In an April 2025 interview, the then-Microsoft Gaming CEO said that people who play only one or two games a year might be better off buying those games outright. He described that as a personal example, not a proven cutoff—and said he wanted players to have the choice.
What Phil Spencer said about Game Pass
In an interview with Variety, published in April 2025, Spencer called Game Pass “a healthy option for certain people” and said, “It’s not for everybody.” The contemporaneous accounts by Windows Central and GameSpot reproduce his comments.
“If you play one or two games a year, Game Pass probably isn’t the right business model for you, you should just buy those two games, and that would make total sense. But I want you to have the choice.”
Spencer also said there was no need for Game Pass to be “the only way for people to play,” adding that it would be good for Xbox if subscribers instead chose to buy their games. His description of the service was “just another option for somebody who wants to play.”

Who might find Game Pass worthwhile?
Spencer’s example points to a practical decision: compare what you expect to play with the current subscription cost and the cost of buying those games. That is a useful way to think about the choice, not a break-even calculation from Spencer or a universal rule.
- A subscription may suit you if the current catalog includes several games you genuinely want to play during the period you subscribe, or if you value trying games without buying each one.
- Buying may suit you better if you expect to play only a small number of titles, already know which ones you want, and their purchase cost is preferable to subscribing for the time you would need.
- Check the details before comparing: subscription prices, tiers, included games, and access terms can change. Compare the plan available in your region with the specific games and editions you want; do not assume a title is included just because it is associated with Xbox.
The “one or two games” example is illustrative. Spencer did not identify a mathematical threshold, and the interview reports provide no quantified break-even point.

Buying games remains part of Xbox’s model
Spencer said Game Pass titles were also available to buy, and that Xbox was making them available to buy in more places. That was a statement in the 2025 interview, not a guarantee of current availability at every retailer, in every region, or for every edition. Check the platform, edition, and local stock for the game you want.
The broader message was that Xbox could serve players through different ways of playing and paying. Spencer’s 2025 remarks also characterized PC and cloud as Xbox’s biggest growth areas at the time, while describing console as an established business. Those were his descriptions of the business in 2025, not current growth measurements.

What changed after the interview
Xbox’s later strategy message makes the pricing context especially relevant. In an April 23, 2026 employee message, Xbox Wire said, “Pricing is getting harder for people to keep up with,” and listed clearer Game Pass differentiation and sustainable economics among its priorities. That is an official statement of direction, not a full plan comparison or a promise about future prices.
PC Gamer reported on April 23, 2026 that Asha Sharma had taken over from Spencer in February 2026 and that Xbox had lowered Game Pass prices while removing day-one inclusion for future Call of Duty games. Because pricing and included content are volatile, check Xbox’s current plan information for your market before deciding. Spain-specific euro prices reported by MeriStation should not be treated as prices for other regions or as necessarily current.
