No-code automation means building workflows in a visual editor instead of writing every integration from scratch. A trigger starts the workflow, nodes transform or route data, and action nodes send it to another service. n8n is a fair-code workflow automation platform with visual, AI and business-process features. You can use its hosted Cloud service or run the software yourself on a virtual private server (VPS).
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click n8n, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
Cloud is the low-maintenance option. A VPS gives you control over data, networking and operating costs, but you must administer the server, Docker, credentials, updates, backups, firewall and HTTPS. The most repeatable self-hosted route is Docker with Docker Compose.

A no-code workflow is a chain of visual steps. You choose an event such as a new form submission, schedule or webhook; pass the data through nodes that filter, format or enrich it; then finish with an action such as sending a message, creating a record or calling an API. The builder handles much of the connection logic through forms and menus rather than requiring a custom application.
“No-code” describes how the workflow is assembled, not the entire operating environment. Complex workflows can still use expressions, JavaScript or HTTP requests, and a production installation still needs security and maintenance. Someone must manage user access, secrets, domains, TLS certificates, storage, updates and recovery. Treat the visual editor as an application layer, not as a replacement for system administration.

Why n8n is used for this
n8n combines a visual workflow editor with integrations, webhooks, scheduled jobs and AI-oriented nodes. A workflow can, for example, receive a game-server event, normalize its JSON payload, check a condition and post an alert to a team channel. You can keep the workflow in n8n while connecting services that do not share a native integration through an HTTP Request node.
n8n is available as a managed Cloud service or as software you operate yourself. The self-hosted Community edition is free and contains almost the complete feature set. Registering a Community edition can unlock additional features at no charge; Business and Enterprise self-hosted plans require paid subscriptions and license keys. Features and plan boundaries can change, so check n8n’s current pricing information before committing to an architecture.

Cloud or VPS: which deployment fits?
The choice is less about the workflow editor than about who carries operational responsibility. Use the following comparison before installing anything.
| Decision area | n8n Cloud | n8n on your VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Create an account and configure workflows; no server installation. | Install an operating system, Docker and Compose, configure DNS and HTTPS, then maintain the stack. |
| Infrastructure responsibility | n8n operates the hosting layer; you still manage workflow design, credentials and access. | You manage the VPS, Docker, n8n, database or storage, firewall, certificates, backups and monitoring. |
| Data control | Data is processed in the service’s hosted environment and region choices depend on the plan. | You choose the server location and control the machine, subject to your provider and legal obligations. |
| Predictable cost | A recurring n8n subscription; infrastructure administration is bundled. | VPS, storage, backups and any paid n8n plan are separate. A low server bill does not remove your maintenance time. |
| Scaling and reliability | Scaling options and platform operations are handled within the service’s limits. | You resize, add redundancy and test restores yourself. There is no universal hardware minimum; workload, execution history, concurrency and binary data determine sizing. |
| Webhooks and networking | Public endpoints are provided as part of the hosted service. | You need DNS, a reachable HTTPS endpoint and correct proxy and webhook settings. Firewalls and private services are your responsibility. |
| Support scope | Support covers the hosted product according to your plan. | You troubleshoot the operating system, provider network, Docker, proxy and n8n, in addition to your workflows. |
| Licensing considerations | Use is governed by the Cloud terms. | Community, Business and Enterprise self-hosted plans have different rights and obligations, especially when other people access the instance. |
A VPS is infrastructure, not a managed n8n service. Providers such as DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Vultr, Contabo, Linode (Akamai), UpCloud and Scaleway are examples of companies that sell VPS capacity, but the right choice depends on region, resources, backups, network features, support and renewal pricing.
What you need before self-hosting
- A VPS account with an operating system supported by your chosen Docker installation method. A current Linux distribution is the usual starting point.
- A domain name or subdomain that can point to the server’s public IP address.
- Administrative access for initial setup, plus a plan for limiting that access afterward.
- Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin installed from the provider or distribution instructions.
- A backup destination separate from the VPS, and a documented restore test.
- A decision about where execution data and credentials may be stored, including any regional or regulatory requirements.
Do not select a server by copying a supposed “minimum” specification from an unrelated deployment. A few lightweight scheduled workflows and hundreds of concurrent webhook executions have very different needs. Start with modest resources, watch CPU, memory, disk and execution duration, and resize before the host begins swapping or filling its volume.
How to self-host n8n with Docker Compose
The steps below describe a reproducible single-server installation. They are suitable for learning and for a carefully maintained small production instance; high-availability deployments require additional design.

