“The program can’t start because defaultdevicemanager.dll is missing from your computer.” The defaultdevicemanager.dll error can also say that the file was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows.
DefaultDeviceManager.dll is a Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or ordinary game DLL. Public file inventories place the normal copy in C:WindowsSystem32, but the correct repair depends on whether Windows itself is damaged or only one application is failing.

Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- Windows has recently updated, crashed, or lost system files: run Windows Update, DISM, then SFC.
- Only one game or application shows the message: repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history and restore it only if the file is genuinely Microsoft-signed.
- The error appeared after cleanup software, malware, or an interrupted installation: repair Windows first, then consider System Restore or Windows recovery.
- You tried
regsvr32: stop repeating it. This DLL is not a generic self-registering component. - A downloaded replacement is sitting in
System32or the game folder: remove it and repair Windows or the affected application through official sources.
Do not begin by downloading a DLL from a random repository. A replacement can contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual servicing problem untouched.

Reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because defaultdevicemanager.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting defaultdevicemanager.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading defaultdevicemanager.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because defaultdevicemanager.dll was not found.”
- “defaultdevicemanager.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “This application has failed to start because DefaultDeviceManager.dll was not found.”
The wording varies by Windows version and the program that requested the component. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL failed to load.

A normal Windows copy is associated with Microsoft Windows and the description “Default Device Manager.” Public inventories have recorded both x86 and x64 versions across several Windows generations, so copying a file from another PC is not a reliable repair.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
An incomplete update or servicing failure can leave a protected component missing or mismatched.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the program that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
If the error began immediately after an update, do not manually replace the DLL with an older copy. Continue with DISM and SFC so Windows can reconcile its component store.

This is the main fix when defaultdevicemanager.dll is missing, corrupted, incorrectly replaced, or blocked by a damaged Windows component store. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because SFC may need DISM to provide a healthy repair source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application again.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it did not find any integrity violations. Either way, restart before testing.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, run Windows Update again and retry. Microsoft also documents using a matching local Windows installation source when Windows Update cannot provide the required files.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required when the built-in commands resolve the problem.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix 3: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
If Windows passes its integrity checks and only one program shows the message, the application may have a damaged installation, an incomplete update, or a missing application dependency. That does not prove the application owns defaultdevicemanager.dll; it may simply be the program that triggers Windows to load it.
Microsoft Store or packaged apps
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Click Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, choose Reset if you can accept the app’s local data being cleared.
Traditional desktop programs
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Complete the installer and restart.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. For a game, use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity feature before reinstalling the entire game.
Do not copy defaultdevicemanager.dll into the game directory. That can make the loader select an incompatible application-local file instead of the Windows component it should use.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus protection may have quarantined a legitimate file after a false detection, or malware may have removed or modified it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the affected time.
- Expand an item to inspect its path, threat name, and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when its location, signature, and origin are trustworthy. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the PC again. Do not disable antivirus merely to install a downloaded DLL.

After dealing with the detection, run Scan options > Full scan. If malware is suspected or Windows remains unreliable, use Microsoft Defender Offline and then repeat DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Check the file path and signature
If a copy exists, its location matters.
The expected system location is generally:
C:WindowsSystem32DefaultDeviceManager.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains the 64-bit system files. A 32-bit application may use a 32-bit dependency through Windows compatibility paths, so do not assume that copying a 64-bit file into SysWOW64 is correct. Architecture must match the calling process and the Windows component being repaired.
To inspect a file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported path.
- Right-click
DefaultDeviceManager.dll. - Choose Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Open Details and review the company, description, and version information.
A missing signature, an unexpected folder, or a file downloaded from an unknown source is a reason to remove that copy and repair Windows rather than trust it.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. The examined metadata for DefaultDeviceManager.dll lists COM-related exports including DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, but not DllRegisterServer.
Running this command is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 DefaultDeviceManager.dll
It can produce an error saying that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. It also cannot recreate a missing protected Windows component or repair a broken dependency. Use regsvr32 only when a verified vendor-specific instruction explicitly requires it for that exact DLL.
Do Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET need reinstalling
Not by default. There is no established evidence that this filename is supplied by Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET.
Reinstall one of those runtimes only when the affected application’s official requirements or its own error message identifies that runtime. For defaultdevicemanager.dll itself, Windows servicing is the appropriate first repair.
Fix 6: Update device drivers only when hardware errors are also present
A driver update is not the primary repair for a missing Windows DLL. Consider it when Device Manager shows a warning icon, the error appeared after a hardware change, or the application also fails with graphics, audio, display, or device initialization errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For graphics hardware, obtain drivers from the GPU manufacturer’s official support page rather than a DLL repository. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers in its free scan; the full version performs driver installation, but updating drivers is not a substitute for repairing the Windows component or reinstalling the affected application.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a cleanup utility, driver installation, update, or other system change and a restore point predates the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose Show more restore points if available.
- Select a point from before the error began.
- Click Scan for affected programs.
- Confirm the restore and restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs. If no suitable restore point exists, use the Windows recovery options instead.

Fix 8: Reinstall Windows without immediately resetting everything
On Windows 11, a less disruptive recovery option may be available:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability can depend on the Windows installation and device configuration.
If that option is unavailable or fails, use Windows installation media or Reset this PC after backing up important files. A full reset or clean installation is appropriate when malware, repeated servicing failures, or severe system corruption makes the existing installation unreliable.
If the error remains
Record these details before asking for further help:
- Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The exact error text
- The application or game being launched
- The full path shown in the error
- The file’s version and digital signature
- Whether the issue followed Windows Update, cleanup, antivirus quarantine, malware, or an interrupted installation
- The final messages from DISM and SFC
The next failure may involve a dependency rather than defaultdevicemanager.dll itself. That information helps distinguish a damaged Windows component from an application-specific loader problem.
FAQ
Is defaultdevicemanager.dll legitimate
Yes. It is identified as a Microsoft Windows DLL with the description “Default Device Manager.” Its normal system location is associated with C:WindowsSystem32.
Should I download defaultdevicemanager.dll
No. Downloaded DLLs can be malicious, mismatched with your Windows build, or compiled for the wrong architecture. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC or reinstall the affected application from its official source.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I copy it to System32, SysWOW64, or the game folder
No. Do not guess the destination. Windows servicing places protected components correctly, while an application reinstall restores files owned by that application.
Will registering it with regsvr32 fix the error
Usually not. The available export information does not show the ordinary DllRegisterServer entry point required for generic registration.
Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX problem
There is no verified basis for treating this filename as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Check the application’s official requirements only if it reports a separate runtime error.
What is the safest first repair
Install pending Windows updates, run DISM, run sfc /scannow, restart, and then repair or reinstall the application that reports the error.
