The revised announcement said eligible players would retain those legacy options, and that users with both digital Player’s Handbooks could choose between the 2014 and 2024 sources when creating characters.
What D&D Beyond originally planned
As the 2024 core rulebooks approached, Wizards of the Coast outlined how D&D Beyond would handle the new rules alongside earlier material. The initial approach would update certain spells and magic items to their 2024 versions, leaving the 2014 entries unavailable on character sheets unless players made homebrew copies.
In its report on the proposal, Gizmodo reproduced the original changelog’s workaround: “If you wish to use the old version of a magic item or spell that has been replaced by its 2024 counterpart,” players would need to create a homebrew copy and enable homebrew content on their character sheet before adding it. The report said this would apply whether or not a player had bought the 2024 Player’s Handbook. Gizmodo’s August 26, 2024 report described the proposal and the response to it.
What changed in the August 26 update
D&D Beyond’s updated changelog acknowledged the criticism and changed course. D&D Studio wrote: “We misjudged the impact of this change, and we agree that you should be free to choose your own way to play.” The official D&D Beyond changelog described the announcement-era policy as follows:

What the announcement said about existing character sheets
The update said existing sheets would not be changed apart from relabeling and renaming. Its examples included “Races to Species,” “Inspiration to Heroic Inspiration,” and “Cast Spell to Magic.” These were examples of the stated plan in 2024, not a guarantee about every present-day screen or account.
What the reversal does—and does not—establish
The correction addressed D&D Beyond’s digital handling of 2014 legacy spells, magic items, and other player options during the 2024 rules transition. It did not mean that all 2014 rules were being deleted, nor did the announcement say players had to buy the 2024 book to keep using 2014 content.
