Updated August 18, 2026. Decky Loader is community-maintained software, so SteamOS and Steam client updates can temporarily break compatibility. The correct fix depends on the symptom: a missing Decky icon usually points to the loader or an update regression, while a blank menu or single failing plugin often points to plugin trouble. Work through the least-destructive fixes below before uninstalling anything.
Decky is designed primarily for Steam Deck LCD and OLED models running the official SteamOS image. Check the official Decky Loader repository for current compatibility information and releases.

Quick diagnosis: what is actually broken?

Decky Loader and its plugins are separate components. The loader is maintained by the Decky project, while individual plugins are maintained by different developers. That distinction is why reinstalling Decky is not automatically the best first step.
Start with these low-risk fixes
- In Gaming Mode, press Steam and open Settings > System.
- Install any available SteamOS update.
- Restart the Steam Deck.
- Open Quick Access and check whether Decky has returned.
- If Decky opens, restart or reload it using its own settings control, then test again with nonessential plugins disabled.

If Decky disappeared after a SteamOS or Steam update
This is one of the most common update-related patterns. Recent Decky releases have included fixes for changes in Steam client and SteamOS beta builds, and issue reports have documented failures following Steam updates. Those reports describe affected configurations; they do not establish that a particular SteamOS version breaks Decky for everyone.
The official repair path is to rerun the installer from Desktop Mode:
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Open the official Decky Loader GitHub repository.
- Use the project’s official installer and select the latest stable/release branch.
- Return to Gaming Mode and restart the Deck if the icon does not reappear.
From a Konsole window, the official release installer command is:
curl -L https://github.com/SteamDeckHomebrew/decky-installer/releases/latest/download/install_release.sh | shThis downloads and executes a script, so use this command only from the official project source. Do not substitute a similarly named command from a third-party mirror.
The live release page should be treated as authoritative because versions change. When checked on August 18, 2026, it listed stable v3.2.6 and prerelease v3.2.8-pre1. Those numbers are not permanent compatibility guarantees.
Stable or prerelease: which should you choose?
Use the stable release first. It is intended for ordinary users and is less likely to introduce experimental behavior. Try prerelease only when stable remains incompatible with your current SteamOS or Steam client build and the project’s release notes or issue tracker suggest that prerelease contains a relevant fix.

- Stable/release: the normal choice for reliability.
- Prerelease: potentially newer compatibility fixes, but a greater chance of new bugs.
Do not switch branches repeatedly without noting which branch you installed and whether the result changed. Prerelease is a targeted compatibility experiment, not a universal repair.

If Decky opens to a blank or error screen
Start by separating a loader failure from a plugin failure:
- Think back to the last plugin you installed or updated.
- If Decky still responds, open its settings or plugin-management screen and disable that plugin.
- Restart Decky or reboot the Deck.
- Re-enable plugins one at a time.
- Stop when the problem returns. The last plugin enabled is the likely trigger.
Check that plugin’s official repository for a newer release or an issue report. Avoid random replacement ZIP files and unofficial “plugin packs.” The Decky project warns users not to install plugins from untrusted sources, and plugins can have broad access to the Deck’s environment.
If Quick Access causes Steam to freeze, restart, or show an error screen, disable the most recently changed plugins first. Reports in the Decky issue tracker include plugin-related startup failures and blank screens, but an issue report should not be treated as proof that every installation of a named plugin is broken.
When the Plugin Store will not load
A blank store does not necessarily mean Decky itself is broken. The store must retrieve metadata and release information from remote services, so several independent failures are possible:

- The Deck’s network, DNS, VPN, proxy, firewall, or ad blocker is interfering.
- GitHub or another repository endpoint is temporarily unavailable.
- GitHub API rate limiting is preventing metadata requests.
- The plugin is no longer maintained or has a malformed manifest or release asset.
Try these checks:
- Switch to Desktop Mode and test ordinary web browsing.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy, DNS filter, or aggressive ad blocker.
- Try a phone hotspot to distinguish the Deck from the home network.
- Update Decky using the official installer, then retry the store.
- If GitHub or the relevant repository is having an outage, wait and try again later.
A working browser does not prove that every GitHub API or Decky store request is working. The Decky issue tracker has documented installer failures associated with API rate limits, so rate limiting is a possible failure mode rather than a universal explanation.