1. Prepare the VPS and DNS
- Create the VPS in a region appropriate for your users and data policy. Apply the provider’s operating-system updates and create a non-root administrator with SSH access.
- Point a DNS A record such as
automation.example.comto the server’s public IPv4 address. Add an IPv6 record only after confirming that your firewall and proxy are configured for IPv6. - Allow SSH from trusted addresses and allow inbound HTTP and HTTPS only as needed for certificate issuance and web traffic. Keep the n8n container port private to the server.
2. Install Docker and Compose
Install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin using the official instructions for your distribution. Confirm both commands work before creating the application:
docker --version
docker compose version
Run Docker as a restricted administrator rather than exposing the daemon socket to untrusted users. Membership in the Docker group is effectively privileged access, so grant it deliberately.
3. Create persistent storage and configuration
Create a dedicated directory, for example /opt/n8n, and place a compose.yaml file there. The persistent volume is essential: without it, workflows, credentials and execution data can disappear when the container is recreated.
services:
n8n:

Use a newly generated, long random value for N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY and keep it outside public repositories. Changing it later can make existing encrypted credentials unreadable, so store it in your password manager and in your recovery documentation. Set the timezone to the one your schedules require; UTC avoids daylight-saving surprises when teams span regions.

- From the directory containing
compose.yaml, rundocker compose pullto obtain the image. - Start it with
docker compose up -d. - Check startup output with
docker compose logs -f n8n. Stop following the log withCtrl+C; the service remains running. - Confirm the process is listening locally with
docker compose ps. A healthy container is not yet a secure public deployment; the next step supplies HTTPS and access control.
5. Put an HTTPS reverse proxy in front
Use a reverse proxy or equivalent secure gateway to terminate TLS for your domain and forward traffic to 127.0.0.1:5678. Obtain a certificate from a trusted certificate authority, configure automatic renewal, and forward WebSocket traffic if your proxy requires an explicit setting. Do not publish port 5678 directly to the internet.
Set the external hostname, protocol and WEBHOOK_URL to the exact HTTPS address users and third-party services will call. A mismatch commonly causes OAuth callback failures, rejected webhook requests or links that point to an internal address.

6. Create the owner account and restrict administration
Open the HTTPS hostname, create the initial owner account and enable the strongest available authentication controls for your edition. Limit the proxy’s administrative route by IP allow-list, VPN or an identity-aware gateway where practical. Use separate n8n users and least-privilege credentials instead of sharing the owner login.
7. Establish backups and updates before production
- Back up the n8n data volume and any external database on a schedule that matches the value of your workflows.
- Keep at least one encrypted copy outside the VPS. A snapshot on the same provider is useful for fast rollback but is not a complete disaster-recovery plan.
- Record the Compose file, domain settings, encryption key, provider details and restore procedure in a protected location.
- Update deliberately: pull a tested image, recreate the service, inspect logs and run a representative workflow. Avoid unreviewed automatic major-version upgrades.
- Monitor disk usage, memory, container restarts, certificate expiry and failed executions. Execution history and binary payloads can consume storage faster than expected.
Security and reliability pitfalls
Exposing the editor without HTTPS
Credentials, session cookies and webhook data should not travel over plain HTTP. TLS is also required by many OAuth providers. Redirect HTTP to HTTPS and verify renewal before the certificate expires.
Losing the encryption key or volume
The key protects stored credentials. If the volume is deleted or the key is lost, restoring the files alone may not restore usable credentials. Test a restore on a separate instance so you know the backup contains what the recovery procedure expects.
Letting executions fill the disk
Large JSON responses, binary files and retained execution history can exhaust a small volume. Set retention appropriate to your debugging needs, move large artifacts to object storage when suitable, and alert before the disk reaches capacity.
Assuming a container update is a backup
Replacing an image changes application code, not your data protection. Keep version notes, back up first, and retain a known-good image tag or rollback plan.

Misconfiguring webhooks behind a proxy
If n8n believes its public URL is HTTP or uses the wrong hostname, generated webhook URLs and callbacks fail. Check forwarded headers, the external URL variables and the proxy’s WebSocket and timeout settings.

Can you use self-hosted n8n for client work?
Licensing depends on how clients interact with the installation. n8n’s Help Center license FAQ states: “You build and run workflows for clients on your own instance: allowed under the SUL, as long as clients only receive the outputs and have no access to n8n itself.”
That permission describes a managed service arrangement in which you operate the instance and deliver results. Giving clients direct n8n accounts, embedding the editor in your product, reselling n8n access or offering a competing automation service can require a different commercial agreement. Review the Sustainable Use License and the current Business or Enterprise terms for your exact model before signing a client contract.
Practical gaming and community examples
A self-hosted instance can coordinate tasks around a game community without exposing the automation editor to every moderator:
- A webhook from a tournament registration form can validate entries, write a roster to a database and notify organizers.
- A scheduled workflow can read server-status data, compare player counts with thresholds and alert moderators when capacity or latency changes.
- Release notes from a game studio can be filtered for platform-specific changes and delivered to a team channel.
- Support emails can be classified, stripped of sensitive fields and routed to the correct queue while preserving an audit trail.
Keep API tokens scoped to the minimum actions required, and avoid sending player personally identifiable information to services that do not need it.
Is self-hosting worth it?
Choose Cloud when you want the fastest start, do not want to run Linux and Docker, or need a support boundary that includes the hosting platform. Choose a VPS when data location, network control, customization or a predictable infrastructure bill outweighs the ongoing administration. In either case, no-code reduces integration coding; it does not remove the need to design reliable workflows, protect secrets and plan recovery.
