Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo complete the Derealize Exotic mission in Destiny 2, you charge Taken Relics by defeating Taken enemies and use them on marked Blights to break Vrhiisk’s shields. You then solve the No Escape symbol puzzle, collect the Corrupted Fragment, destroy the Hive crystals that open the traversal route, and finish Xir-Kuur’s phases before sealing the chamber on the ritual plate. Barrow-Dyad, the mission’s Strand submachine gun, is the reward for that final chamber.
The mission is multi-stage, and it punishes mistakes at each stage: a relic that is not fully charged, a puzzle step taken in the wrong direction, or a missed dimension cue can each cost you time. The steps below come from published walkthroughs by Destructoid and Patch Crazy, with background from Bungie’s own announcements and patch notes. They are not based on personal testing, so if your in-game prompts differ from the descriptions, follow what the game shows you.
Where to find the mission
Derealize is an Exotic mission tied to Episode: Heresy. Bungie announced it on February 13, 2025, in its “This Week In Destiny” post, and it lists Barrow-Dyad as the reward.
Bungie’s Update 9.7.0 page, which was current when this guide was prepared, says Ops are accessed at the bottom of the Director. If you are looking for the activity, open the Director and scroll to the bottom to find Ops rather than searching the older Portal layout that earlier guides describe.

Do not assume a single fixed unlock path. Earlier guides describe quest prerequisites, and the mission flow has changed as Destiny 2’s activity structure has evolved. If the mission does not appear for you, check the current Ops listing in the Director rather than a prerequisite list from an older article.
Opening: the Mausoleum and Dread groups
The mission opens in the Mausoleum. According to the Destructoid walkthrough by Jonathan LoChiatto, updated February 12, 2025, you fight successive groups of Dread enemies. Taken eyes in this section apply Suffocating Terror, so clear them quickly rather than letting them accumulate. Once you defeat the Tormentors and an opening Subjugator, advance through the portal to the Vrhiisk encounter.
Vrhiisk, Seeker of Power
Vrhiisk begins at the Trenchway and raises a shield. Each cycle of the fight follows the same pattern, which the walkthroughs describe as follows.
- Defeat the Blight Sentinels to clear the area.
- Defeat the Taken Conduit Ogres to obtain a Taken Relic.
- Charge the relic by defeating Taken enemies. Keep going until the game indicates the relic is charged.
- Carry the charged relic to a marked Blight and destroy it.
- Repeat for each remaining marked Blight.
- Once the relevant Blights are removed, damage Vrhiisk until the shield returns, then repeat the cycle for the next side of the arena.
After the arena phases, Vrhiisk moves the fireteam into a close-range follow-up arena, where the same relic-and-Blight logic continues. Keep the relic charged before you move on, because each Blight needs a fresh charge.

One interaction to avoid: if you are holding a Taken Orb, do not activate Transcendence during the fight. Bungie’s Update 9.7.0 says activating Transcendence while holding a Taken Orb drops the orb and clears all related buffs.
No Escape: the symbol and arrow puzzle
After Vrhiisk, the mission moves to a Hive rune plate with a direction arrow. The puzzle is a sequence check. One walkthrough gives the directional order as right, up, down, left. Sequence details come from third-party guides, so if the symbols or order on your screen differ, follow the rule below rather than the listed order.
Rank #3
- Read the symbol that is currently active on the plate.
- If it is the next symbol in the required sequence, step off the plate in the direction the arrow indicates.
- If it is not the next symbol, do not enter a direction. Stay still and wait for the room transition, which moves you to the next room.
- Repeat until the sequence is complete and the path opens.
A wrong step does not reset the puzzle in any way the walkthroughs describe, but it moves you out of position. Waiting for the transition is the safer choice when you are unsure.
Corrupted Fragment, crystals, and traversal
Once the puzzle is solved, cross the platform section and claim the Corrupted Fragment. The route continues through Dreadnaught-style traversal with jumps, hazards, and Hive tunnels.

At the shielded section, you must destroy three Hive crystals to clear the barrier. According to the Destructoid walkthrough, one crystal sits in a chasm, and two are beyond the passage that runs around the barrier. Look for the crystals by their position relative to the chasm and the passage rather than by a fixed map coordinate, since the walkthrough describes landmarks rather than exact positions. Once the barrier is down, continue along the traversal route toward the artifact room.
Xir-Kuur: the final encounter
Barrow-Dyad sits on a table in the encounter room. Picking it up triggers the final encounter state. Destroy the Blights in the arena first, then fight Xir-Kuur.
Xir-Kuur appears in a Taken form and a Not-Taken form. The attack form changes with the dimension cue on screen. The Destructoid walkthrough associates Suffocating Terror with attacking the Not-Taken form, and it associates the Torn Between Dimensions black-and-white visuals with attacking the Taken form. Confirm the cue in your own game before committing damage.
- Attack the form that the current dimension cue indicates.
- As each phase progresses, destroy the new Blights that appear.
- Repeat the cue-and-attack cycle until the phases are complete.
- When the mission tells the fireteam to escape, move to the ritual plate and hold it until the chamber seals.
A second walkthrough, the Patch Crazy guide by Harry Smith dated February 22, 2026, describes the same final sequence: leave for the plate and hold position until the room seals.

Bungie’s announcement describes the weapon’s core loop in a sentence from the Destiny 2 Community Team, dated February 13, 2025: “This new Exotic Strand Submachine Gun creates large amounts of blight when hitting more than three different targets.”
Bungie also said the weapon’s stored blight depletes while you are not firing, as the magazine refills, and that reloading converts stored blight into seekers. Hitting more than three targets at once is therefore the efficient way to build blight, and reloading is how you spend it.
Rewards and repeat runs
Bungie’s February 2025 announcement said four intrinsic bonuses could be unlocked at launch and that catalysts would arrive in later updates. Update 9.5.0, dated December 2, 2025, changed the reward structure: it states that Portal versions of Exotic missions were updated to drop associated Exotics, Catalysts, and Intrinsics.
Walkthroughs describe taking Barrow-Dyad from the artifact room on your first completion. Because reward behavior has changed across updates, do not assume a specific catalyst count or reward order. Check the in-game reward preview before you start.
Difficulty and preparation
Update 9.5.0 also increased starting revive tokens on some difficulties. Bungie’s notes do not list every difficulty, so check the revive count on the difficulty you select. No official source establishes a required loadout, so judge your setup against these four factors:
Quick Recap
- Survivability and revive tolerance: the Dread phase and the Trenchway arena punish sustained damage, so keep at least one revive available for the relic runs.
- Clearing speed: groups of Taken need to be cleared quickly so you can charge the relic and reach Blights before the shield returns.
- Platforming confidence: the traversal and crystal route involve jumps and hazards that are unforgiving for players who are still learning movement.
- Role division: a fireteam can split the work, with one player handling relic charging and carrying while others clear enemies and break Blights.
