Back up a delisted game’s save using the method your platform supports, and keep a second copy when possible. On Steam, copy the local save folder as well as checking Steam Cloud; PS4 supports copying saved data to compatible USB storage; PS5 saves are not copied directly to USB; and Nintendo Switch saves cannot be copied to microSD. A save backup preserves progress, but it does not guarantee you can reinstall or launch the game later.
What does delisting change about a save backup?
Delisting does not create one universal save-file format or backup procedure. The method depends on where the game stores progress and what the platform permits: a PC save may be a folder you can copy, while a console save may be managed through the console’s own saved-data controls or cloud service.

A saved-data backup is not proof that the game, its patches or downloadable content can still be downloaded, authenticated or launched. Check those questions for the specific platform, account and title rather than assuming a backup solves them.

Before you copy anything: a preservation checklist
Start while the game still launches and the original account is available. A backup made after a crash, account change or failed synchronization may already contain the wrong state.
- Write and confirm the newest save. Save inside the game, wait for any saving indicator to finish, then exit normally. Abruptly closing the application can leave the newest progress unwritten.
- Identify the platform account. Note the Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo or Xbox account that owns the progress. Account context can matter when cloud storage or a console restore is involved.
- Make a dated copy. Use a date in the folder name or in a simple text note. Multiple dated snapshots are more useful than repeatedly overwriting one backup.
- Use two locations when practical. Keep one copy on the platform-supported service and another on independent storage. A portable external SSD is useful for PC folders and supported PlayStation operations, but it is not a universal console destination.
- Record the game context. Note the platform, title, region if relevant to your own records, installed version, and any mods or special configuration. This does not convert a save between platforms, but it helps you identify the right backup later.
Do not pay for hardware merely because a game is delisted. If you already have a suitable drive with enough free space, it may be sufficient. The important distinction is between a second, verifiable copy and the only copy remaining on a failing console or PC. Cloud services may require the relevant platform feature, account and subscription conditions, so confirm those requirements before relying on them.
How do I back up a PC or Steam save?
On a PC, make an independent copy of the local save folder even if the game uses Steam Cloud. The folder gives you a separate copy to inspect and restore if synchronization or a later installation leaves the wrong save in place.
- Write the latest save. Launch the game, save normally, and exit it normally so the current progress has a chance to be written to disk.
- Check Steam Cloud. Confirm whether the game uses Steam Cloud and whether its status shows synchronization has completed. Cloud availability is game-specific; do not assume every title uses it.
- Locate the local save. Steam’s support material identifies Steam userdata locations, but a game may instead use a developer-specific folder elsewhere on the PC. Check the game’s own support information if the save is not in the expected Steam location.
- Copy the whole save folder. Copy rather than move it, and place the copy on a separate drive or in a verified cloud-backup location. Keep the original in place.
- Label the copy. Add the game name and backup date to the copied folder’s name or its containing folder so you can distinguish it from a later version.
- Preserve relevant configuration separately. If mods or settings affect compatibility, keep notes or copies of the relevant configuration too. Do not assume those files are included in the save folder.
If Steam Cloud is disabled, the local folder is especially important: Steam says progress that would normally use cloud functionality is saved locally on the machine where it was made. A second copy on another device or drive protects against losing access to that machine.
Steam Cloud is not the same as a local archive
Cloud synchronization is designed to keep supported progress available through the account, while a copied folder lets you inspect a particular point in time. If the cloud has synchronized an unwanted or damaged state, that state may not be the one you want to restore. Conversely, a local folder can be lost with a disk failure. Keeping both gives you two different recovery paths.
Do not delete the local folder after seeing a successful cloud status. Do not assume a generic cloud-backup provider is equivalent to Steam Cloud: a general service must support arbitrary folders, version history and your operating system, while Steam Cloud is tied to the title’s own integration.
What should I do before restoring a PC save?
Exit the game and make a dated copy of the current local folder before changing anything. Restore by copying the backed-up files into the game’s expected save location only after confirming that the backup belongs to the right game and version context. Keep the untouched backup until the game has loaded the intended progress; do not let a cloud-sync prompt or an overwrite replace your only copy.

