Usually, yes—but not on the first launch and not for every game. Denuvo Anti-Tamper is designed to validate a game online during installation or its first launch, then allow later launches without a connection. To make that work, activate the exact title while online, finish all launcher and game updates, start it successfully once, switch the launcher to offline mode, and test it before disconnecting. A patch, major hardware change, damaged local activation data, or a publisher launcher can require you to reconnect. Multiplayer, cloud synchronization, updates, and other network services remain unavailable offline.
Do Denuvo-protected games require internet every time?
No. Irdeto’s Denuvo Anti-Tamper guide explicitly says, “Our technology does not require a permanent online connection,” and explains that “Any subsequent game launches do not require an online connection.” The connection is normally needed for an initial license and anti-tamper validation, not for every single-player launch afterward.

The storefront, publisher launcher, edition, installation process, and network-dependent features can add their own checks. The accurate rule is therefore: Denuvo usually permits offline play after activation, but a particular title may still demand a connection.
What has to happen before the first offline launch?
Prepare the game while the computer is connected. The first launch is the point at which the platform can validate your license and Denuvo can create the local activation information used later.

- Install the game through its authorized store or launcher. A product protected by Denuvo may require an internet connection during installation or first launch to activate both the product and Denuvo Anti-Tamper.
- Apply every available update. Complete downloads for the launcher and the game before going offline. A later patch can trigger another validation requirement.
- Launch the exact title once. Wait until it reaches its normal menu or playable state, rather than assuming that a completed download means activation succeeded.
- Exit normally. Let the launcher close or return to its library so it can save its offline credentials and status.
- Enable the launcher’s offline mode and test it. Disconnect only after the same computer can start that title with networking disabled.
Denuvo’s local token is not a transferable proof that works everywhere. TapTap’s developer documentation describes it as an encrypted game token stored on the device after first activation. If that token expires, becomes corrupted, or is missing, the platform must perform a new license activation.
How do I prepare a Steam game for offline play?
Steam’s offline mode must be prepared while you are online. The following sequence follows Steam and SEGA’s published guidance and avoids the most common failure before a trip or outage.
- Open Steam while connected. Sign in and keep your account credentials saved. If Steam has to authenticate again after you disconnect, unsaved credentials can leave you unable to start the client.
- Finish all downloads. Check both the Steam client and the game for pending updates. Do not leave a queued patch or installation task waiting in the Downloads view.
- Start the game once online. Confirm that the title reaches its normal playable screen and that any publisher launcher it invokes also completes its sign-in or activation step.
- Close the game normally. A clean exit gives Steam a chance to retain the information it needs for offline mode.
- Select Steam > Go Offline. Follow the prompt to restart Steam in offline mode while the connection is still available.
- Disconnect and test. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network, restart Steam, and launch the same game. If it fails, reconnect and fix the issue before relying on it away from home.
SEGA’s support instructions state: “You must connect to the Steam Network and test each of the games you would like to use in Offline Mode at least once.”
Do not force-close Steam during this setup. SEGA warns that an improper shutdown can cause stored offline information to be lost; if that information disappears, Steam may not start without an internet connection. An outdated Steam client can also display the message “This game cannot be started in Offline Mode.”
Why can a Denuvo game ask for internet again?
A later connection request does not necessarily mean Denuvo has become permanently online-only. It usually indicates that one of the local, software, or platform conditions for offline validation has changed.

A game patch was installed
Irdeto identifies installing a game patch as a circumstance that can require reconnection. A patch can change the protected files or the activation state, so complete the update and launch the title online before trying offline mode again.
The hardware configuration changed substantially
Irdeto also lists a significant hardware-configuration change as a possible reason for revalidation. A major PC upgrade can therefore invalidate an offline setup even when the game and account are unchanged. Reconnect, let the platform validate the license, and repeat the offline test.
The local token is expired, damaged, or missing
TapTap’s technical documentation says later launches rely on an encrypted token stored locally. If that token expires, is corrupted, or cannot be found, the platform needs a fresh activation. Offline mode cannot recreate that authorization without a connection.
Steam’s offline data was lost
Steam keeps information specifically for offline operation. A forced shutdown or other loss of that stored data can prevent Steam from starting without internet, even if the game itself has no new update.
The client is out of date
SEGA notes that an outdated Steam client can produce an offline-launch error. Reconnect, allow Steam to update, and then perform the normal Go Offline sequence again.

