What you need before placing a base
Base construction is a chain of small jobs rather than one crafting action. Bring the tools that cover harvesting, ground preparation, carpentry and hardware installation before you start carrying materials to a site. A missing tool can leave a partly built wall exposed while you search for it.
Core tools
| Tool | What it does in a base build |
|---|---|
| Hatchet or axe | Chops trees for wooden logs and is used for some construction actions. |
| Shovel | Levels a foundation, places wooden logs on a fence kit and buries wooden crates. |
| Saw | Turns logs into planks, which are needed for wall and gate coverings. |
| Hammer | Drives nails for fences and other pieces; it is also required for watchtower stairs. |
| Pliers | Attaches metal wire when converting a fence into a gate. |
| Pickaxe or farming hoe | Performs some ground work, including certain plots and fence placements. |
Materials to stage
- Wooden logs and planks: logs provide the structural frame, while sawn planks form the wooden coverings.
- Nails: expect to need hundreds for a meaningful compound. Industrial areas and outhouses are commonly searched because they can contain boxes of 70 nails.
- Rope: craft it from two stacks of six rags, or from one Pile of Guts, using a knife.
- Metal wire: required for a gate.
- Combination lock: a three-dial or four-dial lock secures a gate after the wire is fitted.
- Sheet metal: reinforces wooden walls and gives them stronger protection against raiders.
Carry enough food, water and medical supplies for repeated trips. A building run often exposes you to other players for longer than a normal loot route, and abandoning a half-finished wall is a common way to lose materials.

How to build a fence, step by step
The fence is the basic wall and the starting point for a gate. The following action names are the PC wording reported by community guides; a console or Switch 2 prompt may use a different button.
- Craft the fence kit. Combine two sticks and one rope. Place the finished kit on the ground where you want the fence line.
- Prepare and add the posts. Use an axe or hatchet to obtain logs. With a shovel available, add two wooden logs to the placed fence kit. The shovel is also used to level the foundation so the posts can be positioned.
- Build the lower frame. Look at the kit and choose the prompt labeled Build Lower Frame. Hold the action until the frame is complete.
- Build the upper frame. Select Build Upper Frame and hold the action. The frame now defines the wall’s full height, but it is not yet a solid barrier.
- Install the coverings. Look at the completed frame and hold Build Wooden Coverings. Planks and nails are consumed as the wall becomes solid. Sheet metal can be used as reinforcement where you need greater resistance to raiding.
Plan the direction of every fence before starting the frame. A wall that is rotated incorrectly can leave a gap, block your own doorway or make the inside side of the fence difficult to reach for repairs. Build the outer perimeter first, then add internal divisions and storage rooms.

Logs are visible in forests and can be harvested repeatedly, but nails are usually the bottleneck. A single wall may be easy to start and hard to finish when your nail supply runs out. Search industrial structures and outhouses for 70-nail boxes, and turn spare logs into planks with the saw before beginning a long covering session. Keep a reserve of nails inside a secure interior section rather than in an unfinished outer wall.
Turning a fence into a locked gate
A gate uses a completed fence as its base. It is not a separate kit, so choose a fence position that leaves enough room to approach from both sides and to open the gate without trapping yourself.

- Finish the fence first. Build the lower and upper frames and install the coverings. A partially framed fence does not provide the completed gate interaction.
- Equip the hardware. Have metal wire and pliers ready. Look at the completed fence and select Build Gate.
- Attach the wire. The pliers install the wire and create the gate’s hinge assembly. If the gate prompt does not appear, verify that the fence is fully built and that the pliers are equipped rather than merely stored nearby.
- Fit the lock. Put a three-dial or four-dial combination lock through the gate’s inventory slot. Set a code before leaving the gate and share it only with trusted group members.
A gate is an access control, not an invulnerable wall. It can still be attacked, and a code can be guessed or observed. Place gates behind an outer fence where possible, and use an airlock—two gates with a small space between them—so a raider who gets through one barrier cannot immediately reach every storage room.
Building a watchtower
Watchtowers can reach three levels. They are useful for sight lines and for giving defenders an elevated position, but they require more planning than a simple fence because the tower footprint affects nearby walls, ladders and storage.
Construction sequence
Place a Watchtower Kit on level ground, add its required logs and other materials, then build each level in order. Stairs are built only at a Watchtower Kit and require an axe, a hammer and the specified materials. Keep the hammer in your tool set even if you are concentrating on frames; it is specifically needed for the stair work.
Material-count uncertainty
Community guides disagree about the exact watchtower quantities. One guide reports four wooden logs per level, while other guides do not provide a matching count. Because the figures conflict and can change with patches or server configuration, use the on-screen requirements at your kit as the authority and bring extra logs, planks and nails rather than relying on a fixed total.

Storage: crates, barrels and buried reserves
Storage determines whether a base remains useful after the walls are built. Put high-value items in more than one container and avoid concentrating every resource in a single room.
| Container | Capacity or feature | How to obtain or use it |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden crate | 50 slots | Craftable; a shovel can bury it. |
| Barrel | 150 slots | Usually found in industrial zones. |
Burying a crate with a shovel creates a concealed reserve away from the main structure. It is slower to access than a room full of containers, but it can preserve essential food, tools or ammunition if the visible base is raided. Mark buried locations with landmarks you can recognize without leaving an obvious trail.

