dafmigplugin.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a normal game dependency or Visual C++ runtime file. If Windows reports that dafmigplugin.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows itself rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The filename refers to the Device Association Framework Migration Plugin. Windows Setup and migration services use it when carrying device associations, drivers, and related configuration through an upgrade, rollback, feature update, or device migration.

Microsoft migration logs show Windows Setup loading the file through MigHost from this location:
C:WindowsSystem32migrationdafmigplugin.dll
The same logs identify the plugin with CLSID {C939EC0F-2F56-4CE8-AF56-2336596A5FA7}. That is strong evidence that this is part of Windows migration infrastructure, not a component installed by a particular game.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files. SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit system components. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit Windows directory, or replace a file simply because its filename matches.
Microsoft documentation for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 lists a related dafmigplugin.dll version, but that does not make one old version correct for every Windows build. The supplied version 6.3.9600.17031 should not be treated as a universal target.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first response |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears during Windows Setup or an upgrade | Damaged migration component or component store | Run DISM, then SFC, restart, and retry Windows Update |
File is absent from System32migration |
Missing or corrupted Windows file | Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC |
| Error started after an update or driver change | Recent system-state change | Check Windows Update, Device Manager, and System Restore |
| Windows Security shows a detection | Quarantine or a false positive | Verify the path and Microsoft signature before restoring anything |
| A launcher names the DLL while starting a program | The program may be reporting a Windows failure indirectly | Repair Windows first, then repair the named program |
regsvr32 reports an entry-point or registration error |
The wrong repair method was used | Stop registering the file manually |
| The file exists in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an app directory | Possible impostor or unwanted copy | Scan it and do not replace the Windows copy with it |
The generic messages “missing,” “not found,” and “could not be loaded” do not identify the original cause. They are often produced by software that notices a failed Windows operation. Public evidence does not establish a particular game or application that legitimately requires this file at launch.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing, corrupted, or involved in an upgrade failure. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies replacement system components. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Leave the window open until DISM finishes.
- Restart Windows after it completes.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If it reports that source files cannot be found, do not download dafmigplugin.dll from a DLL site. Use a matching Windows installation source only when you know it matches the installed edition, build, architecture, and servicing state:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with the actual trusted repair source.
Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files passed the check.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and retry the operation that produced the error.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: extract the relevant details and continue to the escalation steps below.
To save SFC details to your desktop, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Install pending Windows updates after restarting. If the error returns during the same upgrade, the issue may be in the component store or migration logs rather than a single missing file.
When manually hunting through Windows servicing files becomes repetitive, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds before any repair is applied. The free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required if DISM and SFC solve the problem.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates or use a repair reinstall
A pending update can contain the corrected migration component or the servicing changes needed to load it.

On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Retry the upgrade or migration.
On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so current repair options and update availability differ from supported Windows 11 installations.
Use Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 systems:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Keep the computer connected to power and follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. It is appropriate when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component store or when Windows Update repeatedly fails.
Do not use a repair source from a different Windows build. A mismatched source can leave the servicing system in a worse state.
Fix 3: Check the path, signature, and architecture
A familiar filename alone does not prove authenticity. Check the copy that Windows is actually using.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32migration
- Look for
dafmigplugin.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer details and confirm that the signature is valid and associated with Microsoft.
- Open the Details tab and record the file version and description.
The expected Windows location is more important than matching an old version number. A copy in Downloads, a user profile, a temporary directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves additional malware scrutiny.
You can also scan the file with Microsoft Defender:
- Right-click the file.
- Choose Show more options if necessary.
- Select Scan with Microsoft Defender.
If the file is not present in the expected directory, do not copy a similarly named file from another PC. The correct replacement must match Windows build, architecture, language, signature, and servicing state.
Fix 4: Check Defender Protection History
Defender may have quarantined the file, or it may have flagged an impostor stored outside the Windows directory.

