DayZ mod failures usually belong to one of two separate paths. If Steam cannot download or activate a Workshop item, repair Steam’s download state and verify the DayZ installation. If a dedicated server starts without a mod, or players are kicked when they connect, check the -mod= and -servermod= parameters, folder paths, dependency order, .bikey files, version alignment and server logs. Start with the server running with no mods, then add the framework and other mods incrementally; that clean baseline is the quickest way to identify a bad download, path, dependency or conflict.
The right fix depends on where the failure occurs: download, launcher activation, server startup or connection authentication. Use the symptom tables and ordered procedures below instead of repeatedly reinstalling every mod.

What kind of DayZ mod failure are you seeing?
“Mods not loading” can describe several different faults. Identify the layer first, because a Steam cache repair will not fix a missing server key, and changing a launch parameter will not repair a Workshop download that never completed.
| Symptom | Likely layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| A Workshop item is queued, paused or stuck at 100% | Steam download state | Open Steam Downloads, restart Steam and clear the download cache if necessary. |
| The launcher shows a mod as unavailable or out of date | Client Workshop registration | Let pending updates finish, then resubscribe to the affected item. |
| The server starts but reports missing addons or never loads a mod | Launch path or dependency order | Check -mod=, the mod’s addons directory and load order. |
| Players receive “Modified data” or signature errors | Keys or client/server file mismatch | Copy current .bikey files and make the client and server versions match. |
| The server crashes or scripts fail after a mod is added | Conflict, version or dependency problem | Read the RPT and script logs, then isolate the collection in smaller groups. |
| A community server is absent from the browser | Server status or platform browser | Check the administrator and query port before changing local mod files. |
Keep a note of whether the error appears before joining, during connection, or after the mission loads. That timing tells you whether to work on the client, the dedicated server or both.

How do I fix DayZ Workshop mods that will not download?
Repair Steam’s download state first, then verify DayZ, and only afterward remove and redownload the single affected Workshop item. This order preserves working mods and avoids deleting a large collection unnecessarily.
1. Finish or restart the Steam download
- Open Steam and select Downloads.
- Allow any queued DayZ Workshop update to finish. A mod can appear installed while an update is still pending.
- If the item is paused, stale or repeatedly returning to the queue, restart Steam and check the Downloads page again.
- When the launcher reports that a mod is out of date, restart Steam or clear the launcher’s cached state before trying to join the server again.
Do not launch the server or repeatedly resubscribe while Steam is still processing the same update. Multiple interrupted registrations can leave the Workshop item present but incomplete.
2. Check storage and the Workshop directory
Confirm that the drive containing Steam and DayZ has free space for both the update and its temporary files. Inspect the DayZ Workshop location:
Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent221100
The numeric subfolders are Workshop IDs. An item that has no usable files beneath its numeric folder is not ready for the server, even if Steam’s library page still shows the subscription.
3. Clear Steam’s download cache when the item is stuck
Use Steam’s download-cache reset, let Steam restart, and then resubscribe to the affected Workshop item. If the transfer stalls again, changing Steam’s download region is a reasonable next step. These actions repair the transfer session; they do not correct a bad server launch path or a missing signature key.

Use Steam’s file-verification command for DayZ before deleting local folders or reinstalling. The official DayZ troubleshooting FAQ, posted by ImpulZ (identified there as a DayZ Producer) on June 20, 2018, states: “Before trying any other solutions, try to verify your game files via Steam.” Verification repairs the base installation and should be completed even when the visible error mentions a mod.
5. Remove and redownload only the affected item
- Unsubscribe from the specific Workshop item.
- Wait for Steam to register the change and stop any related download.
- Back up server-side configuration, missions and mod links before deleting anything.
- Remove the affected numeric folder under
steamappsworkshopcontent221100. - Subscribe again and wait for the complete download before starting the server.
Do not erase the entire Workshop directory as a first measure. A full deletion turns one uncertain item into a collection-wide redownload and can destroy a server’s carefully maintained copy or junction.

6. Test a collection one item at a time

Once the missing item is identified, check its current Workshop page and documentation for a replacement, required framework or changed installation instructions.
Does installing DayZ on an SSD fix mods that do not load?
An SSD can reduce disk-loading delays and stutter when a large mod pack is being read. EFD Guides describes hard-drive loading as a common cause of stutter and recommends an SSD for mod-pack loading. Storage speed does not, however, fix an incorrect -mod= path, a missing PBO, a dependency loaded in the wrong order, a missing .bikey or a client/server version mismatch.

