wsmsvc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by Windows Remote Management, not a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game-runtime file. If it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows and check WinRM configuration rather than downloading a replacement DLL from an unofficial site.
What this file actually does
The file is commonly described as WSMan Service. It supports Windows Remote Management (WinRM), Microsoft’s WS-Management technology used by PowerShell remoting and other Windows administration features. Microsoft documents the WSMan API and identifies the IIS WSMan module as:

On 64-bit Windows, architecture-specific system files are supplied for native and 32-bit applications. A 32-bit program may interact with the 32-bit system component, while native Windows processes use the 64-bit copy. The correct file must match both the Windows build and its architecture.

Common messages include:
The program can't start because wsmsvc.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because wsmsvc.dll was not found.
There was a problem starting wsmsvc.dll. The specified module could not be found.
A loader message does not prove that the named DLL alone is defective. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by wsmsvc.dll is missing.
Check the file before changing anything
1. Confirm the normal location
Open File Explorer and enter this path in the address bar:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
%WinDir%System32
Look for wsmsvc.dll.
You can also inspect it from PowerShell:
Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32wsmsvc.dll" |
Select-Object FullName,Length,VersionInfo
A normal system copy is under the Windows directory. A copy in an application folder, your user profile, a temporary folder, or a download directory deserves separate investigation. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe.
2. Check the digital signature
In the same elevated or ordinary PowerShell window, run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32wsmsvc.dll"
The result should show a valid Microsoft signature. If the file is unsigned, the signer is unexpected, or the path is outside the Windows directory, do not replace it manually. Run a security scan and continue with Windows component repair.
Do not compare your file only with a version number found online. Windows releases and cumulative updates can contain different builds, and the largest or newest-looking DLL is not automatically correct.

This is the most appropriate fix when the file is absent, damaged, or several Windows management functions are failing.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
After restarting, test the program or Windows feature that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM and SFC in the correct order
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while. Do not close the window merely because progress appears paused.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that System File Checker uses. Microsoft’s system file repair guidance explains the supported sequence.

Understand the SFC result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: the protected files appear intact. Investigate WinRM configuration, dependencies, or the application that reports the error.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still cannot repair the file, use the escalation steps below.
- DISM cannot find source files: repair may require a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft documents
/Sourceand/LimitAccessoptions in its Windows image repair documentation.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed is not useful indefinitely. Record the exact result and move to a matching repair source or repair installation if the component store remains damaged.
If you want help identifying which Windows components are damaged while you work through the manual DISM and SFC process, Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for this Microsoft repair procedure.
Fix 2: Repair WinRM configuration when the file exists
If wsmsvc.dll exists at %WinDir%System32 and has a valid Microsoft signature, the problem may be WinRM configuration rather than the file.
A typical WinRM error is:
The client cannot connect to the destination specified in the requests.
Verify that the service on the destination is running and is accepting request.
Microsoft also documents error -2144108526 (0x80338012) for this class of failure.

Restore the WinRM configuration
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
winrm invoke Restore winrm/Config
- Then run:
winrm quickconfig
- Read the confirmation message and accept the requested configuration if prompted.
- Restart the computer and test remoting again.
These commands repair WinRM configuration and its listener. They do not restore a missing or corrupt wsmsvc.dll.
For deliberate local remoting setup, open PowerShell as administrator and run:
Set-WSManQuickConfig -Force
This starts WinRM, sets it to start automatically, creates a listener, and enables the relevant firewall exception. Use it only when you intend to enable local remoting.

You can also inspect the service:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Remote Management (WS-Management).
- Check whether the service is running and whether its startup setting matches your environment.
Do not enable remoting merely to hide a DLL error. If the file itself is absent, return to DISM and SFC.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product can quarantine a legitimate system file, although you should verify the detection before restoring anything.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries involving
wsmsvc.dll. - Inspect the original path, detection name, and action.
- Restore the file only if it was the genuine Microsoft-signed copy from the Windows system directory and the event is demonstrably a false positive.
Do not create a broad exclusion for the Windows directory. If the detection appears credible, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and repair Windows using DISM and SFC. Microsoft describes this workflow in its Protection history guidance.
If the error began immediately after malware removal, prioritize a full security scan and component repair.

A 32-bit file cannot safely substitute for the 64-bit Windows component, and a file from another Windows release may be incompatible. Architecture mismatches can produce messages saying that the file is not designed to run on Windows, entry-point errors, or immediate application crashes.
Do not copy a downloaded DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application directory
The SysWOW64 name is part of Windows’ compatibility design and does not mean that you should manually choose files by guessing. Let Windows servicing restore the correct component.
If only one older program fails while Windows and WinRM work normally:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair or Reset, if offered.
- If that does not work, uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or launcher.
Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will repair wsmsvc.dll. This is a Windows component, and those runtimes are not a documented replacement for it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 5: Check Windows Update, storage, and drivers
If corruption returns after DISM and SFC, a failed servicing operation or disk problem may be involved.
First, retry Windows Update after restarting. If corruption continues, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the check for the next restart. Save your work and allow the check to complete.
Drivers are not the normal source of wsmsvc.dll, but a broader Windows management failure can follow a damaged device or storage driver. To inspect drivers:

Fix 6: Use System Restore or a Windows repair installation
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the file, and WinRM configuration commands do not help, avoid manual DLL replacement.
System Restore may return system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs to an earlier working state while preserving personal files:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore and let Windows restart.
Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
If no suitable restore point exists, use a matching Windows repair installation or Windows recovery option. Back up important files first. If repair still fails, collect:
- The Windows version and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The exact file path
- The Authenticode signature result
- The full error text
- SFC and DISM results
- The application or service producing the error
That information gives Microsoft support or an administrator enough context to diagnose the remaining component-store or dependency problem.
Why regsvr32 wsmsvc.dll is usually wrong
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a COM registration entry such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command for every DLL.
Registering wsmsvc.dll does not restore a missing file, repair the Windows component store, or rebuild a WinRM listener. It can also produce another error that obscures the original problem. Use DISM, SFC, and WinRM configuration commands for their respective jobs.
Frequently asked questions
Is wsmsvc.dll safe?
The genuine Windows copy should normally be under %WinDir%System32 and digitally signed by Microsoft. A file with the same name elsewhere is not automatically safe.
Is wsmsvc.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with WSMan and WinRM.
Should I download wsmsvc.dll?
No. Unofficial DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong Windows build, have the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the actual component problem. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or a matching Windows repair source.
Why does WinRM fail when the file is present?
The WinRM service, listener, firewall rule, or configuration may be damaged. Run winrm invoke Restore winrm/Config and winrm quickconfig, then test again.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency of wsmsvc.dll. It can also indicate an architecture mismatch or damaged Windows component. Repair Windows rather than copying another DLL.
Should I enable a Windows Feature?
Do not enable random features to address this error. WinRM configuration is handled through winrm quickconfig or Set-WSManQuickConfig; a missing system file requires component repair.
What is the definitive fix?
For a genuinely missing or damaged copy, install pending updates, restart, run DISM, then run SFC. If the file exists and is signed, focus on WinRM configuration or the particular application reporting the error.