- Review recent detections involving
dafmigplugin.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect its original file path.
Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:
- It was located in the expected Windows migration directory.
- Its Microsoft digital signature is valid.
- DISM, SFC, or Windows Setup clearly indicates that this is the required system component.
- A current Defender scan does not identify it as malicious.
If the detection came from Downloads, a temporary folder, or an application directory, do not restore it merely because the filename is familiar. Remove or quarantine the suspicious copy and repair Windows through Microsoft’s servicing tools.
Fix 5: Repair the update or device involved in the migration
Because this plugin belongs to Windows migration infrastructure, the trigger may be a failed upgrade, rollback, printer migration, or device-association change.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.

- Expand categories such as Printers, Bluetooth, Display adapters, Network adapters, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart and retry the operation.
Do not use Device Manager to replace dafmigplugin.dll. It can repair the device that triggered migration, but it does not manually install Windows migration plugins.
When checking many devices manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and identify what needs attention before installation. Its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it as an optional convenience, not as a substitute for Windows repair.
Check Windows Setup logs
For an upgrade failure, collect these files if they exist:
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.log
Also note the exact error code, Windows version, and operation that triggered the failure. Microsoft migration logs can show the plugin path and the stage at which Windows Setup failed. This is more useful than repeatedly copying DLLs into system folders.

Fix 6: Repair the application only if it clearly owns the error
dafmigplugin.dll is not documented as a normal application dependency. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears in a generic startup message.
If the error clearly names a particular launcher or application, repair that program after Windows itself passes DISM and SFC:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair if available.
If Repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. If the program is a game, verify or repair its installation through its official launcher. The program’s own reinstall is definitive only when the error is genuinely caused by that program rather than Windows Setup reporting a system failure.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not start with:
regsvr32 dafmigplugin.dll
This file is used by Windows migration infrastructure through its migration configuration. It is not a conventional application runtime DLL that users normally register by hand. regsvr32 can produce misleading messages about missing entry points, incompatible architecture, or registration failure without repairing Windows Setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsManual registration is not a substitute for DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or a repair reinstall.
If SFC cannot repair the file
First restart and run DISM again, followed by SFC. If the problem remains:
- Save the
sfcdetails.txtfile created fromCBS.log. - Record the exact Windows edition and build.
- Check whether Windows Update itself is failing.
- Use a matching repair source with DISM.
- Review
setupact.logandsetuperr.logif the problem occurs during an upgrade. - Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall when available.
If the error began directly after a driver, update, or software change, use System Restore:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Confirm the restore point and restart.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings but is not a replacement for backups. If Windows cannot boot normally, use Windows Recovery options and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options. A full reset or clean installation should be considered only after less destructive repair options fail and important files are backed up.
Why DLL download sites are a bad fix
A loose DLL from a random download site can be malicious, unsigned, built for the wrong architecture, or taken from an incompatible Windows build. Even a clean file may not fix the component-store corruption, servicing problem, or failed migration that caused the error.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Recovery, and Microsoft’s repair-install options instead. Do not overwrite the Windows copy until you have verified the source, architecture, signature, and build.
FAQ
Is dafmigplugin.dll safe?
It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component when it is in C:WindowsSystem32migration and has a valid Microsoft signature. A copy elsewhere is not automatically malware, but it requires scrutiny.
Is it part of a game or Visual C++?
No reliable evidence ties this file to a particular game or redistributable. It belongs to Windows migration and setup infrastructure.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould I copy it into System32?
No. Manual copying commonly creates architecture and version mismatches. Repair the Windows component store instead.
Should I run regsvr32?
Not as a normal fix. Windows migration loads the plugin through its setup infrastructure, not through routine manual registration.
What if the file is missing but SFC finds no problems?
The message may be coming from an upgrade log, a third-party program, or a stale reference rather than an actively missing protected file. Check the exact path, trigger, Defender history, and Windows Setup logs.
Does this affect Windows 10 and Windows 11 differently?
The migration role is similar, but available repair and update options depend on the Windows version. Windows 11 may offer the “Reinstall now” repair option through Windows Update, while Windows 10 no longer receives support after October 14, 2025.