Check for documented port conflicts
The official Decky documentation identifies port conflicts as another possible cause. Syncthing commonly uses port 8080, while Decky may need port 8080 or 1337 depending on the component. Do not change ports blindly: first identify the application using the port.
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Check whether Syncthing or another background service is running.
- If Syncthing owns port 8080, change Syncthing to port 8384, as recommended by the Decky project.
- Stop or reconfigure other software using ports 1337 or 8080.
- Restart the affected service, restart Decky, and return to Gaming Mode.
Third-party Desktop Mode applications can also contribute to Steam instability. Steam recommends temporarily exiting or disabling such software while troubleshooting.
Repair install before a full uninstall
Run the official installer again before removing Decky completely. A repair install is less disruptive and may replace missing or outdated components without requiring you to rebuild the entire setup.

- Restart the Deck.
- Test Decky before reinstalling every plugin.
- Add plugins back one at a time.
If the repair install fails or the installation is clearly incomplete, the official uninstall command is:
curl -L https://github.com/SteamDeckHomebrew/decky-installer/releases/latest/download/uninstall.sh | shUse the uninstall script only from the official Decky repository. Uninstalling removes Decky’s plugin files, but plugin-created data is not necessarily identical to those files and may remain. Do not assume that every setting, save, cache, or configuration will be preserved or deleted consistently across all plugins and installer versions.
After reinstalling, confirm that the loader works with no plugins before restoring them. Reinstalling everything immediately can reproduce the original failure and make diagnosis harder.

Advanced diagnosis: collect evidence before changing services
Use this section only if the basic repair path has failed and you are comfortable working in Desktop Mode. The exact service name, installation path, and log location can vary by Decky branch and version. Avoid copying generic systemctl commands from forum posts unless they match your installed version and the project’s current documentation.
Before opening a GitHub issue, record:
- SteamOS version.
- Steam client version and whether you are using stable or beta channels.
- Decky Loader version and branch.
- Every installed plugin and its version, especially the one most recently updated.
- The exact error message and the steps that reproduce it.
- Whether the issue started immediately after a SteamOS or Steam client update.
- Relevant backend and frontend logs.
- Whether you modified SteamOS’s read-only filesystem or installed third-party Desktop Mode services.
The Decky project’s issue templates request similar information. Providing it is more useful than reporting only that “Decky does not work,” and it helps distinguish an update regression from a plugin, service, or network problem.

Decky’s official focus is the Steam Deck running the official SteamOS image. Third-party systems such as Bazzite may offer their own Decky integration, but their service names, paths, Steam client behavior, and support process can differ.
If you are using Bazzite or another unofficial configuration:
- Follow that distribution’s Decky instructions first.
- Do not assume Steam Deck-specific service commands or recovery steps apply.
- Record the distribution and version when seeking support.
- Check whether the problem is present in the distribution’s Steam integration rather than in Decky itself.
Beta SteamOS and Steam client channels can expose compatibility changes earlier than stable channels. Record your channel before changing it, and do not switch to beta merely to make Decky work unless a specific documented fix requires it.

Do not factory-reset the Deck for a Decky problem
SteamOS recovery is a last resort, not a normal Decky repair. Consider it only if SteamOS itself is unstable, other system functions are broken, and Decky remains unusable after checking updates, plugins, network access, ports, and the official installation.

Before using recovery or reimaging tools, back up:
- Game saves that are not synchronized with Steam Cloud.
- Emulation files and ROM-related configurations.
- Non-Steam game prefixes.
- Decky plugin settings and configurations.
- Screenshots and personal files stored on the Deck.
Read Valve’s official SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guide carefully. Recovery options have different effects; a repair, reimage, and destructive reset are not interchangeable.
The safest order of operations
For most Steam Deck owners, the efficient path is:
- Update SteamOS and restart the Deck.
- Determine whether the loader or only one plugin is failing.
- Disable the last plugin installed or updated.
- Test the network, VPN, DNS, and GitHub access if the store will not load.
- Check documented port conflicts, especially Syncthing on port 8080.
- Rerun the official stable Decky installer.
- Try prerelease only when current compatibility evidence justifies it.
- Uninstall and reinstall only after the repair install fails.
- Collect versions and logs before reporting the problem.
- Reserve SteamOS recovery for broader system failures.
