Deck of Haunts is worth playing if you want a systems-first horror roguelite in which room layout matters as much as card selection. Its strongest runs turn the mansion into a machine: you funnel intruders through rooms, build tension, then combine traps, monsters and haunt cards to break their health or sanity before they reach the Heart. The concept is distinctive and the PC version is generally well received, but limited meta-progression, light storytelling and awkward console controls—especially on Switch 2—keep it from being an unqualified recommendation.
What is Deck of Haunts?
Deck of Haunts is a single-player strategy and deckbuilding game from Mantis, published by DANGEN Entertainment and Game Source Entertainment. The Steam version released on May 7, 2025. You play the haunted house itself, luring people into cursed corridors, manipulating their fears, draining their essence and expanding the mansion.

The central objective is to protect the Heart room for 28 nights. Each run alternates between daytime construction and nighttime attacks, so a good deck cannot compensate for a badly designed floor plan.
How does the Deck of Haunts deckbuilder work?
Every night gives you three action points in the reviewed PC ruleset. You draw haunt cards and spend those points to damage intruders, reduce sanity, raise tension, lock or move rooms, place traps, apply hexes or create effects that last for the night.

Humans have separate health and sanity meters. Reducing either meter removes that visitor as a threat. Tension is the key multiplier: frightening someone first increases the damage dealt by later sanity effects, allowing inexpensive cards to become lethal when timed correctly.
Health, sanity and tension
- Health: physical damage and monsters reduce this meter.
- Sanity: drains and fear effects reduce it; reaching zero removes the intruder.
- Tension: amplifies sanity damage, rewarding sequences that build fear before a final drain.
Essence from dead or insane visitors pays for new rooms and upgrades. That creates a feedback loop: surviving nights gives you resources to redesign the house, while a more efficient layout makes future essence easier to earn.
Why does mansion layout matter so much?
The mansion is both your base and the board on which every card is evaluated. Distance from the Heart determines how much time you have, while room size, special-room powers, traps and monster patrol routes decide whether intruders arrive weakened or untouched.
A narrow route can concentrate several visitors for area effects, but an overly direct path may let a dangerous specialist reach the Heart before your hand improves. Conversely, a long maze buys turns but can spread enemies across rooms and make single-target cards inefficient. The best designs deliberately route people through rooms that amplify your chosen deck.

Construction decisions that pay off
- Place high-impact rooms where visitors must pass through them rather than at the edge of the map.
- Use locked doors and route changes to delay specialists who can open or bypass them.
- Align monster patrols with choke points so a card effect and a physical attack land in the same area.
- Upgrade rooms that support your win condition instead of buying every available option.
How do intruders change over a run?
Early visitors are manageable, but later nights introduce enemies with traits that invalidate simple plans. Reviews cite pathfinders, police officers, occultists, priests and Stone Masons. Some can open locked doors, resist sanity damage or locate the Heart more directly, forcing you to read the threat rather than follow one repeating combo.
This escalation is where the strategy becomes meaningful. A build that relies entirely on fear can stall against resistance, while a physical-damage deck may struggle to stop a fast pathfinder. You must balance immediate removal with cards and rooms that control movement.

What are the best parts of Deck of Haunts?
Architecture and cards reinforce each other
The game’s clearest success is that the house feels like a weapon, not a passive backdrop. The most satisfying turns come from funneling visitors into a room whose effect boosts a carefully timed drain, trap or monster attack.
Tension creates strong tactical moments
WayTooManyGames singled out the tension system because small fear effects can accumulate into a decisive break. You are often choosing between killing a visitor now and setting up a stronger sanity finish one action later.

Atmosphere supports the mechanics
Reviewers describe unsettling card art, screams, rattling doors and a menacing soundtrack. Softpedia calls the mansion a playground of death and insanity, while also noting that card text clearly explains effects. The presentation is dark and readable on PC, even when the interface becomes cramped on console.
What keeps Deck of Haunts from being a great recommendation for everyone?
Meta-progression can run thin
Later runs retain unlocks such as cards, decks, rooms, missions, totems, difficulty settings and Nightmare mode. However, Softpedia and other reviews say the progression may feel limited after a few successful runs. Critics disagree about how much replay value those unlocks provide, particularly once you have found a reliable build.

The premise is strong, but this is primarily a systems game. If you expect a character-driven horror campaign, extensive lore or a tightly scripted narrative, the focus on repeated runs and optimization may feel spare.
Console interfaces create friction
Switch 2 reviews report no touchscreen support, tiny icons, awkward room and card designation, and floating cards that make selections harder to read. One review also describes occasional runs that failed to advance after all humans were defeated. These issues do not define the PC version, but they matter when choosing where to play.

Does Deck of Haunts run well on Switch 2?
The Switch 2 version is attractive for portability, but it is not the safest choice for players who prioritize precise input or a clean interface. In TV mode, Hey Poor Player reported that Joy-Con controls would not switch categories with L/R; the reviewer said a Pro Controller fixed that problem in their setup. Treat that as a useful workaround, not a guarantee for every console configuration.
WayTooManyGames gave the console experience a much harsher assessment than the PC consensus, citing control and glitch concerns. If you choose Switch 2, plan to use a controller with full shoulder-button access and expect more interface compromise than on a mouse-driven PC.
Which version should you buy?
| Version | Best for | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| PC/Steam | Players who value precise selection and experimentation | Windows 10 minimum; 8 GB RAM, 3 GB VRAM and 2 GB storage listed by Steam. The interface is generally easier to manage with a mouse. |
| Switch 2 | Portable play | No touchscreen support reported; small icons and room-selection issues. A Pro Controller was a reviewer’s fix for category switching. |
| PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch | Players already committed to those ecosystems | Availability is reported, but control and stability impressions vary by platform. |
Hey Poor Player lists an October 8, 2026 console launch and a $19.99 MSRP. That price and date apply to the listed launch information; store pricing can vary by region and promotion.

Metacritic records a 73/100 PC Metascore from nine critic reviews in 2025, categorized as Mixed or Average. Steam shows 84% positive across 1,208 all-time user reviews and 77% positive across 31 recent reviews at the time of the 2026 crawl. The spread reflects the same pattern: strong appreciation for the premise and tactical systems, tempered by concerns about repetition, progression and console usability.

Is Deck of Haunts worth it?
Buy it if you enjoy experimenting with layouts, building decks around interactions and playing the villain rather than a survivor. The architecture-card relationship is unusual enough to carry several satisfying runs, and the tension system rewards planning instead of random card dumping.
Choose PC when control precision and interface clarity are priorities. Choose Switch 2 when portability matters more and you are comfortable using a Pro Controller. Skip it if you need a substantial story, deep long-term progression or a consistently polished console interface.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Deck of Haunts run last?
The win condition is survival through 28 nights, but the available data does not establish a fixed number of minutes per run. Duration changes with map construction, visitor pathing, pauses between decisions and whether a run ends early when the Heart is destroyed.
Can you replay Deck of Haunts after beating it once?
Yes. Later runs can retain unlocks including cards, decks, rooms, missions, totems, difficulty options and Nightmare mode. Reviews differ on whether that meta-progression remains deep enough for long-term replay.
What controller should I use for Deck of Haunts on Switch 2?
A Switch 2 Pro Controller is the most defensible choice based on a reviewer’s report that it solved the Joy-Con L/R category-switching problem in TV mode. It is a practical workaround, not a confirmed fix for every control or interface issue.
Does Deck of Haunts have multiplayer?
The game is presented as a single-player experience. Its design centers on one player managing the house, deck and intruder routes rather than cooperative or competitive matches.
