

Which program uses maxxbass.dll?

Waves MaxxBass and older Waves plug-in installations use the MaxxBass component. A DAW or older audio application may report the error when loading a project that references it.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. That can create an architecture mismatch and does not restore the Waves installation, WaveShell, license, or dependencies.

Should I install Waves V17 for an old project?

Not automatically. The project may require an older Waves generation. Identify the required version and use Waves Central for V11–V17 or the matching official legacy installer for V9–V10.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the DAW say MaxxBass is missing when the file exists?

The DAW may be scanning the wrong folder or format, missing the correct WaveShell, unable to validate the license, loading the wrong architecture, or failing on a dependency.

Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?

Only when the error or installer identifies a Microsoft runtime problem. A plain maxxbass.dll message does not establish that Visual C++ is the cause.

Can SFC or DISM restore MaxxBass?

No. They repair Windows components, not third-party Waves plug-ins. Reinstall MaxxBass from Waves first.

Does regsvr32 fix MaxxBass?

Generally no. Audio plug-in files are not repaired by generic DLL registration. Restore the product through Waves and rescan the DAW instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Windows Security quarantined the file?

Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. If the file’s provenance is uncertain, do not restore it. Reinstall the plug-in from Waves and scan the system.

What is the correct final fix?

For most cases, install the matching Waves MaxxBass version through Waves Central or the official legacy installer, confirm the WaveShell and DAW scan path, verify the license, and rescan the plug-in.
