DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT launched on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Amazon Luna on November 7, 2024—one day before the fifth anniversary of the original game’s PlayStation 4 debut. The timing is clear; the official announcements do not say why the Xbox release took five years.
What launched on Xbox—and when
KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS and 505 Games announced the Xbox, Windows PC and Amazon Luna release on November 7, 2024. It was DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT, the expanded edition, not a new sequel or the original 2019 PS4 release. The studio described the edition as the definitive experience, with added character action, extended storylines through new missions and the Social Strand System. KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS’ launch announcement also noted the original game debuted on PS4 on November 8, 2019.
That puts the Xbox launch immediately before the original game’s fifth anniversary. The dates support the anniversary connection, but they do not establish a contractual exclusivity period or explain the business reason for the delay.
Why did the Xbox release take five years?
The official launch material reviewed does not give a specific reason. It says the Director’s Cut became available in time for the fifth anniversary; chronology alone is not evidence of an exclusivity agreement or its duration. The most accurate answer is that the timing is documented, but the cause is not established by these announcements.

How players could access it
The 2024 announcement named three platforms, with different access models. Xbox Wire called the Xbox and Windows release an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Xbox Wire’s launch article described the Social Strand System as an online feature where players can encounter structures and signs left by others without meeting face to face, and also highlighted photo mode.

The later Game Pass announcement also said the Xbox version received a handheld-optimization update, including for ASUS ROG Xbox Ally devices. Subscription tiers and catalogue availability are time-sensitive, so check the relevant service for current access.

What Director’s Cut adds
Beyond its added missions and character action, the studio’s product description points to the Social Strand System, which connects players indirectly through shared-world traces. The January 2026 Game Pass announcement lists further Director’s Cut additions: a Ruined Factory location, cargo catapults and ramps for deliveries, extra melee moves, the Maser Gun, a firing range, a racetrack and Buddy Bots. In its November 2024 announcement, KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS reported that more than 19 million players worldwide had played DEATH STRANDING. That is the publisher’s reported figure, not an independently audited count. The anniversary announcement tied the Xbox release to the original game’s fifth anniversary.