Persistence is the least settled part of DayZ base building. Community sources report different timers, and the server’s configuration can override them. A flag pole also has its own reported lifespan and operating rules.
Reported timers
| Claim | What it applies to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 49 days | Flag-pole lifespan | Listed by a community wiki; the source does not establish that every server uses this value. |
| 45 days | Fences, watchtowers and tents | Community-wiki figure for ordinary persistence. |
| About 90 days | Those structures when a flag pole is used | Reported extension of the 45-day figure, not a guaranteed setting. |
| 45 days | Base structures, tents, wooden crates, the sea chest and barrels | Relayed by a Steam player as a general timer. |
| 42 days | Watchtowers and fences | Other forum reports give this value when items are not manually reviewed. |
| About 43 days | Crates near a flag pole | Single community report that conflicts with the 45/90-day claims. |
Use these numbers as a planning range, not as a promise. Community servers can set their own timers, and even official-server reports differ. Check the server rules or ask an administrator before storing a long-term stockpile.

What the flag pole is reported to do
The community wiki describes a 60-metre radius around a raised flag in which storage-container items do not despawn normally. A developer statement paraphrased in a Steam thread says that the flag refreshes object lifetimes within the current 60-metre radius; the flag lowers with each refresh tick. Another forum post reports a refresh approximately every five days. These details are second-hand community reports rather than a verified, named official quotation.
Only items inside a storage container and within the radius are covered by that description. One player reported that items outside the radius disappeared after eight hours, but that is a single anecdote and should not be treated as a universal timer. Do not leave loose high-value gear outside and assume the pole protects it.
Maintaining the pole
Raise the flag and inspect it periodically. If it has lowered, raise it again so the reported refresh cycle can continue. Keep containers physically inside the 60-metre area, and do not place a critical stash just beyond the boundary because a small measurement error can put it outside protection. On servers without a flag, regular interaction with stored items is reported to be enough to refresh them on official settings, while some servers may begin despawning base parts after only a few days.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Move inland. Sites away from the coast reduce the number of fresh spawns who pass by and are generally less visible than coastal approaches.
- Avoid traffic magnets. Major cities and military bases attract players and produce predictable movement. Building beside one gives raiders a reason to search your area.
- Stay close to water. A nearby water source supports drinking and cooking without forcing repeated, exposed trips.
- Use forest cover. Trees provide logs and sticks and can hide the building process and the finished compound.
- Keep an exit route. A base with only one doorway can become a trap during a firefight. Preserve a route to cover that does not require opening the main gate.
- Spread your risk. Maintain more than one hidden base or stash. If one location is raided, you retain tools and supplies for recovery.
Designing the interior
Use separate rooms for everyday supplies, construction materials and irreplaceable equipment. Put an airlock between the outside and the main storage area. Place the most valuable containers behind additional walls, and avoid lining every crate against one outer fence: a single breach should not expose the entire inventory.
Keep a backup stash away from the main build even if you have a flag pole. The backup should contain the minimum needed to restart—food, a basic weapon, tools, nails and a way to make more rope—rather than duplicating every item in the primary base.
Controls and platform differences
The action labels in this guide—Build Lower Frame, Build Upper Frame, Build Wooden Coverings and Build Gate—are the PC wording reported by the available guides. No console-specific control layout was verified for this guide, and Switch 2 prompts may differ as well. On another platform, look for the equivalent contextual action while aiming at the kit or fence rather than assuming the same key or button.
If a contextual option is missing, check the object state first: the kit must be placed, the two logs must be added, the relevant frame must be completed, and the required tool must be equipped. For a gate, the fence must be complete and both wire and pliers must be available. Move slightly, re-aim at the post or hinge point and try again; the interaction point can be narrower than the visible model.
Quick Recap
Common problems and practical fixes
The fence kit will not place
- Flatten the ground with a shovel and try a less uneven patch.
- Check that the kit contains two sticks and a rope.
- Move away from rocks, building foundations and other objects that may block the footprint.
The frame builds but the wall stays open
- Complete both lower and upper frames before selecting the covering action.
- Equip the saw and bring planks; logs alone do not create the wooden covering.
- Check your nail supply. Hundreds may be needed across a compound, and an empty box can stop the action without obvious visual feedback.
Build Gate is missing
- Confirm that the fence coverings are finished, not just the posts.
- Equip pliers and keep metal wire accessible.
- Stand at the hinge side or another interaction point and aim directly at the fence.
The base or stash disappeared
- Ask the server administrator which persistence values are configured; private servers can override community defaults.
- For a flag-protected stash, verify that the container was within roughly 60 metres of a raised flag.
- Do not rely on conflicting 42-, 43-, 45- or 90-day figures as guarantees. Interact with containers regularly when no flag is present.
Build-day checklist
- Choose an inland, concealed site with water, trees and more than one escape path.
- Pack an axe or hatchet, shovel, saw, hammer and knife; add pliers and a pickaxe or hoe if your design needs them.
- Collect sticks, rope, logs, planks, a large nail reserve, wire, a combination lock and optional sheet metal.
- Craft and place the fence kit using two sticks and rope.
- Add two logs, build the lower and upper frames, then install wooden coverings.
- Convert selected completed fences into gates with wire and pliers, and lock them.
- Add airlocks, internal walls and separated storage rather than one large room.
- Craft or find storage: crates hold 50 slots and barrels hold 150.
- Hide a backup stash away from the main compound.
- If you install a flag pole, keep covered containers inside its reported 60-metre radius and check the raised flag regularly.
