A “missing,” “not found,” or “cannot start because d3d12.dll is missing” message means that the program could not load this Windows graphics component at launch. The text alone does not identify one universal cause. The file may be damaged, Windows’ component store may be inconsistent, the application may have a separate installation problem, or the game may require graphics-driver or hardware support that is not available on the PC.
Do not treat the message as an instruction to replace the file with a random copy. A DLL from a third-party download site can be the wrong build, can conflict with the installed Windows version, and has no established authenticity in the sources for this issue.

Is d3d12.dll included with Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. Microsoft states that Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include the latest DirectX version intended for those releases. DirectX servicing for these versions is delivered through Windows Update, so the supported first move is to update Windows rather than look for a separate DirectX package or a loose DLL.
“Latest” is relative to the Windows release and its servicing state. A fully patched Windows 10 installation and a fully patched Windows 11 installation do not have to contain identical surrounding files, which is why a replacement source used for repair must match the installed operating system.
What should I check before repairing the file?
Use DirectX Diagnostic Tool
- Open the Start menu and search for
dxdiag. - Launch DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If Windows asks whether it should check that drivers are digitally signed, accept the check when you are collecting diagnostics.
- On the System tab, read the reported DirectX version and note the Windows edition and system details.
- Select Save All Information to create a report if you need to contact the game publisher, graphics-hardware vendor, or Microsoft support.
dxdiag confirms what Windows reports; it does not repair a missing library. Keep the report available so that later troubleshooting is based on the same system information rather than the error text alone.
Check whether the failure is limited to one game
Try to identify the scope of the problem. If several Direct3D applications fail, a Windows component or graphics-driver problem becomes more plausible. If only one game fails, its own files, launch configuration, minimum requirements, or compatibility with the installed hardware may need separate investigation. The same d3d12.dll wording can therefore lead to different final fixes.
How do I fix d3d12.dll on Windows 11 or Windows 10?
Use the following order. It follows Microsoft’s supported repair sequence: update Windows, run DISM, and then run SFC. DISM should run before SFC because it can repair the component store from which protected system files are restored.
1. Install pending Windows updates and restart
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Open Windows Update (on some Windows 10 builds this is under Update & Security).
- Select Check for updates and install all applicable updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately request it, then test the game or application again.
Windows Update is both the normal delivery mechanism for DirectX on these releases and the usual online source used by DISM. If updates repeatedly fail, record the Windows Update error and continue to the repair commands rather than downloading a DLL from an unofficial site.

2. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthPress Enter and allow the operation to finish. DISM means Deployment Image Servicing and Management. With /Online, it works on the running Windows installation; /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth checks and repairs the component store. Microsoft says DISM normally obtains replacement material from Windows Update, so an internet connection can be required. The command can appear to pause at a percentage while it processes; do not close the window merely because progress is not changing quickly.
When DISM reports completion, note whether it says the restore operation completed successfully or reports an error. A successful DISM operation repairs the source SFC relies on; it does not by itself prove that every application-specific copy or configuration is correct.
3. Run System File Checker after DISM
- Keep the same administrator Command Prompt open, or reopen it with Run as administrator.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent before closing the window.
SFC (System File Checker) scans protected Windows files and can replace damaged copies using the repaired component store. Microsoft’s documented order is DISM first and SFC second; running SFC before DISM can leave it without a healthy source for replacement files.
4. Read the SFC result instead of guessing
At the end of the scan, match the message to the next action:

SFC’s “no violations” result is not a clean bill of health for a game. It only addresses protected Windows files that the scan can evaluate.
What if DISM says it cannot find the source files?
When DISM cannot obtain repair material from Windows Update, Microsoft documents using an alternate source: another working Windows installation, a network share, a USB drive, or a DVD. The source must correspond to the installed Windows version. Use a genuine Windows installation USB or Windows repair USB only when it matches the installed edition, architecture, language, and servicing generation closely enough for the repair.

The general form adds a source path and prevents DISM from trying Windows Update:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth /Source:<path> /LimitAccessReplace <path> with the actual path to the matching repair files; do not type the angle brackets. For example, the path could point to a mounted installation image or a network location, but the correct internal file path depends on the media. If you do not have media that matches the installed Windows build, obtain the correct installation media before retrying rather than forcing a mismatched source.
A mismatched source can fail because of differences in edition, architecture, language, or version. Record the DISM error code and the Windows version shown by dxdiag or Windows Settings if you need help selecting media. After DISM completes successfully, run sfc /scannow again.
How should I troubleshoot the game if Windows repairs succeed?
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the same application still reports d3d12.dll, the remaining cause may be outside the protected Windows file set.
Check the game’s requirements and installation
- Compare the game’s stated DirectX 12, Windows-version, graphics-card, and feature requirements with the PC reported by
dxdiag. - Use the game platform’s built-in file-verification or repair function if it provides one. This addresses damaged game files, not the Windows system library.
- If the failure began after moving the game or changing its launcher, undo that change or reinstall the affected application using its official installer.
These steps are application repairs; they are not substitutes for DISM and SFC when Windows itself has corrupted protected files.
Review graphics-driver and hardware support
Direct3D applications depend on a functioning graphics driver and hardware that supports the features they request. Use dxdiag to capture the display-device information and check the graphics-hardware manufacturer’s official support channel for a driver that matches your Windows edition. A driver update may be necessary even when d3d12.dll is present, but the error message alone cannot prove that the driver is the cause.

Retest after each controlled change
Restart after Windows repairs or a driver installation, then launch the same program with the same settings. Changing several components at once makes it difficult to tell whether the system-file repair, application repair, or driver change affected the result.
Should I download d3d12.dll from a DLL website?
