Windows 11’s “Optimizations for windowed games” can improve responsiveness and frame delivery in compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode—but it is not a guaranteed FPS boost. Average FPS may stay the same, rise slightly, or occasionally fall. The setting’s clearest benefits are lower presentation latency and better support for features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR).
What “Optimizations for windowed games” actually changes
Traditional windowed games can use an older bit-block-transfer, or “blt,” presentation path. Windows 11 can move compatible games to the newer flip presentation model when this optimization is enabled. Microsoft says this can reduce frame latency and allow features such as Auto HDR and VRR to work in supported windowed and borderless-windowed games.

In practical terms, the game can present completed frames to the display more efficiently. That may make borderless mode feel more responsive and produce steadier frame delivery without forcing you to use exclusive fullscreen. It does not make the game engine render faster by itself, remove every source of borderless-mode overhead, or make borderless performance identical to fullscreen.
The documented target is compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in Windowed or Borderless Windowed mode. Do not assume the toggle applies in the same way to DirectX 12, Vulkan, exclusive fullscreen, or every game using a different presentation method.

Does it increase FPS?
Sometimes, but there is no universal percentage—and raw FPS is not the main promise of the feature.
| Metric | What you might see |
|---|---|
| Average FPS | Often unchanged; it may improve in some older DX10/DX11 games or decline in an individual title. |
| 1% lows and frame pacing | May improve if the old presentation path caused inconsistent frame delivery. |
| Input or presentation latency | This is the setting’s clearest intended benefit. |
| VRR and HDR behavior | These features may become available or work more consistently on supported hardware. |
If your game is GPU-bound, CPU-bound, shader-compilation-bound, frame-capped, thermally throttled, or limited by its own V-Sync settings, changing the Windows presentation path may not increase its render rate. A similar FPS number can still be a good result if frame-time spikes or input delay improve.
Claims that this setting gives every game a 20 percent boost, doubles FPS, or works with all graphics APIs are misleading. Treat it as a latency and presentation optimization that may also improve smoothness, not as a one-click FPS booster.
How to enable it globally
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Default settings, turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
- Close and restart the game.
The restart matters. The game must be relaunched before the changed presentation behavior takes effect. Menu names and placement can vary with your Windows 11 build, language, device, and Microsoft’s ongoing Settings redesign.
How to configure one game
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, select the game.
- Choose Options.
- Select the preferred GPU: Let Windows decide, Power saving, or High performance.
- Turn Optimizations for windowed games on or off for that title.
- If required, select Don’t use Auto HDR.
- Select Save, then restart the game.
This per-game override is the safest way to handle exceptions. You can leave the global setting enabled and disable it only for titles that show worse performance, flicker, HDR issues, stutter, or overlay problems.
Which GPU should a laptop use?
On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, choose High performance for demanding games when the system is plugged in and gaming performance matters most. Choose Power saving when battery life, heat, or fan noise is more important.

Confirm the result rather than trusting the preference alone. Check Task Manager, the game’s diagnostic overlay, or your GPU vendor’s software to verify which GPU is rendering the game. Hybrid systems can also involve an OEM performance mode, Advanced Optimus, a MUX switch, or a display connected internally to one GPU. Changing Windows’ preference may require a game restart and may not override every manufacturer-level setting.
Microsoft’s GPU guidance explains the general difference: integrated graphics are typically more power efficient, while discrete GPUs are intended for heavier workloads such as gaming.
Auto HDR and the windowed-game optimization
Auto HDR changes the game’s image output; it does not increase the game’s rendering resolution or guarantee higher FPS. Microsoft also states that enabling Auto HDR automatically enables Optimizations for windowed games. To turn off the windowed-game optimization, you may first need to disable Auto HDR.
If you notice washed-out colors, flicker, incorrect black levels, brightness problems, or stutter, test these variables separately:
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn Auto HDR off.
- Turn Optimizations for windowed games off for the game.
- Test exclusive fullscreen.
- Test the HDR and VRR combination independently.
Do not treat Auto HDR as a performance feature. Its value is visual, and the additional processing or interaction with your display pipeline can vary by system.
VRR, refresh rate, and Dynamic Refresh Rate
Variable refresh rate synchronizes the display’s refresh behavior with the game’s frame output. FreeSync, G-SYNC, and Adaptive-Sync can reduce tearing and make fluctuating FPS look smoother when the monitor, GPU, driver, and game support them. VRR does not create additional rendered frames.
Check your display configuration at Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Confirm that Windows is using the monitor’s intended refresh rate and review whether VRR is supported. Enable FreeSync, G-SYNC, or Adaptive-Sync in the relevant GPU control panel when applicable.