How do store and launcher requirements change the answer?
Denuvo is only one layer in the launch chain. The same protection can behave differently depending on where you bought the game and which launcher starts it.
| Layer | What it controls | What can force a connection |
|---|---|---|
| Denuvo Anti-Tamper | Initial license validation and local protected-game token | First activation, a patch, a major hardware change, or an invalid local token |
| Steam | Account sign-in, client offline mode, stored offline data, and game launch | Missing offline data, unsaved credentials, pending updates, or an outdated client |
| Publisher launcher | Publisher-specific activation and entitlement checks | Launcher data that cannot be loaded while offline or a title-specific activation rule |
| The game itself | Modes and services built into that edition | Multiplayer, cloud services, online entitlement checks, or other network-only functions |
SEGA’s current EULA warns that a Denuvo-protected product may limit installations and may install additional protection components. Rockstar’s support documentation describes an activation error that appears when required offline activation data cannot be loaded. Those examples show why a general Denuvo statement cannot guarantee offline startup for every edition.
What works without an internet connection?
Offline mode preserves only functions that have already been authorized and do not need a live service. The exact scope is set by the game and launcher.
| Function | Offline status | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Previously activated single-player campaign | Usually available | Works when the local token, launcher data, and game files remain valid. |
| Multiplayer and matchmaking | Unavailable | These modes require a connection to other players or the game service. |
| Cloud-save synchronization | Unavailable | Local progress may remain on the computer, but synchronization waits until you reconnect. |
| Downloading patches or new content | Unavailable | Go online before applying updates or installing additional products. |
| New-product activation | Unavailable | A title that has never completed its first validation cannot be activated offline. |
| Online entitlement checks | Unavailable | Any feature that verifies ownership with a server needs connectivity. |
SEGA’s offline instructions specifically direct players to reconnect for updates, activation of new products, and multiplayer modes. Treat offline mode as a way to run already prepared local content, not as a replacement for online services.

- Read the exact error. Note whether it comes from Steam, a publisher launcher, or the game. A launcher message about missing activation data points to a different remedy than a game that is waiting for an update.
- Allow all client and game updates to finish. Check for a paused download or a restart request. Do not disconnect again until the queues are clear.
- Launch the title online. Reach the normal menu so Denuvo and the platform can refresh the license and local token.
- Close everything normally. Avoid killing Steam or the publisher launcher from the operating system while it is writing offline data.
- Re-enter offline mode from the launcher’s menu. In Steam, use Steam > Go Offline rather than simply unplugging the network while Steam is still online.
- Test with networking disabled. If the title now starts, the problem was stale or missing preparation data. If it still fails, the game or launcher may impose an additional title-specific requirement.
- Plan for a connection after a major change. A patch or significant hardware change can legitimately require a new validation, so complete that step before your next offline session.
What should I check before traveling or expecting an outage?
Use this short pre-disconnection checklist for every Denuvo title you expect to play.
- The game is fully installed and no download is pending.
- The launcher itself is up to date.
- Your account credentials are saved where the launcher requires them.
- You have started the exact game successfully while online.
- You exited the game and launcher normally.
- The launcher is explicitly set to offline mode.
- You disconnected once and verified that the game reaches its playable screen.
- You understand which modes will be unavailable, especially multiplayer, cloud synchronization, and updates.
Repeat the test after a substantial system upgrade or any game patch. A title that worked offline yesterday can need online revalidation after either event.
Can Denuvo games run offline on Proton or a handheld PC?
Irdeto states that Denuvo Anti-Tamper is compatible with Valve Proton, so Proton compatibility does not by itself rule out offline play. It also does not guarantee that every game will launch offline on every handheld or Linux configuration. The exact title still has to complete its platform activation, launcher preparation, and offline test on that device.
For a handheld, perform the same sequence as on a desktop: update while connected, launch once, switch the store client to offline mode, disconnect, and test the game. If the device changes its hardware profile or loses the launcher’s stored data, reconnecting may be necessary.
How can I judge a specific Denuvo-protected title?
Check these six points on the game’s store and support information before buying or traveling:

- First-launch requirement: Does installation or initial activation explicitly require internet?
- Launcher dependency: Does the title start only through Steam, a publisher launcher, or both?
- Offline preparation: Must you launch it once and enable a client-specific offline mode?
- Activation data: Can the local token expire, be corrupted, or be invalidated by a system change?
- Patch and hardware sensitivity: Could an update or major configuration change trigger revalidation?
- Offline feature scope: Which campaign, saves, and modes remain usable without servers?
If the answers are unclear, assume you need a connection for installation and first launch, and do not depend on offline access until you have completed a real disconnected test. That cautious approach accounts for Denuvo’s normal behavior while allowing for stricter publisher or game-specific rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a fixed number of days before Denuvo requires another online check?
No universal activation interval is established in the available Denuvo guidance. The local token can expire, but its lifetime is title- and platform-dependent, so do not plan around an assumed number of days.
Recommended Free Tools
What happens if I reinstall Windows before an offline trip?
A reinstall that removes the locally stored activation or launcher data can leave the game in the same state as a missing token. Reconnect, activate the title again, and redo the launcher’s offline test before disconnecting.
Can I update a Denuvo game while Steam is offline?
No. Patches and new content require a connection, and installing a patch can itself trigger another Denuvo validation. Go online, finish the update, launch the game once, and prepare offline mode again.
Will a publisher launcher let a Steam game start without Steam online?
Not necessarily. A publisher launcher may perform its own entitlement or activation check, and its offline data can be required even when Steam’s offline mode is correctly configured. Verify the complete launch chain with the network disabled.
