What D&D monster content is free?
The free resource is the fifth-edition System Reference Document, or SRD. Wizards describes it as a rules reference for creators, not a digital copy of the Monster Manual. Its current official page offers SRD v5.2.1 and says the material can be referenced to publish content under Creative Commons. See the official SRD download and FAQ.

SRD 5.2 updated rules to reflect the 2024 revised core rules. Its monster material includes stat blocks and names drawn from the Monster Manual, and the current FAQ lists 17 monsters added in SRD 5.2. Examples include Bugbear Stalker, Goblin Boss, Swarm of Crawling Claws, Troll Limb, and Vampire Familiar. These are selected inclusions, not the whole bestiary.

Wizards’ 2024 Monster Manual listing describes the paid book as a revised and expanded fifth-edition volume. The SRD is useful for consulting permitted game rules or building compatible work, but it does not provide all of the book’s monsters or replace the book as a complete reference.

What the SRD leaves out
The SRD is not a complete reproduction of D&D’s settings, lore, or brand. Wizards’ 2024 announcement says the SRD would not include lore references, and the current FAQ notes that some content is omitted, naming the Beholder as an example. The document is designed as a foundation for original compatible work rather than a way to use every recognizable D&D element.
That distinction matters for players and creators alike: a monster’s presence in the paid book does not mean its name, lore, or stat block is necessarily included in the SRD. Check the actual SRD and its FAQ rather than assuming a familiar creature or setting detail is covered.

Can creators publish SRD material?
SRD v5.2 is offered under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license (CC-BY-4.0). Wizards says creators may use the covered base-game rules in compatible products, including commercial publications, provided they meet the license’s attribution requirements. Read the license and the official SRD FAQ before publishing; the SRD is not blanket permission to use all D&D trademarks, setting lore, or excluded content.

For work set in Forgotten Realms or other D&D settings, Wizards identifies DMsGuild as a separate publishing route. That is distinct from using SRD rules under Creative Commons, and creators should consult the relevant platform terms and policies for the material they intend to use.