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) requires compatible hardware, including a VRR-capable display and at least 120Hz support. Microsoft warns that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. If a game appears capped or unexpectedly runs at a lower refresh rate, disable DRR and test again. Microsoft’s refresh-rate guidance covers these settings.
When it is most likely to help
- You play a compatible DX10 or DX11 game in borderless-windowed mode.
- The game feels less responsive in borderless mode than expected.
- Frame delivery is inconsistent even though average FPS is acceptable.
- You want VRR or Auto HDR in a supported windowed presentation mode.
- You regularly switch between the game, chat, streaming tools, and multiple monitors.
When it probably will not raise FPS
- The game is already GPU-limited at roughly 95–100 percent GPU utilization.
- A single CPU thread or game-engine limit is holding back performance.
- The game has an internal frame cap or restrictive V-Sync configuration.
- The title uses DirectX 12 or Vulkan outside the feature’s documented DX10/DX11 target.
- The laptop is limited by temperature, power, or battery mode.
- The game already performs well in exclusive fullscreen.
Total CPU usage can look moderate while one heavily used CPU thread is saturated. Likewise, a higher “High performance” power setting cannot overcome sustained thermal throttling.
How to test it properly
Use an A/B test instead of relying on how the game feels after changing several settings at once.
Keep these conditions constant
- Game build, graphics preset, resolution, and render scale.
- Display refresh rate, HDR state, and VRR state.
- Power connection and Windows power mode.
- Frame cap, V-Sync, and in-game latency settings.
- Background applications and overlays.
- The same location, replay, route, or built-in benchmark.
Run the comparison
- Restart the PC if you recently changed Windows or graphics drivers.
- Launch the game in borderless-windowed mode with the optimization off.
- Record a repeatable baseline.
- Exit and restart the game.
- Enable the optimization for the game.
- Repeat the same test.
- If available, repeat the test in exclusive fullscreen.
Compare average FPS, 1% lows or percentile FPS, frame-time graphs, input latency, GPU utilization and clocks, CPU utilization, temperatures, power limits, tearing, flicker, HDR behavior, and stutter. NVIDIA’s free FrameView can record average and percentile performance data, along with other system metrics. It is useful for measurement, not a requirement for using the Windows feature.
Interpret the result by asking what changed:
- FPS is similar but frame-time spikes fall: keep the setting if the game feels smoother.
- FPS rises only in borderless mode: that matches the feature’s intended scenario.
- Fullscreen is faster or cleaner: use fullscreen for that title.
- The result changes when HDR or VRR is enabled: test those features independently.
Troubleshooting
The toggle is missing
Search Settings for windowed games or graphics settings, then check Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Install pending Windows updates and restart the PC. A different Windows 11 build, language, or hardware configuration may expose different graphics controls. Do not confuse this option with separate controls for Variable refresh rate, Auto HDR, or Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
The option turns itself back on
Auto HDR can automatically enable Optimizations for windowed games. Disable Auto HDR first, then disable the optimization for the game.
Performance gets worse
- Disable the feature for that game only and restart it.
- Disable Auto HDR for the game.
- Test VRR on and off.
- Test exclusive fullscreen.
- Disable overlays one at a time.
- Update the GPU driver, or test a known-good earlier version if the problem began after an update.
- Recheck the game’s frame cap and V-Sync settings.
Flickering, black screens, or HDR errors
Turn off Auto HDR, then test Windows or vendor VRR settings, another refresh rate, and fullscreen mode. Remove third-party overlays and re-enable features one at a time to identify the trigger.

No FPS change
That does not prove the feature failed. Its effect may appear as lower presentation latency or fewer frame-time spikes rather than a higher engine-rendered FPS number.
Other Windows 11 settings worth testing
Game Mode
Windows includes Game Mode under Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. Microsoft describes it as a feature intended to optimize system performance during gaming. Leave it on for a normal baseline, but test it separately when troubleshooting. Changing it at the same time as the windowed-game optimization makes the result harder to attribute.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPower mode
On a plugged-in laptop or desktop where additional heat and power use are acceptable, open Settings > System > Power & battery and set Power mode to Best performance. Microsoft warns that this can increase power consumption, heat, fan noise, and battery drain. On a thermally limited laptop, extra heat can cause throttling and erase any theoretical gain.
Background processes and overlays
Close unnecessary applications and browser tabs before benchmarking. Test Xbox Game Bar, Discord, Steam, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, recording software, RGB utilities, monitoring tools, and other injectors individually. An overlay is not automatically harmful, but isolating it is the only reliable way to identify an interaction. Microsoft recommends reviewing Task Manager’s Processes, Performance, and Startup apps tabs when background activity may affect performance.
Windows and GPU updates
Check Windows Update and appropriate optional driver updates, and use the GPU manufacturer’s official driver channel. A newer driver is not automatically faster for every game; if an issue began after an update, compare it with a known-good driver version.
Should you use fullscreen or borderless?
Neither mode is universally superior.
Borderless/windowed mode makes task switching, multi-monitor use, overlays, streaming, and access to chat more convenient. Windows 11’s optimization can improve its presentation path in compatible games.

Exclusive fullscreen may still deliver lower latency or higher FPS in a particular title and can avoid some desktop-composition or overlay interactions. If borderless mode stutters, flickers, or performs worse after testing, fullscreen is a sensible fallback.
Final recommendation
Enable Optimizations for windowed games globally if you regularly play compatible DX10/DX11 games in borderless or windowed mode. Then verify each important title with a repeatable comparison. Keep it enabled when responsiveness, frame pacing, VRR, or HDR behavior improves; disable it per game when performance or visual stability gets worse.
Do not pay for registry “FPS boosters,” driver-updater subscriptions, RAM cleaners, or one-click latency tools to solve a problem this reversible setting may help diagnose. Measurement and per-game rollback are more useful than promises of a fixed FPS gain.
