The one current exception is the Microsoft Store/Xbox PC build, which uses Xbox Play Anywhere and can play with an Xbox-console friend on a Keyboard & Mouse server. If you and a friend are on incompatible builds, no restart or server filter can create a connection; you must first move to a supported ecosystem.
If your platforms should be compatible, work through build identity, input restrictions, update and branch parity, maintenance, account access, and Battleye status in that order. The sequence below separates a failed friend join from a problem affecting one server or the entire browser.

What DayZ crossplay actually supports
The word “PC” is not enough to identify a DayZ multiplayer ecosystem. Steam DayZ and the Microsoft Store/Xbox version are different builds with different console relationships. The same is true of PlayStation and Xbox editions. Use the build, store and platform combination in this table before changing settings.

Bohemia Interactive’s current FAQ describes the Microsoft Store/Xbox PC version as running the Xbox build through Xbox Play Anywhere. That does not turn DayZ into a universal crossplay game: it supplies a limited PC-to-Xbox path and does not connect PlayStation players. A PC friend who owns DayZ on Steam must use the Microsoft Store/Xbox build instead if the other player is on Xbox.

Start by identifying the exact build
Steam PC
Open the Steam library entry and confirm that the game is the Steam edition. A Windows computer does not automatically mean Xbox compatibility. Steam’s Stable and Experimental branches are also separate client states; the branch is relevant after ecosystem compatibility has been established.
Microsoft Store or Xbox app on PC
Confirm that the installed game is the Microsoft Store/Xbox version covered by Xbox Play Anywhere, and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns or has access to that entitlement. This is the PC build that can target Xbox-console players. It is not interchangeable with a Steam installation, even when both are installed on the same computer.
Xbox console
Check that the console player is launching the Xbox edition and is signed in to the Xbox account with access to the game and multiplayer services. When joining a PC friend, that friend must be on the Microsoft Store/Xbox build and the selected server must permit Keyboard & Mouse play.
PlayStation
PlayStation players remain in the PlayStation ecosystem. If the other player is on Xbox or Steam, the failed join is an unsupported platform combination rather than a server-browser fault.
Fix a failed friend join
Use these steps when a friend can see or join other servers but cannot join the target session, or when the two of you cannot see one another’s intended server.

- Write down each player’s platform and store. Record Steam PC, Microsoft Store/Xbox PC, Xbox console or PlayStation. If one player is on Steam and the other is on Xbox, stop here: Steam-to-Xbox play is not supported. The PC player must install and launch the Microsoft Store/Xbox build for the limited Xbox route.
- Confirm that the target server accepts the PC input method. Microsoft Store/Xbox PC players have access to Keyboard & Mouse servers. An Xbox player and a PC player should select a server that supports that input category. A controller-only target is not an equivalent destination for the Keyboard & Mouse crossplay route.
- Match the game update. Install the current update on both clients. Fully quit DayZ rather than leaving it suspended, relaunch it, and refresh the server browser. Bohemia’s multiplayer guidance specifically recommends restarting and manually checking for updates when servers are missing.
- Check Steam branch selection when Steam is involved. In Steam, open the DayZ library entry, choose Properties, then BETAs. Select the branch that matches the server. Most servers run the latest Stable version; an Experimental client normally cannot join a Stable target, and a Stable client cannot join an Experimental target unless the server is running that same branch and build.
- Sign in to the owning account. Use the account that owns the relevant edition or has the valid subscription entitlement. Switching Windows, Steam or Xbox profiles can leave the game running under an account without multiplayer access even though the installation is present.
- Verify that platform services are online. Steam or Xbox services must be connected for authentication and server discovery. If the platform reports an outage or the account is working offline, restore that service connection before diagnosing the DayZ server.
- Check voice-chat eligibility separately. On the Microsoft Store version, VOIP is tied to Microsoft’s age-verification requirement. Without the required verification, voice chat is blocked. That restriction does not itself explain an incompatible platform pair, but it can make a successful crossplay session appear broken when the real symptom is missing voice communication.
- Try a second compatible server. If both players can see and enter another server, the original target is likely full, password-protected, whitelisted, unavailable or experiencing a provider-side problem. Contact or check the status page for that server’s provider rather than changing platform settings.
When one server is missing but others appear
A single missing server usually points to the server itself, its access rules or a version mismatch. Compare the symptoms before making changes.