If the title uses mods, do not change the mod set blindly and then blame the save when it fails to load. Preserve notes about the configuration that produced the backup. A maintenance utility may help locate or copy an inaccessible PC folder, but it is not guaranteed save recovery and does not replace the manual backup.
How do I copy a PS4 save to USB?
PS4 supports copying saved data to compatible USB storage through the console’s saved-data controls. Sony’s PS4 backup guidance specifies FAT32 or exFAT storage for backup operations, and its saved-data guidance covers copying game data to USB.
- Prepare compatible USB storage. Use a USB device with enough free space and a supported format for the operation. Sony’s cited PS4 backup guidance names FAT32 and exFAT.
- Write the newest progress. Save in the game and return to the console interface before beginning the copy.
- Open the PS4 saved-data management controls. Choose the option to copy saved data to USB storage and select the game’s save. Use the console’s own controls rather than trying to manipulate unknown folders on the drive.
- Keep a second location if available. If PlayStation Plus cloud storage is available for your account and title, verify that the save has synchronized there as well.
- Protect the current save before restoring. Keep the USB or cloud copy intact and read the console’s overwrite warning. A restore may replace data already on the console.
Sony Interactive Entertainment advises that saved data should be backed up to avoid losing game progress. A USB copy is useful because it is independent of the console’s internal storage, but it does not guarantee that a delisted title can be downloaded again.
PS4 pitfalls
Formatting, selecting the wrong game, or starting a restore before preserving the newer console copy can turn a backup exercise into data loss. Leave the copied USB data untouched until you have tested the restored save. If you maintain several snapshots, label them by date instead of relying on the console’s displayed title alone.
Can I copy a PS5 save to a USB drive?
No: Sony’s transfer guidance says you cannot copy PS5 saved data from the console to a USB drive. For an individual PS5 save, use PlayStation Plus cloud storage when supported and verify that the cloud copy is current.
Sony also documents USB backup and restore for broader PS5 console data. That is a different operation from exporting an individual PS5 save file, so do not treat a console backup as a simple USB save-copy workflow.
- Before restoring a broader backup, confirm it belongs to the right console and account context and that it is newer than the local data you want to keep.
- Preserve any current local or cloud copy before starting.
- Read the restore warnings carefully because restoring can replace data on the console.
This distinction matters especially after delisting. A full-console backup may protect a wider set of console data, while cloud saved-data storage is the relevant path for an individual PS5 progress record. Neither statement means that an arbitrary PS5 save file can be browsed, edited or copied like a PC folder.

