To play DayZ with an Xbox friend from Windows, install the Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass edition delivered through Xbox Play Anywhere—not the Steam edition. The Xbox-compatible Windows build is a separate platform version, and Bohemia Interactive describes the arrangement as “not traditional cross-play.” It can join only servers labeled Keyboard & Mouse, so both players must select that server category. Which PC edition of DayZ supports playing with Xbox friends?

Bohemia Interactive added DayZ on Microsoft Windows through Xbox Play Anywhere in Update 1.29, released April 8, 2026. The update also introduced native Xbox Series X|S support, while the FAQ says the current-generation version arrives through the update rather than as a separate application. Existing Xbox owners received the current-generation upgrade free, according to the announcement.

Can Steam DayZ play with Xbox?
No documented Steam-to-Xbox connection is available. Steam DayZ uses the standard PC server ecosystem, whereas the Xbox-compatible Windows installation uses the Xbox platform version. If joining an Xbox friend is the requirement, the PC player should install the Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass build instead of changing network settings on Steam.

The Steam page identifies these figures as part of its 2021 listing. A computer meeting them can run the listed PC edition, but hardware compliance does not make Steam a cross-platform Xbox client.
Why can’t I see the same DayZ server as my Xbox friend?
Start by treating a Steam/Xbox pairing as an unsupported edition combination, not as a router problem. If the PC copy is on Steam, install or access the Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass Xbox build before changing firewall or port settings.

- Entitlement: confirm that the Microsoft account launching the PC game has PC Game Pass or the relevant Microsoft Store/Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement.
- Platform accounts: ensure the Xbox friend request and in-game account identity are using the intended Microsoft accounts.
Does the Xbox-compatible PC version support mods?
No. The Xbox-related PC build does not support modding. If custom servers, Steam Workshop downloads, or the broader PC mod ecosystem are essential, use Steam and play within the standard PC environment; that choice does not provide the documented Xbox connection.

Is voice chat missing on the Microsoft Store version?
Bohemia’s FAQ says Microsoft account age verification controls VOIP on the Microsoft Store version. A missing voice channel can therefore result from the account’s age-verification status rather than from a failed PC-to-Xbox pairing. Check the Microsoft account’s age settings and any required verification before assuming the server connection is broken.