Do not infer a global crossplay failure from one named server. A community server can disappear because it is full, private, password-protected, whitelisted or temporarily offline. Generic DayZ support information cannot establish the live status of a particular server, so use that provider’s own status information.
Stable and Experimental version mismatches
Steam exposes DayZ’s Stable and Experimental branches under Library > DayZ > Properties > BETAs. They are separate test tracks, not merely optional graphics settings. A server running Stable expects a matching Stable client, while an Experimental server expects the corresponding Experimental build. The game can be fully updated and still reject a join if the branch differs.
Make both clients match
- Ask which branch the server administrator or listing identifies.
- On each Steam account, open the DayZ properties and inspect the BETAs tab.
- Select the required branch and allow Steam to finish downloading or validating files.
- Launch DayZ again and refresh the browser after the branch change.
- If the target remains unavailable, test a server known to run the same branch. This distinguishes a local download problem from a server that has not updated.
Most public servers use the latest version, according to Bohemia Interactive’s support guidance. Experimental builds can therefore have fewer matching servers, and a server operator may need time to update after a game release. Do not attempt to bypass a branch mismatch with Battleye filters or repeated reconnects; the client and server must be compatible first.
Scheduled maintenance and empty server lists
Bohemia Interactive’s multiplayer support says scheduled maintenance normally occurs on Wednesdays at 08:00 GMT+1. During that window, an empty or incomplete browser can be an expected service condition rather than evidence that your account or installation is damaged.

- Note the time in GMT+1 and compare it with your local time, including any daylight-saving difference.
- Fully quit DayZ and relaunch it after maintenance is expected to finish.
- Manually check for a game update before opening the browser again.
- Refresh the list and try an official server.
- If the browser remains empty outside maintenance, check Steam/Xbox service availability and contact Bohemia Interactive support.
Maintenance timing is a published normal schedule, not a guarantee that every outage occurs only then. Emergency work, platform outages and server-provider incidents can happen at other times. Treat the Wednesday window as a first check, not as proof of the cause.
Accounts, entitlements and VOIP
Crossplay requires both technical compatibility and entitlement to the relevant build. A PC can contain multiple DayZ installations, and a console can have several profiles, so verify the account rather than assuming the device determines access.
- Steam: launch the Steam edition from the Steam account that owns it, and keep Steam online for authentication and server discovery.
- Microsoft Store/Xbox PC: use the Microsoft account that owns the Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement or has valid access through the applicable subscription, and make sure the Xbox services account is connected.
- Xbox console: use the Xbox profile with game and multiplayer access. A different local profile may launch the title but fail when joining a protected or entitlement-checked session.
- PlayStation: remain within the PlayStation multiplayer ecosystem; changing the Microsoft or Steam account cannot add Xbox or PC crossplay.
Microsoft’s age-verification requirement affects VOIP on the Microsoft Store version. If the game session works but voice chat does not, complete the required verification on the Microsoft account and restart the game. Voice eligibility is a separate check from whether the server is visible.

Battleye is an anti-cheat service, and Battleye global bans are administered by Battleye rather than Bohemia Interactive. A ban or anti-cheat failure can prevent a client from joining protected servers, but it does not alter the platform crossplay rules.
The server browser can be filtered to show non-Battleye servers. Changing that filter may help determine whether the problem is limited to Battleye-protected targets, but it cannot make Steam connect to Xbox or PlayStation. If non-Battleye servers work while protected servers reject the connection, follow Battleye’s appeal or support process; do not treat the filter as a crossplay switch.

Friend join versus single-server failure
Use this comparison to choose the shortest diagnostic path.

Common incorrect fixes
Installing Steam on the Xbox player’s PC
Installing the Steam edition on a Windows computer does not create Xbox compatibility. For an Xbox friend, the PC participant needs the Microsoft Store/Xbox build described by Xbox Play Anywhere.

Changing the Battleye filter
The filter only changes which anti-cheat categories are displayed. It cannot bridge Steam, Xbox and PlayStation ecosystems.
Assuming a full update guarantees entry
Update parity is necessary but not sufficient. A Stable client can still fail against an Experimental server, and a compatible client can still be rejected by a password, whitelist, full capacity, maintenance event or provider outage.
Repeating reconnects during maintenance
When the global browser is empty during the published maintenance period, repeated launches are unlikely to help. Wait for the window to end, restart, check updates and test an official server.
Prevention checklist
- Record whether each player uses Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox PC, Xbox console or PlayStation before planning a session.
- For PC-to-Xbox play, install the Microsoft Store/Xbox build and choose a Keyboard & Mouse-compatible server.
- Keep both clients updated and avoid switching Steam branches immediately before a scheduled session.
- After an update or branch change, fully quit DayZ and refresh the browser.
- Keep Steam or Xbox services online and use the account that owns the game or subscription entitlement.
- Complete Microsoft age verification if VOIP is required on the Store version.
- Save the community server’s password, whitelist status and provider-status page before attempting to join.
- Check Wednesday maintenance at 08:00 GMT+1 when the browser is unexpectedly empty.
- Treat Battleye bans as an anti-cheat matter handled by Battleye, not as a crossplay setting.
When to contact support
Contact Bohemia Interactive support after restarting, checking updates, confirming branch and account, testing another compatible server and ruling out scheduled maintenance. Include your platform and store build, Stable or Experimental branch, exact server name, whether other servers are visible, the time of the failure, and any Battleye or entitlement message. For a community server that alone is unavailable, contact its provider first because generic DayZ support cannot verify that server’s live status.