Can I move a Nintendo Switch save to an SD card?
No. Nintendo states that game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. A microSD card may be relevant to some software-storage tasks, but it is not a save-backup destination.
Use Nintendo’s save-data cloud backup feature only when the specific game, account and subscription conditions allow it. Check the game’s support status rather than assuming all Switch games can use cloud backup. Confirm that the backup is available before relying on it as your only copy.
Do not confuse downloaded game data with progress data. Moving or redownloading software on a microSD card does not create a portable copy of the save. If a title does not support the relevant cloud feature, Nintendo’s stated microSD restriction leaves no ordinary card-copy workflow to recommend.
How should I protect an Xbox save?
Use the game’s current Xbox save-sync and account-recovery guidance, and do not assume ordinary USB export is supported. The available official Xbox cloud-save information does not establish a sufficiently clear, current general procedure for independently exporting a game save to USB.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the title’s support information and your account’s save-sync status before changing consoles or accounts. If the game has been delisted, keep the existing installation and account context intact while you confirm what recovery and download options remain; a save copy alone cannot answer whether the game can still be installed or launched.
What should I check before restoring any backup?
Restoring can overwrite the progress currently on a console or PC. Preserve that current state first, then check that the backup is from the correct title and is the version you actually want.
- Compare dates. Make sure the backup is newer than any save you intend to keep, or deliberately choose the older progress if that is what you need.
- Keep the original backup untouched. Restore from a duplicate where possible so a failed or mistaken restore does not destroy your fallback.
- Check account and platform context. Cloud saves and console backups depend on platform-managed accounts or console data; do not assume a file from one account or platform will work elsewhere.
- Read overwrite prompts. If the platform warns that existing data will be replaced, stop and preserve the current copy before proceeding.
- Verify in the game. After restoring, load the title and confirm the expected progress is present before deleting or overwriting other copies.
- Test before an emergency. When possible, verify that the backup can be read while the original installation still works. A copy you have never checked is only an assumption about recoverability.
Does backing up a save preserve the game itself?
No. A save backup preserves progress data; it does not by itself preserve the game installation, patches, downloadable content, account entitlement or ability to authenticate and launch the title. The cited platform documentation describes save-data and backup mechanisms, not a universal guarantee that a delisted game can be re-downloaded or run.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Before deleting an installed copy, changing accounts or resetting a console, check the title-specific status for your platform and account. Keep the game installed if you still rely on it and have not confirmed that access can be restored. Treat save preservation and game-access preservation as separate risks.
Can a save backup move between PC and console?
Do not assume that it can. Platform documentation describes platform-specific storage and restore methods, not a general conversion process between PC, PlayStation, Switch and Xbox. Cross-platform saves depend on the individual game and its publisher-supported transfer features; unless the publisher documents one, treat the copy as a backup for its original platform.
A portable external SSD is a practical place to keep copied PC save folders and can be useful for supported PlayStation USB backup workflows. It is not a universal console-save solution: PS5 individual saves are not directly copied to USB, and Switch saves cannot be copied to microSD.
Which backup option should I choose?
Choose the least ambiguous method your platform supports, then add an independent copy where possible. For Steam, that means the local folder plus verified Steam Cloud. For PS4, use the saved-data copy to compatible USB storage and add PlayStation Plus cloud storage when available. For PS5, use supported cloud saved-data storage and distinguish it from a broader console backup. For Switch, check title eligibility for Nintendo’s save-data cloud feature rather than buying a microSD card for saves. For Xbox, follow the current account and game-specific synchronization guidance.
Hardware purchases are optional, not a guarantee. A portable external SSD is a sensible product for copied PC folders and supported PlayStation backups, but it should be presented with the platform limits beside it. No drive makes PS5 individual saves directly exportable, and no microSD card defeats Nintendo’s save-data restriction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFrequently overlooked failure points
- Only one copy exists. A file on the same failing disk or console is not an independent backup.
- The cloud is assumed to be current. Check synchronization rather than inferring it from the presence of a cloud feature.
- The wrong title or account is selected. Similar editions and account contexts can make a valid save appear missing.
- Configuration is ignored. Mods and settings may affect compatibility even when they are not part of the save folder.
- Restore overwrites newer progress. Preserve the current state before accepting a replacement prompt.
- Access is mistaken for preservation. A copied save does not include a license, installation, patch or downloadable content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I leave a delisted game installed after backing up its save?
If you still need to play it and have not confirmed that your platform account can reinstall or launch it, keeping the existing installation avoids making that separate access question more urgent. A save backup alone does not preserve the installed game or prove a future download will work.
Does Steam Cloud keep every game’s saves automatically?
No; whether a game supports Steam Cloud is title-specific. Check the game’s Steam Cloud status and synchronization state, then keep a local copy rather than treating cloud availability as universal.

Can I use one save backup on a different account?
The platform guidance does not establish a general account-to-account save transfer method. Cloud saves and console backups can depend on account and console context, so verify the specific title’s and platform’s rules before changing accounts.
Is a portable external SSD required for a PC save backup?
No. It is a practical independent destination, but any separate, verified storage location with enough free space can serve the same purpose. Keep the original folder and make a dated copy rather than moving the only copy.

Can I copy a PS5 save to a USB stick if it is small?
No. Sony’s guidance says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive. Use supported cloud saved-data storage, and treat broader PS5 console backup as a different operation.
Will a microSD card protect my Switch save?
No. Nintendo states that game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. Use the supported save-data cloud feature only when the specific game, account and subscription conditions permit it.
Does a USB save backup let me reinstall a delisted game?
Not necessarily. The backup preserves progress, while installation, entitlement, authentication, patches and downloadable content are separate access questions for the platform and title.
Can I restore a PC save on PlayStation or Switch?
Do not assume so. Cross-platform migration is game-specific and requires publisher-supported transfer features; an ordinary copied PC folder is normally a backup for its original platform.
The Bottom Line
Back up the progress before the next hardware failure or account change: copy Steam’s local folder, use PS4’s supported USB workflow, protect PS5 saves through supported cloud or console backup options, and never treat a Switch microSD card as save storage. Keep an independent, dated copy where possible, and separately verify that the delisted game can still be installed and launched.