Treat an SSD as an optional performance improvement after the files and configuration are correct. Moving the game without updating the server’s paths can create a new “Cannot open” error, so update every shortcut, service definition and launch script that points to the old location.
How should I configure -mod= and -servermod=?
Put mods that clients must download in -mod=. Put server-only logic in -servermod=. The parameters are not interchangeable: placing a client-required content mod in -servermod= prevents clients from receiving it, while asking players to install server-only logic creates unnecessary mismatch risk.
Use a valid, ordered launch line
Paths are separated with semicolons and are normally relative to the dedicated server root. Dependencies must appear before the mods that require them. A typical launch shape is:
DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=profiles -mod=@CF;@MyMod -servermod=@MyServerLogic
The names in this example are placeholders for the folders you actually maintain; the important details are the parameter names, semicolon separators and dependency order.
Check every folder, not just the parameter text
- Confirm that each named folder exists beneath the server root or at the exact path used by your launcher.
- Open the folder and confirm it contains an
addonsdirectory with the expected PBO files. - Do not point
-mod=directly at a numeric Workshop folder unless your launcher and path strategy explicitly support it. A named junction or copy such as@CFis the documented pattern. - Keep folder names consistent. A one-character difference between the launch line and the directory is enough to make the mod invisible.
- Avoid spaces in mod folder names unless the entire parameter is quoted in the form required by your launcher.
A path that exists but contains only partially downloaded files is functionally the same as a missing path. Compare the folder’s contents with the Workshop download and stop the server before replacing files.

How do I deploy Workshop content to a dedicated server?
SteamCMD uses DayZ App ID 221100 and the individual mod’s Workshop ID. The documented workflow downloads content into:
steamappsworkshopcontent221100<WorkshopID>
After downloading, create a consistent named junction or copy, for example @CF, and reference that name in -mod=. The exact junction command depends on your Windows permissions and deployment script, so the critical requirement is that the named path always points to the current Workshop files.
Choose one path strategy and keep it current
Do not sometimes launch from the numeric Workshop directory and sometimes launch from an older copied folder. That split allows SteamCMD to update one location while the server continues reading another. Record which source each @ModName points to, update it deliberately, and restart the server after replacing the files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When a mod update changes its folder contents, stop the server first. Copy the new files, update the named link or copy, refresh keys, and only then start the server. This prevents a running process from reading a mixture of old and new PBOs.
Why do players get “Modified data” or signature-verification kicks?
Signed mods require their public key files on the server. Copy every required .bikey from the mod’s keys directory into the dedicated server’s root keys directory. A missing or stale key can cause a signature kick even when the mod’s PBO files are present.
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Open each installed mod and locate its
keysdirectory. - Copy the current
.bikeyfiles into the server root’skeysdirectory. - Remove obsolete keys only when you are certain no active mod still requires them.
- Restart the server and have a client reconnect with the same mod version.
Updating only the server’s PBOs or only the client’s Workshop copy is a common cause of “Modified data.” Treat a mod update as one operation: update the server files, copy the new keys, and ensure clients receive the matching release.
How do I fix DayZ mod version mismatches?
Every client-required mod must be present in a compatible version on both sides. Updating the server while a player still has an older Workshop copy, or updating a client before the server, can produce mismatch or signature errors. Ask players to complete Steam’s pending Workshop updates before troubleshooting launch parameters.

