The 60-second answer
ieetwproxystub.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Internet Explorer 11. Its description is “IE ETW Collector Proxy Stub Resources,” and Microsoft continues to include it in Internet Explorer cumulative-update manifests alongside ieetwcollector.exe and ieetwcollectorres.dll.

Do not download this DLL from a random file archive. Install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by SFC from an administrator Command Prompt. Those steps restore Windows component files from trusted sources and also repair the component store that SFC depends on.
What is ieetwproxystub.dll?
The file belongs to the Internet Explorer component family, not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a printer driver, or a game runtime. Internet Explorer 11 is retired as a standalone browser, but parts of its legacy code remain relevant to Windows features and Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft’s March 2026 Internet Explorer file manifest lists these variants:
- Version
11.0.9600.23067 - 64-bit file size:
48,640bytes - 32-bit file size:
47,616bytes
The exact version on your computer can differ according to your Windows release and servicing branch. Microsoft’s September 2025 manifest also lists the file in both architecture variants.
Where should the file be?
On 64-bit Windows, the normal system-directory layout is:
- 64-bit component:
%windir%System32 - 32-bit component:
%windir%SysWOW64
Despite its name, SysWOW64 is the directory used for 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
These locations are strong indicators, not an absolute guarantee for every Windows edition or servicing state. A copy found in a program folder, temporary directory, user profile, or download folder should not automatically be trusted.
To check the normal locations:
- Press
Windows+E. - Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Search for
ieetwproxystub.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, repeat the check in
%windir%SysWOW64.
A missing file does not prove malware or application failure. It can indicate damaged Windows files, an incomplete update, antivirus quarantine, or an architecture mismatch.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows servicing is the safest first repair because Microsoft distributes this component through Windows and Internet Explorer updates.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, open Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available quality, cumulative, and servicing updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program that reported the error.
If Windows Update fails, record the error code and continue with DISM and SFC below. Do not search for a standalone copy of the DLL as a substitute for the update.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run DISM first. It repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as its repair source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected application again.
Microsoft provides these steps in its guide to using System File Checker in Windows.
A successful result may say that DISM completed the restore operation or that SFC found and repaired corrupt files. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more after DISM has completed. If the file is still missing, continue to the repair-source section.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and rerunning SFC or DISM does not show what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show its findings; repair actions are performed by the full version, and it is optional.
Fix 3: Use a matching DISM repair source
If Windows Update is damaged or DISM cannot find source files, use installation media or another repair source that matches your installed Windows edition, language, and architecture.
The general command is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a matching Windows repair source. The placeholder path is not a universal command.
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test the program. Microsoft documents the requirements and syntax in its guide to repairing missing or corrupted system files.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file, although you should verify the file before restoring it.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
ieetwproxystub.dll. - Check the recorded path. A file in
%windir%System32or%windir%SysWOW64is more consistent with a Windows component than one in a download or temporary folder. - Restore it only if the detection identifies the genuine Microsoft system component and the file path is appropriate.
- Run a full malware scan.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward.
Do not blindly add the file to an exclusion list. If antivirus repeatedly detects it, investigate the path, digital signature, and system integrity instead of forcing the file back into place.
Fix 5: Check the Internet Explorer Windows feature
On Windows 10, Internet Explorer 11 may still be available as a Windows feature.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press
Enter. - Find Internet Explorer 11.
- If it is unchecked, select it and choose OK.
- Restart when prompted.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
Microsoft describes this process in Use Internet Explorer in Windows 10.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn Windows 11, standalone Internet Explorer is not supported. The supported legacy-browser route is Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft explains the Windows 11 status in its Internet Explorer and IE mode information. Enabling an old browser feature is not a replacement for repairing Windows system files.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit architecture
The official update manifests contain separate 32-bit and 64-bit entries. A wrong-architecture file can cause messages such as “not designed to run on Windows.”
On 64-bit Windows, check both:
%windir%System32
%windir%SysWOW64
Do not copy a file between these directories manually. Do not use the larger or smaller file simply because its size seems to match an error page. Windows servicing should select the correct version, language, and architecture.
You can check your architecture by opening Settings → System → About and reviewing System type. If an older application is the only program affected, it may be a 32-bit application using the 32-bit Windows component path.

If Windows itself works normally and one legacy application fails, the application may be damaged or may be invoking an Internet Explorer component incorrectly.
Use the program’s own repair process:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair or Reset, if offered.
- If those options are unavailable, uninstall the program.
- Download its current installer from the developer’s official source.
- Reinstall it and restart Windows.
- Test it again.
For a game launcher, use its official Verify files or Repair installation command before reinstalling the entire game.
No reliable evidence ties this filename to one particular game, installer, or launcher. If the application remains the only source of the error, contact its developer with the executable name, Windows version, and complete error text.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing Windows component.

Running this command is not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 ieetwproxystub.dll
It may produce an entry-point error or accomplish nothing. Microsoft documents the purpose of regsvr32, but there is no evidence that ieetwproxystub.dll should be manually registered.
Similarly, do not use Device Manager for this file. It is not a device driver, so updating display, chipset, printer, or network drivers will not directly restore it.
Best Value
Should you install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Microsoft’s update manifests associate this DLL with the Internet Explorer component, not with those redistributable packages. Installing unrelated runtimes can add unnecessary software without repairing the missing Windows file.
Should you download the DLL manually?
No. Random DLL websites can provide the wrong version, architecture, language, or a modified file. A copied DLL may also fail because the actual problem is a damaged component store, a missing dependency, or an incorrect application loader.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Features where supported, and the affected program’s official installer instead.
If the repair still fails
Collect these details before escalating:
- The exact error text
- The executable that displays it
- Your Windows edition, version, build, and architecture
- Whether the file exists in
System32orSysWOW64 - Windows Update history
- Antivirus quarantine details
- DISM and SFC results
- Any related Event Viewer entry
If the failure began recently and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may help. Open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore, choose a restore point from before the failure, and review the programs and drivers that will be rolled back.
For persistent component corruption, use an in-place Windows repair installation from matching Microsoft installation media. This is more appropriate than copying individual DLLs when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component. Microsoft also lists broader Windows Update troubleshooting, including storage and update checks, in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
FAQ
Is ieetwproxystub.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Internet Explorer. A copy in an unusual folder, with an invalid signature, or repeatedly detected by antivirus deserves investigation.
Is Internet Explorer still required?
Standalone Internet Explorer 11 is retired. Legacy Windows components can still matter, and Windows 11 uses Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge for supported legacy sites and applications.
Why does a game mention this file?
The game or launcher may rely on a legacy Windows component, but there is no reliable evidence identifying a particular game as the routine cause. Repair the Windows component first, then verify or reinstall the affected program.
Should I copy the DLL from another PC?
No. The two architecture variants are not interchangeable, and the Windows build, language, update level, and file trust status may differ.
What is the correct repair order?
Install Windows updates, restart, run DISM, run SFC, restart again, and then repair the individual application if only that program still fails.