Server-only mods belong in -servermod= and should not be downloaded by players. If a mod contains both client content and server logic, follow its own documentation: the client portion belongs in -mod=, while only the explicitly server-only portion belongs in -servermod=.
How do dependencies and load order affect startup?
Read each mod’s Workshop page or documentation for required addons. If a mod declares a framework such as CF in requiredAddons[], load that framework first. The working pattern is:
-mod=@CF;@MyMod
Reversing the order can produce missing classes, startup errors or a crash because the dependent mod is parsed before the addon it expects exists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a dependency-first checklist
- List the framework and library mods required by each content mod.
- Place the framework or library earlier in
-mod=. - Keep unrelated server-only utilities in
-servermod=unless their documentation says clients need them. - After changing order, start with the smallest possible set and inspect the logs before restoring the full collection.
Do not assume alphabetical order is safe. Dependencies are defined by the mod’s configuration, not by its folder name.
Which DayZ logs show why a mod failed?
Logs are more reliable than repeated reinstalls. The server’s profiles directory contains script_*.log and DayZServer_x64_*.RPT files. BattlEye logs are in the server’s BattlEye directory and show kick and ban events.
| Log message | What it usually means | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
Missing addons |
A dependency is absent or loaded too late. | Required addons, framework presence and -mod= order. |
Signature verification failed or Modified data |
A key is missing or stale, or client and server files differ. | Current .bikey files and exact mod versions on both sides. |
Cannot open |
A PBO, config, mission or path cannot be found. | Folder spelling, addons contents, permissions and the active launch directory. |
Cannot register |
Two mods collide on a class name. | The last mod added, duplicate frameworks and conflicting versions. |
SCRIPT (E) |
A script error, often caused by a mod bug or load-order/version conflict. | The named class and method, then the mod that supplied them. |
Search the script logs for SCRIPT (E) and the RPT for the exact phrases above. Capture the first occurrence and the lines immediately before it; later errors are often consequences of the original failure.
How can I isolate a bad mod in a large collection?
Use a zero-mod baseline, then add content in controlled batches. This is faster and safer than changing several paths and versions at once.

- Stop the server and remove all client-required mods from the launch line, leaving a known-good vanilla configuration.
- Start the server and confirm that it reaches the normal startup state without mod errors.
- Add the required framework only, such as the framework named by your collection’s documentation.
- Start again and read the RPT and script logs.
- Add one mod at a time for a small collection. For a large collection, add roughly half of the remaining mods, test, and then narrow the failing half.
- When the failure returns, compare the last added group’s dependencies, PBO paths, keys and versions.
Keep a written list of each launch line and result. A mod that works alone but fails in a group is usually exposing a dependency, duplicate class or version interaction rather than a download problem.
What should I do if the DayZ server list is empty?
An empty browser is not automatically a mod failure. Bohemia Interactive’s support FAQ schedules Wednesday maintenance for 08:00 GMT+1 and advises contacting support if the browser remains unavailable afterward.
If only one community server is missing, ask its administrator whether it is online and whether its query port is responding. Do not delete Workshop folders or alter your mod set until the server’s status has been confirmed; a server that is offline cannot be restored by client-side repairs.
Which fix should I try first?
| Situation | Preferred action | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|
| Download paused or stuck | Steam Downloads, restart Steam, clear cache, then change region if needed. | Low risk; no mod files need to be deleted. |
| DayZ files may be damaged | Verify game files through Steam. | Low risk; Steam restores official files. |
| One Workshop item is corrupt | Unsubscribe, remove only its numeric folder, resubscribe. | Moderate; back up server-side files first. |
| Server says missing addons | Check paths, PBOs and dependency order. | Reversible configuration change. |
| Players are kicked for modified data | Refresh keys and align client/server versions. | Reversible, but requires a coordinated restart. |
| Unknown failure in a large pack | Start with zero mods and add one or half a group at a time. | Time-consuming but preserves evidence. |
What should you check before declaring the server fixed?
- Steam has no pending DayZ or Workshop updates.
- The affected Workshop folder contains the expected
addonsand PBO files. - The launch line uses
-mod=for client-required content and-servermod=for server-only logic. - Every path is valid from the server’s actual root and uses semicolons between entries.
- Frameworks and other dependencies load before the mods that require them.
- Current
.bikeyfiles are in the server root’skeysdirectory. - Client and server have compatible versions of every client-required mod.
- The RPT, script and BattlEye logs are free of the corresponding error.
- A clean baseline has been tested before the complete collection is restored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete the whole DayZ Workshop folder to force a clean install?
Usually no. Delete only the numeric folder for the item that failed, after backing up server configuration and confirming the server is stopped. Removing the entire directory creates a large redownload and can erase a working local copy that your launch links still reference.
Can a DayZ server start even when one mod is missing?
It can sometimes reach the executable’s startup stage while failing later when a mission or script calls the missing addon. Treat a partial start as evidence to inspect the RPT and script logs, not as proof that every mod loaded.
Why does a mod work on a test server but not on my production server?
The two servers may use different working directories, copied Workshop versions, launch parameters or key folders. Compare the active command line and the actual PBO and key locations rather than comparing only the visible mod names.
Should I update all DayZ mods at once?
A coordinated update is safer for a live server only when you can update clients, server files and keys together. For troubleshooting, update one mod or one dependency group at a time so the first new log error identifies the change that caused it.
